very against trawling, im an avid fisherman myself, hobby not job. im against trawling for what it does to the sea bed, unfortunatly its nto going to stop. everybody has a problem with something, long liners hate trawling, animal rights hate long liners, the list goes on and on. sorry your loosing money trawling seems shit.
@Elenie73 Draggerpeople aint fishermen but escavators that are destroying the fisheries for everyone. Scallop draggers and the people that eat theri stuff are domestic terrorists and too stupid to know it. Ban the carnage now!!
Just another case of misinformation by Greenpeace fruitcakes. Yes , some lobsters are damaged by draggers. Many of these wounds could just as easily be caused by other things. It digusts me to see people get sappy about a sea roach.
Unless the scallop is caught by a scubs diver it is trawled and you are needlessly killing the ocean;s creatures by eating it. Please never ever eat a trawled or dredged scallop!! Thanks for helping the ocean and real fishermen.
u think thats bad? at a retruerant in lake erie, there is a lobster claw machine! live ones too, just sittin there waitin for someone to put in a buck and fish em out.
here in Tasmania,Australia we find our scallops on the sand so the areas where dredges are used only have weed and grass.(which recovers)so crayfisherman like myself are not affected.
Canadians blame trawl/dredge damage on seals and storms so everyone is happy. too bad since we are losing all our marine resources to stupidity and greed.
Well said. Like slaughtering hundreds of thousands of seals a year actually does anything to improve the fisheries. Nothing will change unless the fisheries management does. Scapegoating seals just leads to more mass killing for meager profit.
in the northeast us. we have areas where we lobster where the draggers cant go. if you decide to drop gear where they are dragging your going to have busted up product, and busted up gear. we all have to make a living.
The bottom trawlers are killing all life in the sea hear. Some people make a living from the sea while other are making a killing! Ban ocean killing trawlers now!!

@COHPSCANADA The ocean is pretty vast I dont see how they could do any real damage. These lobsters could have been hit by many things, it gets pretty violent under water. Hand picked scallops are out of many peoples pricerange.
It takes 7 years for a lobster to reach harvest size. So a 2lb lobster is approximately 7-10 years old. Hard to believe it is was once a poor man's food and used for fertilizer
Common now since scallop dredging has been introduced to our lobster fishing grounds. Lobster will soon be rare in SW Nova Scotia and it ain't seals doing it. We are killing the ecosystem.
The damaged lobsters are no good for market and go directly to the cannery thus lowering the overall catch. Dredged scallops are still for sale and are purchased if you can imagine. Too bad.
The problem at the DFO is that the bureaucrats rather than the scientists are in charge. I have been to speeches given by scientists from the DFO and they understand such things as the meaning of the word sustainable; The bureaucrats do not. Another problem there on the east coast and also here on the west coast is that the various "Stake holders" argue among themselves.
Yes. The foreign agenda at DFO here is to get rid of the locals and prepare the ocean for petroleum development. Hard to believe that we have been taken over by a foreign country but we have. Viva Canada!!
The stocks and pristine habitat are being reduced by approx 25% annually. Amazingly, lobstermen regularly eat the cheap dredged scallops! Local people really really hate my amateur work highlighting this. Amost all blame and are killing the last of the seals and now whales to fix the problem!?! :(
Surely there is still a market for these lobsters. What about the frozen tails you see in supermarkets, or lobster meat used in things like bisques, subs, sandwiches, salads, etc. I can't believe these lobsters just go waste.
The lobsters immediately die and are sent to the cannery, Red Lobster or McDonalds for peanuts. Never ever eat at Red Lobster or eat McLobsters. Thanks
We just blame all this on seals and shoot them. People that speak up about Canadian political corruption are intimidated into silence and having to helplessly watch the criminals get rich. Just look at all the corruption that plauges us!!
How come the Canadian people, so much more educated and philosophically minded than their southern neighbours, are allowing each successive Govt. to be more corrupt than the last?
