Laguna II is 11 years old , but it still has one of the most solid bodys of any car. The reason for that is that the Renault wanted Laguna to be the first car in history to get 5 star in EuroNcap, so they overengineered the body to the point where it became so solid it would practicly never bend so much that interior would be in danger. And they did manage 5 stars. But the problem is, at speeds like 55 mph, the forces on body are too high, even if car doesnt break at all, you'll probably die.
Laguna II is a safe car indeed doors open up and all but it would be highly unlikely to survive a crash like that for a person anyway so not much point.

@Boss351Mustang a hummer H1 will NOT drive trough a tree like that, on the contrary, most likely the driver will be killed instantly due to the huge decelleration caused by the impact, the body simply cannot cope with that.
Even in a semi truck you might not survive a high speed crash with a tree like that...
No, it doesnt make me think where all that money went. Theyve built the roads with the tax payers money, its just that theyve build it the wrong way. dick.
well people, is time to buy trucks and excavators. Those will surely brake any tree and keep you safe. You can even drive excavators while taking a nap and still, the doors will open.
i think the better solution would be to buy a better car. sure, that renault can stand up well to a crash, but it doesn't handle as well as it should.
i live in america, the capital of underengineered cars like the escalade and ford f-150. i hate it when i'm in my sports car on a country road, and there's an escalade in front of me, and he can only go around corners very slowly.
maybe if you were driving a golf gti or another 5 star car that drives well, the crash could have been avoided.
Doesn't handle well???, the renault laguna chassis with 225R17 tyres like the one in the video is known here for it's sharp handling, the only comment is that the power steering is too much adjusted for low force, more sporty drivers would like this to take more force to be more aware of what is happening with the front wheels.
The handling of american cars on the other hand is that of a rowwing boat compared to this car....
@fietspomp1 of course american cars suck, stop trying to either change the subject or start a troll argument with an american (it won't work on me, i'm the biggest attacker of detroit), but i was under the impression that the laguna is as dull as a lettuce sandwich.
@fietspomp1 i find them dull too, i own the only non-dull one (mazda 6 3.0 v6) which is, in case you've never realized based on the styling, a knockoff of the alfa 159.

