  • very sad to see such a beautifull car be destroy like this....it´s my favourite and i don´t have the money for one...sad to see...

  • Пидарасы, бедное дерево!

  • now crash a 1 star car ...just for the lolz :)tbh im gonna buy a 1.9dci also as soon as i get the money

  • Now see, I have a big old truck. So, the tree would be fine. The truck would be fine. I would be f*cked.

  • Laguna II is 11 years old , but it still has one of the most solid bodys of any car. The reason for that is that the Renault wanted Laguna to be the first car in history to get 5 star in EuroNcap, so they overengineered the body to the point where it became so solid it would practicly never bend so much that interior would be in danger. And they did manage 5 stars. But the problem is, at speeds like 55 mph, the forces on body are too high, even if car doesnt break at all, you'll probably die.

  • So what about the poor tree :P :D!!!

  • 15 Germans dislike---- Instead of using dummies why not use joy riders better results on persons in car.

  • WOW, Renault Laguna is surely a very safe car compared to others.

    Luckily I have one...

  • Once i've driven through the A682, and a giant squirrel attacked me!! That's a very dangerous road!

  • Laguna II is a safe car indeed doors open up and all but it would be highly unlikely to survive a crash like that for a person anyway so not much point.

  • tha gives ya a headace. So cold and clever comment on a crash.

  • good job it didnt have a V6 3.0L engine in it

  • RIP Laguna

  • This guy is a cock, he recommended speed cameras

  • get onstar????

what makes these new cars not let the engine go through the cabin where the driver and the passenger sits?

  • get onstar

  • outch that can ruin anybodys day. At least it ruins my day

  • Come to see a Polish road safety map. There is not only few km like in UK.

  • Buy a HUMMER H1 and go through a tree without a scratch!!

  • @Boss351Mustang a hummer H1 will NOT drive trough a tree like that, on the contrary, most likely the driver will be killed instantly due to the huge decelleration caused by the impact, the body simply cannot cope with that.

Even in a semi truck you might not survive a high speed crash with a tree like that...

  • Could have a hellfire missile mounted on the car, and blast the tree before the impact lol

  • No, it doesnt make me think where all that money went. Theyve built the roads with the tax payers money, its just that theyve build it the wrong way. dick.

  • No worries that will buff out

  • Ok, hey stop, stop, stop!!! Dont you dare complaint about your roads, go to Norway, we probably have 80% 1 star roads xP

  • "you would wonder where the 5,5 billion pound road tax is going to..." Same here in Belgium, my dear friend, same here... :-(

  • the coupee model of this renault is on my top favorite list! it has also 4 wheel steering

My compliments for 5 th gear for this and they state of the art camera's who have survived impact to show is the inside of the car.

    Great show and great Renault

  • 6:20 just a scratch!

  • well people, is time to buy trucks and excavators. Those will surely brake any tree and keep you safe. You can even drive excavators while taking a nap and still, the doors will open.

  • UK country roads simply sucks. I have never seen so tight roads anywhere in EU, Highways are ok but rest is just some kind of joke..

  • @sweetbounty You should see Croatian roads then, mate ... !

  • renault laguna a fantastic car and so so safe i love them i now own my 3rd laguna and i feel so safe when driving it well done renault :)

  • I own a Volvo, so Im not afraid of that :D

But really, Renault and Volvo have same safety company and they work together on that.

  • Naja, der Laguna hat sich wirklich gut geschlagen. Ich hätte da erwartet, dass der Baum irgendwo zwischen den Sitzen stecken wird.

  • Deceleration from 55 miles per hour to stand-still in just 1 meter cannot be survived. No way.

  • The solution to making roads safer?

Pay attention and avoid hitting trees at all costs.

  • i think the better solution would be to buy a better car. sure, that renault can stand up well to a crash, but it doesn't handle as well as it should.

i live in america, the capital of underengineered cars like the escalade and ford f-150. i hate it when i'm in my sports car on a country road, and there's an escalade in front of me, and he can only go around corners very slowly.

maybe if you were driving a golf gti or another 5 star car that drives well, the crash could have been avoided.

  • @coolerdude44

Doesn't handle well???, the renault laguna chassis with 225R17 tyres like the one in the video is known here for it's sharp handling, the only comment is that the power steering is too much adjusted for low force, more sporty drivers would like this to take more force to be more aware of what is happening with the front wheels.

The handling of american cars on the other hand is that of a rowwing boat compared to this car....

