Very true. I wasn't really insulting deer, but they do tend to stand or cross in front of moving vehicles so in that regard, they're pretty dumb. It's all relative. I've known people dumber than deer. It's just funny how they stay on the tracks trying to run ahead of the accelerating train until they finally get it and get the heck out of the way. They probably would have dove under the right-side train if it had been moving. Kinda dumb. heheh But deer are not meant to be human dumb!

@Sneighke no actually its because hunting season for deer is only 1 to 2 weeks long the population of deer is out of control and you throw cars in the mix doing speeds of 35 to 65 mph well you'll hit a deer eventually. they are quiet smart thats what make them hard to hunt esp the bucks

We get that here in Oz with Kangaroos...the damn things will hop along the track and then go straight in front of your locomotive. There are other vids on here of cows being hit, and ill-informed people saying "why didn't you sound the horn" or "why didn't you hit the brakes". We're told not to hit the brakes, as if you slow down they could go underneath you and make a hell of a mess of the traction motors, and sometimes sounding the horn just makes them jump in front of you.

I have a question for you, assuming you are a routine conductor. Is there an ordinance that you guys are required to follow in regards to not using the horn when traveling through a residential area? I live in a neighborhood that sits well within a half mile of train tracks, and many times day and night I can hear the blaring horn, which can be very disrupting especially if the windows are open. Is that allowed or are they just being blatantly disrespectful? Thanks.

@TequilaAssassin4eva I too live close to the tracks. iv talked with drivers and conductors that work with norfolk southern and from what they have said they have to blow the horn at least 3 times for every crossing day or night.

@trainmasta227 Blowing the horn will actually make them run on the tracks and even towards the train. Most engineers will tell you the worst thing you can do is sound off the horn. If an engineer sounds the horn it should be in simple toots. At the speed this train was traveling, there was no danger of the train hitting the deer, the train could stop in time to avoid hitting them.
