  • Right On Marshal Dillon.

  • This was the second pilot. "Hack Prine" was done first, in 1954. I think HP is a better, more logical episode that does a better job of introducing the characters. Real lawmen would have their guns already drawn and probalby have plenty of help in dealing with Grat. Matt recovers far too quickly. Grat, like "Wilson" in Shane is just fast-he doesn't aim. He has to be close. But first confrontaiton is in the steet and the second indoors. And the US governemtn would have gone after Grat in force.

  • That's Paul Richards..a great character actor Jim gunned down there.

I wonder how many notches he's got on the gun he has there.

  • Great episode but I hate seeing someone faster than Matt. I guess that is the kid in me.

  • God, I love these shows.....Mrs. Kitty's mole on her cheek is missing though...lol

  • Thanks for posting this episode which I dont remember seeing and yes kitty certainly looks different. I DVR all episodes of gunsmoke from encore , tv land, and whmb 40 but dont lhave the gunsmoke channel. But most of the episodes are from the 60s and 70s none or rarely from the 50s.. I wish they would just start from episode one and run all the way thru but no one does that.

  • That guy is slightly retarded.

  • i was going to ask what happened to chesters leg ,bu til take yall word for it that its a character thing because i dont remember mccloud limping

  • weaver was on for 9 yrs and also directed many episodes in the later years

  • If there is an episode which recounts the Chester injury which gave him the limp, it would be that episode which contains the flashback.

  • Denis Weaver placed a small pebble in his boot at first to remind himself to limp. Many of Arness's walking scenes do not actually show his legs, other scenes only show the legs for a step or two.

  • The LIMP: Chester limped from day one. He was given a limp after James Arness was cast as Marshall Dillon due to the fact that Arness himself had a slight limp due to an injury he received in WWII. The Producer felt that giving Chester a severe limp would keep viewers from noticing the hero's a limp. Later, after the Marshall had been shot a few times they did not hide it. Arness's injury often made it difficult to mount his horse and he was rarely shown doing a complete mount.

  • @scrabblemaster56 the limp was weavers idea as told by him in his interview in 2002.

  • John Wayne was offered the pasrt of Matt Dillon, turned it down and suggested Arness for the role.

  • No body shoot Matt and gets away with it. Love it.

  • I'm not the world expert on Gunsmoke, but I know Chester got his limp in another episode. So what was it? a flash back in a later episode? He was wounded in some fight and got a limp

  • I definitely detected a HINT of the famous John Wayne walk at the very end! As the Duke predicted, Arness went on to become a great star. Please post more of these?

  • could you add hot spell?

  • The wonderful show of gunsmoke has arisen!

  • The beginning of the Matt Dillon and Miss Kitty aera

    Thank you :o))))))
