In order for the NHL to truly expand into the american market, you need their big market cities to have successful teams. Look at what chicago has done. NY and LA hasnt had great teams since the early 90s and when it happened, there was alot of american interest in hockey.

It can also be translated to other american sports. There's always a big market succesful sports franchise in any sport.

It would be great to get a star player in LA, but not so much if he doesn't sign an extension.
