This is my life I saw this movie when I was 3-6 yrs(2004) old I watched it so many times and I still love and remember this movie I will never forget this movie
I've had that image of the blood running down the Black's leg in my head for years, now I know where its from! Great movie, proves you don't need dialogue to tell a great story.
i know its just a movie but i'm real jealous X3 I'm working on going to a jockey acdemy myself soon but he's under the legal age to be ridding in one & owns and races his OWN horse! X3
I love this movie soo much! I used to have it on VHS, but then it got ruined in a flood we once had in our house :'(. Now I have to wait to buy it on DVD. I so wish I had a horse like that. Same breed, same coat color, same speed and stamina, but different gender. Mare/Filly. As in, it'll be a full grown Mare, but it'll still be like a Filly. I love the books, and I love this movie. Thank you, Walter Farley :)
@DarcyLovesPokey It was a match race between Sunraider and Cyclone the two best racers in the country, The Black Stallion could not be entered in any graded stakes races because he had no pedigree but for the matchrace that particular rule was not followed for whatever reason and he was permitted to participate and Alec just knew that horse was good enough and low and behold he won the race :D
is there ANY way you could get the audio of the horses running... like their breathing and hooves??? i tried recording it on my phone for a ringtone (there isnt a more beautiful sound) but the audio sucks :'( lemmi know {2:30-2:50} I would pay for it ugh sooooo beautiful i could listen to it alll day
I wore out my tape I watched this soo many times... I currently own an arab and a thoroughbred I adore them..... Soo how long before a Zenyatta movie?
The most beautiful film about a book (and sequels) that carried me through my childhood, I love horses and I always will. All is amazingly beautiful but also could be true in real life, if you know what to look for :)x
@doubleplay1919 When a horse is treated and trained well he/she will love human company and be quite willing to carry a rider wherever asked. It is like any relationship - it takes time and patience. Horses are prey animals, and therefore ready to run away in new or unusal surroundings, but when you gain their trust they will do anything for you. The question then is - are you worthy of that trust?
@doubleplay1919 I've never heard that they like wind, but they love to run. Cowboys must 'drive' or 'push' cattle, but when you start to move a herd of horses (domestic as well as wild) they take off at a run. Riders must be in front of the herd and hold it back to control their speed. At a run their legs function as a bellows with their lungs, so they don't have to make any extra effort to breathe, but they also cannot take an extra gulp of air.
I always cry when I watch the race! So awesome! I know it's just a movie but Secretariat actually did a similar run from behind. Makes it all the more plausible. Love this!!
@sushi7828 YES!!! I saw Secretariat's Triple Crown win on television when it happened! I was jumping up and down and screaming and crying. 31 length win!!! AWESOMENESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Saw Seabiscuit original movie and remake. The actual run was before my time. LOVED it!!
i like the ending when they're rollig around in the sand. notice how the kid gets a little close & the horse half gets up & hops sideways away a bit so he wont kick the kid? strange how animals have this understanding for young ones but hardly EVER show it in the same way to adults. it just...isnt the same lol
'The Black Stallion' is a rare jewel. Everything about the movie is perfection- the casting, the story, the acting, the direction, the music, everything. All involved in the creation of this masterpiece deserve the highest praise and the deepest gratitude, from anyone who appreciates the very best in film.
I watched the newest "horse" movies Seasbiscuit and Secretariat and neither compares to the race scene in The Black Stallion which was made in 1979. I love the music (so hauntingly beautiful and matching the scene perfectly) and the SOUND of the horse galloping.
Ok seriously! "SOUND DESIGN". This movie was cutting edge back in (gasp) 1979. Watch any movie in that time frame and tell me you don't see "mistakes". Like the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Did anyone else catch Gandolfs wild stallion had a breast collar mark, shoes and a string aroung his neck to guide him. It happens. But that why movies are for us to enjoy. We want to believe it possiable so we do. I know what Black did not possiable but I believed. Still love this movie and always will. Best!!
@nickys9 In one of the first scenes in the Fellowship of the Rings you can actually see a car driving by. If that's not a mistake I don't know what is.
I knew from the book that the Black wins the race - and yet I still sat on the edge of my seat, with my heart in my mouth every second... Could hardly see for tears at the end. And I'm not usually a soppy sentimentalist! Ye gods, what I wouldn't give to ride a horse like that along the water's edge... !
this movie is sooo good!! i always loved the Black!! they actually made a second movie with the same kid. based on the second book The Black Stallion Returns. it was good but not mear as good as the first!!! :D
the secret to any truely great scene in a movie is... "SOUND DESIGN" all the fantastic shots and camera angles in the world wont break threw and touch your soul the way the sound of this horse pushing air into its lunges at each stride like a fucking freight train does.
This movie really makes me cry. And it shows something that is almost completely forgotten: the real, true love between an animal and a human. The bad thing is, that most animals don't live so long like their owners...and it's very hard to loose them... Y-Y
