As with most "mic'ed under the mask" baddies I've always wanted to hear them with much more low end added in(kinda like that rumble you get from baddies at the movie theater). Esp Sutek, Omega, Davros among others... Everytime hear a DW baddie speak I think of that Monty Python sketch with "Tinny and Woody" words...
Damn, Elisabeth Sladen is so adorable in these scenes, she practically steals the camera from Tom Baker! One thing is for certain, together Lis and Tom absolutely OWN the screen; the way they bounce off each other is as fun to watch as the story itself!
Cyberrob, the original "Pyramids.." SFX is actually good and holds up very well even today. The one addition you made that is VERY effective is the ripple effect of touching the force field barrier.
Sutekh is the one villain who sounds legitimately PISSED OFF when the doctor starts interfering with his plans moreso than any other doctor who villain i've seen in either the old series or the new one.
Agree that Leela was a more difficult part to act, and that Louise Jameson did a superb job. Sarah Jane would be easier as Lis Sladen only had to portray a modified version of herself.
But Lis Sladen's ability in having the audience naturally connect with her and sense her onscreen emotions is a very rare acting talent. "Sarah" just seems so comfortably familiar, dependable and capable from the first time you see her. Lis Sladen is why Sarah Jane endures with such timeless popularity.
Elisabeth Sladen's talent permitted "Sarah" to develop into a proactive, intelligent, resourceful companion, arguably the most independent and capable companion DW has ever had. This was especially evident in the Pertwee years, those Season 11 serials having more complex, adult plots because her character allowed it.
The strong Sladen/Baker connection onscreen, and "Hinchcliffe Horror on Alien Worlds" era, changed Sarah's capable independence into Dynamic-Duo-with-the-Dr.
@glnelson1956 Ian Marter, who played Harry Sullivan was a very underrated companion, who accompanied the Baker Dr Who and Sarah/Liz in Season 12. Unfortunately, the script treated his character as a buffoon at times, but he was part of some of the most classic adventures.
@jtaellio11 Agree with you on Harry/Ian being underrated. I did not like Harry's poor treatment by the writers, and was particularly irritated with the "Harry Sullivan is an imbecile" line in "Revenge of the Cybermen".
Leela was another great companion, wonderfully written in Season 14. but poorly served by writers in Season 15. Louise Jameson kept "Leela" a great companion in spite of the unimaginative scripting of Season 15. The writers never allowed Leela to grow as she should have.
Cont: Harry/Sarah rate with Ian/Barbara as DW's most competent, independently adult companions in my opinion. It is a shame that Harry was around for only one season, as he, Sarah and the Dr made a great team, and all of them could bounce off of each other beautifully! Harry did get the dignified exit he deserved in "Terror of the Zygons" . i wish Ian had more screen time as Harry in "Android Invasion".
I'll bet it was Lis Sladen who insisted on the picture of Harry in the SJA attic!
@glnelson1956 Yes, Ian's character was originally devised to give physical help if the Doctor cast was too old to feasibly do set fight scenes. Louise, playing Leela gave a very accomplished performance, her work just seemed to flow. Admittedly, the stories of the 15th season were poorer, and the device of her 'falling in love' with Andred in Invasion of Time absolutely absurd. However, she is a very successful actress.
@glnelson1956 Yes, Leela, played by Louise Jameson was excellent. However, Tom Baker was reportedly absolutely obnoxious towards the actress, which came to a head in the making of 'Horror of Fang Rock' 1977. Somehow she rose above it, and still retains admiration for the fact that Tom helped disabled and sick children.
@jtaellio11 That is the precise same information I have concerning Baker's attitude toward Louise, and Paddy Russell, who directed POM verified that in several interviews.
Baker has dropped several notches in my estimation due to the verified reports on his attitude toward companions, particularly Louise.
Funny how Tom got along well with Lis and Lalla, but apparently had self-induced trouble with all other companions.
In reviewing ratings from all DW seasons up to the present New Series, one surprising fact leaped out at me: the most successful Dr in DW history was Jon Pertwee!
Pertwee had 5 strong seasons of progressively increasing ratings, and DW grew more adult in that era.
Tom Baker had 3 great seasons, 12,13,&14, and then his ratings began a slow spiral down, his last season's ratings (18) being as poor as DW's final 3 classic seasons.
Much of that downward spiral is Tom's fault directly!
@glnelson1956. Yes, in Pertwee's day there was relatively more money injected into the programme: they had their own stunt team, HAVOC, and lots of location filming. Mind of Evil, 1971 was purportedly the most expensive. By Baker's time, often they went completely onto OB video: Robot and Seeds of Doom. After Hinchcliffe's tenure, there was an absolute dictacte to remove the horror, hence the lighter toned stories from Horror of Fang Rock onwards. As Louise Jameson said, Tom was in it too long.
