Not many people know this ,but the first time it happened was the night after the U.S. Olympic team won the gold medal at 1980 Olympics.Myself and about 11,000 other Hawk fans were the only people there .I believe they played the Buffalo Sabres,Im gonna say they lost 3-1 or 3-2.It was amazing.but nothing like 1991,this is the greatest rendition of the anthem anywhere, emotional and in the greatest place to watch any sporting event on the face of the earth.
the tradition goes to 1985 Western Conference Finals vs Edmonton, Hawks came back down 0-2, the fans showing support cheered throughout the anthem, Hawks won that night, did it again the next game, Hawks won, thus the tradition was born!!
The tradition of Blackhawks fans cheering during the National Anthem began in 1985 during Game #3 of the Campbell Conference Finals against the Edmonton Oilers.