yeah ireland has some fun roads to drive a long i remember walking down the road with all the animals crossing the road and tractors and large delivery trucks passing by about 40 and where my aunt lives there is suposedly an old woman that is so short she can't see over the steering wheel and still drivies along the road
rural roads in england in scotland are probably some of the worst roads. they are usually just big enought to fit two cars, they usually don't have any lights and have turnes that are hard to take at 20 mph but people over in britian know how to drive and can drive down these roads going about 50 or 60 mph.
My neighbors wrapped they're Volvo 850 around a tree at 40 mph after hydroplaning off the road. The driver was knocked unconscious and no one would have found them, they were on a rural road, but the passenger, with only minor cuts, ran back up to the road and flagged down a passing truck that drove them to a hospital. The driver suffered a broken arm and some torn ligaments, but they're both fine now.
Oh, yeah, I hate what going on with Saab, I own one, an '03 9-5, and it's such a great car! Volvos are very nice as well. I love the S80/60, XC60, and XC90/70. I almost got an S60, but the Saab was cheaper, so I went with it.
Is that's true, "People dieing in the same place over and over again", if that's EXACTLY the same place, just cut the tree down after the first crash, or will that increace global warming. Pah.
Well, that's exactly what you have in a crash - an explosion that inflates the airbag. There's no other viable way to inflate it that fast. It's a small explosion, don't worry, the size of a firecracker, and with the sole purpose of inflating fast a baloon of gas.
I've had airbags deploy on me and they did not have a flame light that or even a spark. I got a "burn" but it was just from the fast impact and my hands sliding across it, just as you would get a rug burn. It was just a really loud pop and alot of smoke...no flame/fire/spark
Airbags are triggered by an explosive if you don't know. People may even get microscopic burns similar to the ones caused by fireing a gun. Better then having your face peeled off... -.-'
My sister in law owned a laguna for 3 years and it never went wrong, she was lucky. personally i dont believe in luck, i just drive a car i know will be reliable, a mazda 6. one star behind the renault for saftey though.
This one was good, but the Volvo vs. Modus one pissed me off. They took the engine out of the Volvo; a V8 that would've greatly increased it's structual integrity. Otherwise, some of their stuff is ok.
Bullshit? This is the same car Volvo pushed off a cliff; safety cage stayed in tact when it hit nose first into the ground. I don't see an engine anywhere. If there was that bad of crumpling and there was a V8 engine block under the hood, it would have gone SOMEWHERE. The intrusion into the occupant compartment would be much WORSE.
"I don't see an engine anywhere". You dont see it in Modus either, or here in Laguna.
"If there was that bad of crumpling and there was a V8 engine block under the hood, it would have gone SOMEWHERE" Engine would crumple a bit too and yes, theres is intrusion in occupant compartment. Also, i dont think that volvo had a V8...
you can actually prove there is and engine, if you watch one of the replays, you can see flames shoot up by the windscreen caused by the ignited fuel escaping, and that noise when it has crashed is the engine components that where were moving being shattered and stopping abruptly..
misterinley you are very stupid and idiot...the airbag didnt explode, that flame comes from the gas inside the airbag because they fire very very fast...
I knew the passenger cell of the lagunaII is strong, but i didn't expect it to be this stable at such excessive load!, usually when hitting a tree with this speed any car is litturaly ripped to pieces, so this is unbelievably strong....
So, the car performed very well, but i think at this speed the G forces of the abrupt stop involved will be just too high, and so the occupants would at least have serious injury.
Well, the speed was 55 mph, if it was 40 mph, as per EuroNCAP's tests, it would have been better. Besides, if you go off the road, you will probably slam your foot on the brake..
I agree that most collishions are at lower speed as indeed mostly the driver will hit the brakes well before impact, the way this car stands up to a 55mph crash is impressive but at this speed the decelleration of the human body will cause serious injury...
At 40mph the kinetic energy is more than 50% less than this collishion!!!
that was the mechanism that deploys the airbags: the airbags have to literally explode out of the steering wheel and dash board, so it is not surprising to see those flames.
It is completely impractical to put armco barriers around every tree on the road - perhaps it would cheaper for people to drive slower on country roads? Anything over 40 on a country road is too fast.
Country roads are only 60mph because of the lack of traffic and lack of urban-ness. People need to drive less like pricks and do as he says in the video: adapt your driving to the road. It's so blatant. I do that, it's just there are some who think the car will save their life. It'll only do that if you do your part. It's the physics that decides, and you decide the physics.
The tree was dead. Ie, they'd have tested the tree for signs of life. So don't worry, it wouldn't have felt anything.
Poor car? If it was an antique classic from the 80s, you wouldn't have said that, only it looks like you can't appreciate motoring. In other words anything that is old is crap in your eyes.
No problem with the turbo. Don't push when the engine is cold, and cool the system, when it's too hot. Is't perfect for normally use. Our car has 120.000km and no major problem have it jet.
Wow the renault advertisements didn't lie about that car being extremely safe. I certainly wouldn't like having a crash like that one in my Vw Golf MkIII...
It was some kind of injector (30€), the hazard lights button and the A.C. console light (35€), and the driver's side electric window motor. I don't really remember how much that cost. Other than that, no troubles, not even in the turbo. I guess I was just lucky, 'cause I have friends with similar models that had a millions problems.
Possibly. According to stats, something went wrong with at least 50% of Lagunas. But the new Laguna seems to be okay. I would buy Laguna GT, coupe version, it's a thriller.
Yea, 2001-2003 64% of lagunas had some failure. New ones have 3-4%, like passat, mondeo, bmw 3...so its reliable, also its much better built in interior.
most people don't know how airbags work; here's how:
there are chemical tablets in the steering wheel that are responsible for the inflation of the airbags. the tablets are ignited and then 'explode' into the gasses that inflate the airbag. Then the airbag off course must deflate pretty soon, and thats why the gasses come into the drivers compartiment.
gkonsta: "beats all BMW and other "classy" models "
Plus you're more likely to find one of them in this type of situation, because typically they drive like wankers and so put themselves in this type of thing.
very sad to see such a beautifull car be destroy like this....it´s my favourite and i don´t have the money for one...sad to see...

misterinley you are very stupid and idiot...the airbag didnt explode, that flame comes from the gas inside the airbag because they fire very very fast...
legioner9 3 years ago 3
i wouldn't want to have my head hitting an exploding airbag
misterinley 3 years ago
oh no the cupholder!
nipperoid 3 years ago
Yes, the garret turbos of the 1.9dCi engines were very bad, i've replaced it 3 times on 175000km, otherwise a very good comfortable and safe car.
fietspomp1 3 years ago
this was the 2001/2002 model, i would like to see a crash test between this and the new 2008laguna...i think there wasn't much improvement
Pikansokamikaze 3 years ago
well, who? it was already a very safe car and you cant improve it a lot more. id like to see like a 1996 laguna against a 2008 laguna
seltsum 3 years ago
I knew the passenger cell of the lagunaII is strong, but i didn't expect it to be this stable at such excessive load!, usually when hitting a tree with this speed any car is litturaly ripped to pieces, so this is unbelievably strong....
So, the car performed very well, but i think at this speed the G forces of the abrupt stop involved will be just too high, and so the occupants would at least have serious injury.
Impressive engineering from renault although.
fietspomp1 3 years ago 6
Well, the speed was 55 mph, if it was 40 mph, as per EuroNCAP's tests, it would have been better. Besides, if you go off the road, you will probably slam your foot on the brake..
alexkvaskov 3 years ago
I agree that most collishions are at lower speed as indeed mostly the driver will hit the brakes well before impact, the way this car stands up to a 55mph crash is impressive but at this speed the decelleration of the human body will cause serious injury...
At 40mph the kinetic energy is more than 50% less than this collishion!!!
fietspomp1 3 years ago 2
But the Laguna collided frontal and not side, as it appears often.