instead of judging what horse/what jockey, why not just enjoy the of love between a horse and his boy, im a 26 year old guy, jumped ponies jc and ja,then jumped bsja for a while.gave up.as we all usually do..thought i knew horses till i bought Aria (i named her)an ex trotter mare who won alot in career as a trot racer but wouldnt take to the stallion so was goin to be knacked.. i bought her on the better judgement of my dad who is a fine horseman..and what a horse..she is the best horse ive owned
@TheCrippledCrow Chestnut is a color, not a breed. It is a common color and is found in many breeds including the Arabian. It is a horse with a reddish-brown coat with a mane and tail that are the same color or lighter (flaxen) than the body color. It can range from a very dard liver chestnut to a palomino. Secretariat was a chestnut.
I have watched this scene maybe 15+ times over 3 decades (saw it at the cinema)...and I still get so worked up when that background audio starts to build and the Black starts to get his stride...I actually have trouble talking during that scene.
HOLY CRAP when they have it like RIGHT next to the ground at 03:27 it looks like he is going like 100mph!!!!! (not really but it looks that way!!!!!!!)
they really should make more horse movies like this. Im 14 and this has always been my favorite movie in the solar system. Now, there making all these dog and cat movies but what about the horses!!!
That horse was an arab. Arabs have never and will never be able to race against thoroughbreds in a race, unless it's 50 miles across the desert. If you look at times, thoroughbred racehorses on average would finish about 40 lengths ahead of even the fastest arab racehorse. This is a nice family movie, but it's not very realistic.
Which is why Seabiscuit defeated War Admiral? Statistically because of his size and body he should of never of been able to beat a Thoroughbred of his caliber, even despite him being a thoroughbred. Take into consideration its not all about the breed and blood. My friend has a thoroughbred, and I have an Arabian. We have a race track at the stables I keep her at, and my mare left her gelding in the dust.
@Laodeciea Seabiscuit was actually very similar in stature to War Admiral. I know the movie depicted War Admiral as being 18 hands, but that's hollywood. I'm not comparing random horses. If you were to put an arab in top condition against a thoroughbred in top condition in a race anywhere between 6 furlongs and 2 miles, the thoroughbred wins by at least ten lengths, and that's being generous. The only type of race an arab has an advantage in would be a 50 mile race across the desert.
Cass Ole, who was featured in most of the movie's scenes, with Fae Jur, another black Arabian stallion, being his main double. Fae Jur's main scene is the one where Alec is trying to gain the trust of the Black on the beach. Two other stunt doubles were used for running, fighting and swimming scenes.
@horseangels i don't think cass ole was used in the race...i think they used a thoroughbred, because one big clue that it isn't an arab is that his tail isn't up...more than most arabian hold their tails up when they run...but unfortunely idk what horse they did use in the actual race
What words can be said. No words CAN be said about this MASTERPIECE that would begin to do it justice. Sometimes words just aren't enough. What I can say is:Damn Hollywood. This story is just so beautiful it's meant to stand alone, not cheapened to make greedy hearts richer. There shouldn't have been any sequels (prequels). That's why the expanded saga failed. Because this movie is about HEART!! And it can't have heart, when all you have is greed.
@corbinmichael123 Maybe that's why there was never a sequel to E.T. I have this movie. Loved the book as a kid. Love the movie as an adult. Always wished I was Alec on the beach....
2:08 can you please tell me the name of the horse they used in that scene? It most certainly isn't Cas Olè, but a stunt double thoroughbred race horse. Who exactly plays the "mystery horse" in that scene? (I meant the name of the horse), Because I think it's a very very beautiful and strong looking stallion. Thanks much for the info!
O filme é sem duvida um dos mais belos ja feito com cavalos. Obrigado por colocar a disposição para que possamos apreciar em todos os detalhes.......VALEU!!!!!
Every time I watch clips or the whole Black Stallion movies, that part in this clip always makes me cry... so epic. When an animal gives you all of its heart....no words can describe it.
At 3:28 is one of my all time favorite shots in the film. Seeing that animal run its ass off in that shot always gives me the chills! Love this movie.
I have never very understand what they say because all the time I have see this movie he was in English and my first langue is French, but it's my favorite horse movie with Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron
I agree, This film will always be special to me. Ever since watching it at 8 years old, I still get chills from the music on the flashbacks and end credits!
This was a FILM...not like any of the shite coming out today like G.I.Joe or Snakes on a plane LOL. Maybe the film producers are catering for the Dumb-down in society now?
hollywood seems less and less likely to make movies like this. This is just a great movie. The cinematography on and way in which the story is told visually is just fantastic. I believe there is barely 5 lines of dialog in the first 10 15 minutes of the movie. A movie my kids love and I as do the grown ups.
Next to seabiscut this is my favorite horse movie. It is a wonderful movie and one I can watch over and over. It is hard to believe it was 30 years ago this movie came out too.

