@packapunchwhips Rule of thumb I measure the diameter of the knot at its thickest and divide that by the number of bites in the knot. If anyone has a better formula I would like to hear it. For length I measure one turn around the knot and multiply by 9
man i love your accent. lol. nice vid. im wondering can you do this but instead of using like a 1 inch ball thingy that your using it on could i do it with a piece of wood say.. 1 foot long?
@MrSkyeman1 Go to my site em-brand-whips and look up the bullwhip tutorial page and it will explain it all for you. The biggest problem you will have with wood is finding a wood that is strong enough and will not break.
I just picked up the craft, and was 110% perplexed on the issue of the heel knot. I tried every tutorial out there -even Tony Layzell's, from essentiawhips- and found them completely incomprehensible.
I have now finished my first heel knot, having tied it on my first whip. I couldn't tie one on my second, because I used a steel ring to anchor the strands.
I fashioned a wrist strap by hitching one end of the line to the other.
Hi there mate , i,ve been looking at your very nice work and i am wondering if you have any videos for sale on whip making ? if so how can i get in touch with you.
hi i made an exellant bull whip but i used a piece of wood about 8 inches long and about 6mm wide for the handle. It seemed strong but when i was using it once and the handle just snapped. I made it out of vynl leather stuff so it wasn't as strong as leather, so i cant just bind some metal on the outside of the handle with some of the vinl stuff because the vynl will break. So if there is any way of fixing it please can you tell me. Thanks, Ramiejose.
The only thing I can offer is to undo the plaiting from the handle end and replace the handle if you can with a piece of steel the same diameter. You can get long nails that will do the job nicely, have a look around wallmart or ask someone in the hardware section.
right, i have a question. now i need to make a handle for an apache war club. its basically like a snake whip. my question is, are you tacking it into a wooden handle? and if so, how would you change what you do if you did not have a wooden base, but instead you just have leather underneath? I'd appreciate the help. also, I'm working with a thick buffalo leather, any suggestions on making the lace for the knot in this video? again, i appreciate the help.
Not a great deal about bull whips I'm afaraid. They seem to be an American style of whip where stock whips are Australian having originated from the English hunting whip. Whips have been around in one form or another since before the Romans used for punishment and working stock. Nowadays they are still used for working stock, not to hit the animal more to control it with noise and for sports whips cracking in the form of competitions developing new cracking routines using two whips at once .
is there a certain equation that you use to figure out the length and width of a strand for a turkshead knot?

@bernie46 so when you say "diameter of the knot at its thickest", do you mean the actual knot or the foundation?
packapunchwhips 1 year ago
@packapunchwhips The foundation.
bernie46 1 year ago
@bernie46 just one more question. what units do you use to measure the knot's strand?
packapunchwhips 1 year ago
@packapunchwhips millimeters for strand width but I still measure the length by feet and inches

Bernie, any chance you can go back and rename these videos so that we can know the order to watch them, by just looking at the title?