  • @fietspomp1 of course american cars suck, stop trying to either change the subject or start a troll argument with an american (it won't work on me, i'm the biggest attacker of detroit), but i was under the impression that the laguna is as dull as a lettuce sandwich.

  • @coolerdude44 A dull car doesen't neccesairily have poor handling, and here in europe people tend to find reliable japanese cars dull.

  • @fietspomp1 i find them dull too, i own the only non-dull one (mazda 6 3.0 v6) which is, in case you've never realized based on the styling, a knockoff of the alfa 159.

  • @coolerdude44 they drive ok. you would probably be going faster in a gti...

  • 4:15 see the flames on he left hand side of the car. did the ngine just explode?!

  • @sarge991 no, that's the airbag exploding

  • thank u i didn't know that!

  • @sarge991 thanks man, sarcasm accepted any time.

  • @coolerdude44 i wasn't being sarcastic

  • i can't believe he evensuggested a speed camera!!! :O absolutely disgraceful, all those little c**ts do is make u stare at your speedo when it should be at the road so that some little cock in an office gets more money

  • I really could not crash such a car :S

  • Great Renault Laguna is a a revolucionary car ! First 5 stars in EuroNcap Ranking ! GREAT !!!!!!

  • my good i love renault crashing at 55 mph into a tree and dors open just like that ........ for me renault no1.

  • 88km/h :/

  • it's renault, it's OK to crash!

  • they are stupid!

    Crash this very good laguna

  • adrianc12345 i have tested all the renault car twingo rs clio rs megane rs its wery good car but if u wan to drive very very hard in road testit laguna coupe or laguna gt 4 well stering i swear u will not fell the road its like to drive remote controll car

  • amazing car

  • i love renault . im a bicykleracer and in the name of renault i have created my bike. u cand find it here its named Renault nepta_bike

  • @NIKOLLLAAA1 I like the Twingo RS, what about you?

  • yeah ireland has some fun roads to drive a long i remember walking down the road with all the animals crossing the road and tractors and large delivery trucks passing by about 40 and where my aunt lives there is suposedly an old woman that is so short she can't see over the steering wheel and still drivies along the road

  • rural roads in england in scotland are probably some of the worst roads. they are usually just big enought to fit two cars, they usually don't have any lights and have turnes that are hard to take at 20 mph but people over in britian know how to drive and can drive down these roads going about 50 or 60 mph.

  • LOL you should pay Ireland visit. Combine trees with hugh potholes, sheep, pedestrians and people driving in the middle of the road in SUVs....

  • My neighbors wrapped they're Volvo 850 around a tree at 40 mph after hydroplaning off the road. The driver was knocked unconscious and no one would have found them, they were on a rural road, but the passenger, with only minor cuts, ran back up to the road and flagged down a passing truck that drove them to a hospital. The driver suffered a broken arm and some torn ligaments, but they're both fine now.

  • @jrodigan5 Wow, shows that even old Volvos are reasonably safe.

  • Yeah, Volvos, and Swedish cars in general, are really safe cars.

  • Too bad for Saab though, they had pretty good looking cars. I own 2 volvos, and am going to get the new XC70, such a nice car!

  • Oh, yeah, I hate what going on with Saab, I own one, an '03 9-5, and it's such a great car! Volvos are very nice as well. I love the S80/60, XC60, and XC90/70. I almost got an S60, but the Saab was cheaper, so I went with it.

  • Top Gear is much better. That guy likes to boss around the camera man like hes all that. watch the volvo vs modus video and youll see what i mean.

  • 40% of our roads are inadiquite...and they never do shit about it, I love it. :)

  • ...no comments ...they are just stupid....

  • What a road !!!

  • make them like toy cars

    the little die cast ones

  • safamilan -you are a zero

  • lol that poor bloody tree....

  • i don't think many people go head first into a tree, they're more likely to hit sideways as they skid around a corner.

  • have you some one crash test of opel calibra ?

  • At 4.44 i thought it was going into that first tree....

Most trees that kill people have preservation law on them so they cant cut them down..

So when people die the last thing they see is a nice 400 year old tree....lol

  • lol :D

  • @LotusCarlton09 At least they save the lives of pedestrians...

  • Well that was exciting....I have a Renault Laguna lol......

  • Is that's true, "People dieing in the same place over and over again", if that's EXACTLY the same place, just cut the tree down after the first crash, or will that increace global warming. Pah.

  • Comment removed

  • wat was the explosion in the car at the time of impact?

  • That's the airbags pirocartriges.

There are two sets - one to inflate the airbags, and second on the seatbelt pretensioners.