I get broken down once in awhile from the constant pressure and threats from the crooks that profit from Canada's marine policies. I'm the only member of the Green Party in my county for good reason. I try at least. Thanks
Yes I fould this out. Speaking out and going to many demos. Look at clear cutting. Its almost as bad as this dredging. Recently in SURREY, B.C. the city grabbed the only heavy timbered acreage (a park) land because it was free to build a hospital. It went up in secrecy, so noone said nothing. THis is our society. its no better than the U.S>
Thanks. We need all the support we can get from the criminal scallop dredgers and the crooked politicians that get rich allowing all this corruption to continue in Canada. Too bad we are so weak and have no pride as a nation :(
Im glad you are not afraid to comment on the fact we have no pride as a nation.. I do unforunately see this in Canada generally. It gets worse on the West Coast. Try standing up for clear cutting (MacBlo).
I liked your video. I give you the support, Hope it gets better, glad now Im aware of this plight
I don't understand if the scollop trawlers does that then why did the lobsters not get picked up? also did all them lobster's died or were they dead i never eat them just wondering cos if i went to a restaurant and saw a lobby like that i would think eww it's ill or infected if you see my point? i'm from the UK so we don't have the amazing species you guys have
Please never ever buy fishsticks, anything trawled especially dredged scallops. This is domestic terrorism so please don't support domestic terrorism!!
give me a break! do you really believe that 4000 lbs of dragging steel would make tiny little scabs on your lobsters. stop blaming everyone else for your depleting industry, inshore scallop fishermen are always at the bottom of the shit pole and are tired of being scape goats for every problem in every fishery.
Go into a more dignified industry such as drug dealing or child porn than destroying decent peoples livings and the great generous oceans. You are a sick criminal and you should go back where you come from and hide in disgrace and get some serious help!!!
With the price of fuel it is hard enough to make a living without having to deal with that shit. Its like the feds are out to put the independent fisherman down here in the maritime s out of business.
You could say fishermen are putting ourselves out of business by electing the same old bad people over and over. We are defeating ourselves in Atlantic Canada with apathy and greed. We get what we want here unfortunately :(
Turns out trawling and dredging is foreign petroleum development that we have to pay for but have to buy back the oil for our own consumption. It's a mad, mad, mad, corrupt and destructive world we live in and it's hard for us activists to point out all the crimes.
That is a total disgrace, i feel so bad about the loss of your industry as well as the destruction of habitats that the canadian government is allowing to happen, its not as if there is no other way of harvesting scallops!
Thanks for the wonderful comment and I personally believe that Canada is trawling the ocean dead in favour of developing the grounds for oil/gas to give to the US petroleum barons :( Too bad the ocean has to die.
I am currently studying a applied marine biology degree, in scotland, and will be finishing soon. I specialize in lobster biology and ecology. This looks to be a major problem and i will definitely look further into it, if no one does anything then things are going to stay the same.
I have videos of untrawled lobster habitat on here too that may help. The scallop trawl quotas were doubled again this year for this last lobster nursery area so the major industry will be destroyed for $2m worth of scallops:(
That's terrible man, dragging is a very unefficient and destructive way to harvest scallops. It would be the equivalent of cutting all the trees in the forest down to find all the deer. I've heard terrible stories from diver friends about effects of dragging the bottom and the total destruction it leaves behind.
I consider trawling socio-economic and environmental terrorism that has destroyed 100,000s of jobs in eastern Canada and has forever adversely changed our weather to be more violent. I recorded the local lobster crimes for you in this vid. Thanks for caring.
Yeah. I suppose our present fisheries minister will retire to a job as a petroleum executive in charge of drilling our former lobster grounds. What is so weird is that we would re-elect these same people again and...
we just changed government so unions are back and seafood industry strikes are probably the only way to make the government listen to this kind of message. It'd also flush out a lot of black market traders which we can do without. It costs heaps for a licence so it's not fair when someone breaks the rules for their own gains at the expense of the environment. But I like eating scallops so i won't argue so long as they play by the rules i guess.
If we used underwater vehicles we wouldn't need to destroy our $750m lobster industry, our $500m cod industry, our $200m halibut industry...Can you see the big picture? Our fishing grounds are also oil fields so all must be destroyed to get the oil to the States you see.

"Common Purpose" - Subversion
- east coast cod toast
- lobster grounds being destroyed
- west coast wild salmon - sockeye salmon collapse due to sea lice from farm salmon operations
We pay the Canadian Government to destroy our fish
Way to go federal government you're doing a great job of destroying Canadian food sources. Taxpayers pay for the destruction...subversion.