I learned to read because of The Black.
The heart, the soul, you cannot see it, it cannot be measured. Yet it is everything. The Black taught me to be what I could see in myself.
Walter Farley... thank you.

@horseangels i don't think cass ole was used in the race...i think they used a thoroughbred, because one big clue that it isn't an arab is that his tail isn't up...more than most arabian hold their tails up when they run...but unfortunely idk what horse they did use in the actual race
bballgirlmu1 1 year ago
the used Morgans, arabians, and Thoroughbreds to play the black( morgan more in the beginning

@corbinmichael123 i personally liked the black stallion 2. But all the others were just..meh.
Rush888 1 year ago
@corbinmichael123 Maybe that's why there was never a sequel to E.T. I have this movie. Loved the book as a kid. Love the movie as an adult. Always wished I was Alec on the beach....

2:08 can you please tell me the name of the horse they used in that scene? It most certainly isn't Cas Olè, but a stunt double thoroughbred race horse. Who exactly plays the "mystery horse" in that scene? (I meant the name of the horse), Because I think it's a very very beautiful and strong looking stallion. Thanks much for the info!
shairaptor 2 years ago
if u watch the end credits, it gives you the names of CassOle's horse stunt doubles.
battousaiblade 2 years ago

I agree, This film will always be special to me. Ever since watching it at 8 years old, I still get chills from the music on the flashbacks and end credits!
This was a FILM...not like any of the shite coming out today like G.I.Joe or Snakes on a plane LOL. Maybe the film producers are catering for the Dumb-down in society now?

rockerfreak13xx: Black was Arabian.
stac03 2 years ago
Every race horse traces it's roots back to one of three arabian stallions. Thoroughbreds ARE Arabians.
Sherroy1960 2 years ago
I swear that horse looked more arab than thouroughbred at most of the movie

hollywood seems less and less likely to make movies like this. This is just a great movie. The cinematography on and way in which the story is told visually is just fantastic. I believe there is barely 5 lines of dialog in the first 10 15 minutes of the movie. A movie my kids love and I as do the grown ups.