  • I understand the pretensioners have pyrotechnics but is it visible in a crash? It'd be kinda scary to have an explosion next to your face.

  • Well, that's exactly what you have in a crash - an explosion that inflates the airbag. There's no other viable way to inflate it that fast. It's a small explosion, don't worry, the size of a firecracker, and with the sole purpose of inflating fast a baloon of gas.

  • airbags:)

  • airbags

  • they should just show the crash test not the whole fuckin episode

  • I'm glad to have one like this :P

It's not just the safety, this car is really comfortable to drive.

  • couldn't agree more

  • I think noone can show a safer car than renaults.

  • WHY SPEED CAMERA they give you nothing but bill after bill after bill and then you miss your driver lisenge

ps my english is not the best in the world

  • try that with an old volvo

  • Old Volvos were safe 15 years ago, not today.

  • @HB45175 The safest Volvos 15 years ago were as safe as the most unsafe small city cars produced today.

  • @HB45175

    lol

No, volvo was not that safe

and this car (Laguna 2) have about 11 years old

  • 5 star or not..lol

  • trees :(

  • I've had airbags deploy on me and they did not have a flame light that or even a spark. I got a "burn" but it was just from the fast impact and my hands sliding across it, just as you would get a rug burn. It was just a really loud pop and alot of smoke...no flame/fire/spark

    doesn't look safe...at all

  • Airbags are triggered by an explosive if you don't know. People may even get microscopic burns similar to the ones caused by fireing a gun. Better then having your face peeled off... -.-'

  • did the airbag like, flame on its way out?

  • The explosion of the airbag is monstrous...

  • My sister in law owned a laguna for 3 years and it never went wrong, she was lucky. personally i dont believe in luck, i just drive a car i know will be reliable, a mazda 6. one star behind the renault for saftey though.

  • Renault Laguna is a great car

  • Isit me or does all the people on 5th gear piss you off??

  • This one was good, but the Volvo vs. Modus one pissed me off. They took the engine out of the Volvo; a V8 that would've greatly increased it's structual integrity. Otherwise, some of their stuff is ok.

  • No they didnt take the engine out of volvo....dont talk bullshit because obviously you dont know what they did with the car.

  • Bullshit? This is the same car Volvo pushed off a cliff; safety cage stayed in tact when it hit nose first into the ground. I don't see an engine anywhere. If there was that bad of crumpling and there was a V8 engine block under the hood, it would have gone SOMEWHERE. The intrusion into the occupant compartment would be much WORSE.

  • Yes, bullshit.

"I don't see an engine anywhere". You dont see it in Modus either, or here in Laguna.

"If there was that bad of crumpling and there was a V8 engine block under the hood, it would have gone SOMEWHERE" Engine would crumple a bit too and yes, theres is intrusion in occupant compartment. Also, i dont think that volvo had a V8...

  • you can actually prove there is and engine, if you watch one of the replays, you can see flames shoot up by the windscreen caused by the ignited fuel escaping, and that noise when it has crashed is the engine components that where were moving being shattered and stopping abruptly..

  • Yes. They all seem to have had a personality bypass.

  • bloddy hell thats a stiff car.

  • Oo 5 stars*****

  • Laguna :-D Love them! This does however make me very eager to uprgade from my 2000 Sport Mark 1 to a Mark 2 GT!!! One day soon - as I am only 18 :-D

  • poor tree

  • misterinley you are very stupid and idiot...the airbag didnt explode, that flame comes from the gas inside the airbag because they fire very very fast...

  • i wouldn't want to have my head hitting an exploding airbag

  • oh no the cupholder!

  • Yes, the garret turbos of the 1.9dCi engines were very bad, i've replaced it 3 times on 175000km, otherwise a very good comfortable and safe car.

  • this was the 2001/2002 model, i would like to see a crash test between this and the new 2008laguna...i think there wasn't much improvement

  • well, who? it was already a very safe car and you cant improve it a lot more. id like to see like a 1996 laguna against a 2008 laguna

  • I knew the passenger cell of the lagunaII is strong, but i didn't expect it to be this stable at such excessive load!, usually when hitting a tree with this speed any car is litturaly ripped to pieces, so this is unbelievably strong....

So, the car performed very well, but i think at this speed the G forces of the abrupt stop involved will be just too high, and so the occupants would at least have serious injury.

    Impressive engineering from renault although.

  • Well, the speed was 55 mph, if it was 40 mph, as per EuroNCAP's tests, it would have been better. Besides, if you go off the road, you will probably slam your foot on the brake..