@glnelson. I think, in Lis' case, the two had enjoyed a very successful time period overall for the series. It was at a peak, and she was also a fellow Liverpudlian. As a team they were extremely successful: esp season 13 - Seeds of Doom (1976). I think Louise had said that from the'The Deadly Assassin' Tom has wanted the show for himself. Paddy Russell commented that by HFR Baker was difficult to work with, but this was often true of all the actors who had played the Doctor.
I consider DW(when at its best) firmly at the top of the Sci-Fi list. Our American Star Trek is #2. Both shows are emormously successful due to being primarily character-driven.
DW firmly moves into #1 because it's far more than Sci-Fi. It's also Adventure, Historical, Fantasy and more, moving anywhere in time, space or imagination.
Incredibly creative format in the hands fo capable producers and writers. (Letts/Dicks/Hinchcliffe/Holmes).
Concerning Sladen/Baker in DW, I think Lis may have been a positive influence on Tom in their time together. I'm basing that on DVD commentaries; It seems when Lis is with Tom, his commentaries are fairly decent. Without her presence, Tom gets off-the-wall at times, leading to a frustrating commentary for listeners.
@glnelson1956. Yes, Dr Who always presented a strong moralistic message, with the Dr battling forces of evil. The Christrian subtext is evident in stories like Colony in Space (1971) and therefore was superior to mindless distasteful horror often seen in 'video nasties'. Tom had a 'difficult' reputation, but not in Liz' time. He would throw scripts across the room and humiliate writers like Chris Boucher, who hated him!
You are correct. Gabriel Woolf, the voice actor for Sutekh for the Pyramids of Mars serial, also voiced the Beast for "The Impossible Planet" and "The Satan Pit"
Dr#4 and Sarah Jane picked on each other all the time, but the picking between them was affectionate and funny. Their relationship was close and intimate, but not romantic, and reminded me of a know-it-all big brother and feisty-but-adorable kid sister.
Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen were naturals together, and were as entertaining to watch as the show itself.
Very understandable why they pulled such high ratings together.
Tom Baker's episodes were the 1st to be shown on PBS in the USA. Those were the days. I think the series was actually better back then, even though the SFX were done on the cheap & looked a bit crappy. I don't think anybody shows the originals anymore, & I'm really not impressed w / the new eps. on SciFi / SyFy.
@knoxvilleguy2 What's needed now is a good strong, older actor like Bill Nihy playing the Doctor, not some good-looking thirty-something. Good plots, good acting and great special effects - why can't they get it right?
Maybe if they could find a John Pertwee - type like one of the " old - school " Doctors. Veterans of years of acting school, stage and screen. They traded good acting for fancier FX.
Tom Baker impressed American viewers during his run as the Doctor in the introductory seasons of Doctor Who, but I've read that he could be as big a schmuck as Chevy Chase off - screen. Disagreeable, temperamental, always had to have things his way.
Ark in Space, Genesis of the Daleks, Pyramids of Mars, Brain of Morbius, and Seeds of Doom are all DrWho Masterpieces that were made during the "Sarah Jane" era of Baker's run when his ratings were consistently the highest ever achieved by DrWho.
From the same era, rating close to "masterpiece" status are also Sontaran Experiment, Planet of Evil, and Masque of Mandragora.
This era lacked modern CGI, but with the GREAT writing, acting, sets, atmosphere and mood, you won't even notice!
Correct therealKINDLE! Tthe 1st 2 serials of Season 17 pulled the highest ratings ever in DW history, at 13.5M and 14.5M. However, the ongoing ITV strike at the time inflated the ratings of those 2 serials. The rest of Season 17 averaged 9.35M, a very good, but normal rating.
The Baker/Ward 10-serial era averaged 8.37M/episode with 11 episodes rating 10M+.
The Baker/Sladen 13-serial era averaged 10.11M/episode with 31 episodes rating 10M+, the highest consistent ratings in DW history.
The problem with Drwho is the same problem that exists for Star Wars. Star Wars was, for a brief moment, something magical, and this moment had such an effect on people, that they were too in love with it to stop watching even when it became painfully lame. Drwho was something unique, on tv or literature - that is, Sherlock Holmes in space, a tv show for children who weren't childish. This gave the show a status that kept fans around even after the show turned into possibly the worst show ever.
lol brilliant dude. Shame you still coulnt edit out the hand that Sutek was sitting on - just think of the pins and needls it must hav felt over the centuries lol. Brilliant as always