Poor Laguna ..... cry......
Wiiiplayer55 3 years ago
They should have crashed something shite like a Citroen C1 so see the outcome to crashing into a tree.
OCquattro 3 years ago
Take it you know the C1 is shite then

The airbags exploded and became up in flames!
bcn4e2007 3 years ago
that was the mechanism that deploys the airbags: the airbags have to literally explode out of the steering wheel and dash board, so it is not surprising to see those flames.
alexkvaskov 3 years ago
It is completely impractical to put armco barriers around every tree on the road - perhaps it would cheaper for people to drive slower on country roads? Anything over 40 on a country road is too fast.
bens1972 3 years ago
Country roads are only 60mph because of the lack of traffic and lack of urban-ness. People need to drive less like pricks and do as he says in the video: adapt your driving to the road. It's so blatant. I do that, it's just there are some who think the car will save their life. It'll only do that if you do your part. It's the physics that decides, and you decide the physics.

poor tree and poor car...what heads of dick !
uccellin65 3 years ago
The tree was dead. Ie, they'd have tested the tree for signs of life. So don't worry, it wouldn't have felt anything.
Poor car? If it was an antique classic from the 80s, you wouldn't have said that, only it looks like you can't appreciate motoring. In other words anything that is old is crap in your eyes.
whambam06 3 years ago
he meant poor as in bad feeling ie thay shouldnt have done it

Poor tree ! LOL !

We own one of these. And yes, becouse the five star!
hard83 3 years ago
and don't u care about reability, maintenance..? i'he heard the dci version turbos were shit cause they broke easily...
Pikansokamikaze 3 years ago
No problem with the turbo. Don't push when the engine is cold, and cool the system, when it's too hot. Is't perfect for normally use. Our car has 120.000km and no major problem have it jet.
hard83 3 years ago
great car, classy too!
benhaddy 3 years ago
Wow the renault advertisements didn't lie about that car being extremely safe. I certainly wouldn't like having a crash like that one in my Vw Golf MkIII...
lokodehortaleza 3 years ago
Man i wouldn't sit in a Golf II in a crash like that...
trommejens 3 years ago 2
Very well in order to every car was like that.
kempa88 3 years ago 3
I know it's a generalist comment, but from my experience most country accidents are caused by alcohol/stupidity/speeding/unfamiliarity...

Thank God I own one of those... :s
RarivMorben 3 years ago
But,,,is it reliable?
sspope 3 years ago
Sometimes, lol...
It had a few malfunctions, but never anything that would stop it from running.
RarivMorben 3 years ago
How many and what exactly and how much did it cost you?
sspope 3 years ago
It was some kind of injector (30€), the hazard lights button and the A.C. console light (35€), and the driver's side electric window motor. I don't really remember how much that cost. Other than that, no troubles, not even in the turbo. I guess I was just lucky, 'cause I have friends with similar models that had a millions problems.
RarivMorben 3 years ago
Aha, thanks. Also, what do you think of Citroen C4?
sspope 3 years ago
No ideia. Never driven one ;) But they look good...
RarivMorben 3 years ago
My parents owned Laguna 2.0 16v Dynamique from 2001. to 2006. and nothing ever happened to it.
So i guess not all are bad, only some models
derbigpr500 3 years ago
Possibly. According to stats, something went wrong with at least 50% of Lagunas. But the new Laguna seems to be okay. I would buy Laguna GT, coupe version, it's a thriller.
sspope 3 years ago
Yea, 2001-2003 64% of lagunas had some failure. New ones have 3-4%, like passat, mondeo, bmw 3...so its reliable, also its much better built in interior.
Laguna GT coupe sure it beautiful.
derbigpr500 3 years ago
I like especially how it corners.
sspope 3 years ago
OMG...
the front like wrapped around the tree...
did anyone else see the 'explosion' when the airbag went off...
and look at all the gases coming out when he opened the door...
the car held up pretty well... but it didnt look that pleasent
sfalconI6 3 years ago
thats the airbag itself,
most people don't know how airbags work; here's how:
there are chemical tablets in the steering wheel that are responsible for the inflation of the airbags. the tablets are ignited and then 'explode' into the gasses that inflate the airbag. Then the airbag off course must deflate pretty soon, and thats why the gasses come into the drivers compartiment.
ollebolle9550 3 years ago 2
ok... thanx for that...
sfalconI6 3 years ago
And then you still have stupid people saying that only Volvo or Saab can build safe cars...
At 55mph into a tree and the doors still open in a normal way, that car is amazingly safe.

beats all BMW and other "classy" models

gkonsta: "beats all BMW and other "classy" models "
Plus you're more likely to find one of them in this type of situation, because typically they drive like wankers and so put themselves in this type of thing.
whambam06 3 years ago
You mean BMW owners?
sspope 3 years ago
That's a strong car, obviously.