  • I agree that most collishions are at lower speed as indeed mostly the driver will hit the brakes well before impact, the way this car stands up to a 55mph crash is impressive but at this speed the decelleration of the human body will cause serious injury...

At 40mph the kinetic energy is more than 50% less than this collishion!!!

  • But the Laguna collided frontal and not side, as it appears often.

  • Poor Laguna ..... cry......

  • They should have crashed something shite like a Citroen C1 so see the outcome to crashing into a tree.

  • Take it you know the C1 is shite then

  • awqesome video!!!!!!!

  • great video! thx for uploading!

  • The airbags exploded and became up in flames!

  • that was the mechanism that deploys the airbags: the airbags have to literally explode out of the steering wheel and dash board, so it is not surprising to see those flames.

  • It is completely impractical to put armco barriers around every tree on the road - perhaps it would cheaper for people to drive slower on country roads? Anything over 40 on a country road is too fast.

  • Country roads are only 60mph because of the lack of traffic and lack of urban-ness. People need to drive less like pricks and do as he says in the video: adapt your driving to the road. It's so blatant. I do that, it's just there are some who think the car will save their life. It'll only do that if you do your part. It's the physics that decides, and you decide the physics.

  • poor tree and poor car...what heads of dick !

  • The tree was dead. Ie, they'd have tested the tree for signs of life. So don't worry, it wouldn't have felt anything.

Poor car? If it was an antique classic from the 80s, you wouldn't have said that, only it looks like you can't appreciate motoring. In other words anything that is old is crap in your eyes.

  • he meant poor as in bad feeling ie thay shouldnt have done it

  • Poor tree ! LOL !

  • We own one of these. And yes, becouse the five star!

  • and don't u care about reability, maintenance..? i'he heard the dci version turbos were shit cause they broke easily...

  • No problem with the turbo. Don't push when the engine is cold, and cool the system, when it's too hot. Is't perfect for normally use. Our car has 120.000km and no major problem have it jet.

  • great car, classy too!

  • Wow the renault advertisements didn't lie about that car being extremely safe. I certainly wouldn't like having a crash like that one in my Vw Golf MkIII...

  • Man i wouldn't sit in a Golf II in a crash like that...

  • Very well in order to every car was like that.

  • I know it's a generalist comment, but from my experience most country accidents are caused by alcohol/stupidity/speeding/unfamiliarity...

  • 1st five Stars!

  • Thank God I own one of those... :s

  • But,,,is it reliable?

  • Sometimes, lol...

It had a few malfunctions, but never anything that would stop it from running.

  • How many and what exactly and how much did it cost you?

  • It was some kind of injector (30€), the hazard lights button and the A.C. console light (35€), and the driver's side electric window motor. I don't really remember how much that cost. Other than that, no troubles, not even in the turbo. I guess I was just lucky, 'cause I have friends with similar models that had a millions problems.

  • Aha, thanks. Also, what do you think of Citroen C4?

  • No ideia. Never driven one ;) But they look good...

  • My parents owned Laguna 2.0 16v Dynamique from 2001. to 2006. and nothing ever happened to it.

So i guess not all are bad, only some models

  • Possibly. According to stats, something went wrong with at least 50% of Lagunas. But the new Laguna seems to be okay. I would buy Laguna GT, coupe version, it's a thriller.

  • Yea, 2001-2003 64% of lagunas had some failure. New ones have 3-4%, like passat, mondeo, bmw 3...so its reliable, also its much better built in interior.

Laguna GT coupe sure it beautiful.

  • I like especially how it corners.

  • OMG...

the front like wrapped around the tree...

did anyone else see the 'explosion' when the airbag went off...

and look at all the gases coming out when he opened the door...

the car held up pretty well... but it didnt look that pleasent

  • thats the airbag itself,

most people don't know how airbags work; here's how:

there are chemical tablets in the steering wheel that are responsible for the inflation of the airbags. the tablets are ignited and then 'explode' into the gasses that inflate the airbag. Then the airbag off course must deflate pretty soon, and thats why the gasses come into the drivers compartiment.

  • ok... thanx for that...

  • And then you still have stupid people saying that only Volvo or Saab can build safe cars...

At 55mph into a tree and the doors still open in a normal way, that car is amazingly safe.

  • beats all BMW and other "classy" models

  • gkonsta: "beats all BMW and other "classy" models "

Plus you're more likely to find one of them in this type of situation, because typically they drive like wankers and so put themselves in this type of thing.

  • You mean BMW owners?

  • That's a strong car, obviously.
