OMG !!! Frank for sure is smiling on this young lady ! That's a tough one that only the ambitious even attempt, and at 12 ... incredible !!! I wish more young people were this dedicated. Keep it up ! I know we'll be hearing more from this gal behind her kit when she's touring with some hot band as an adult !
I'm not a drummer. Just a mere mortal youtuber. Discovered these drum videos after searching youtube for camera 'test videos'. Ended up spending the entire weekend surfing for drummer videos and enjoying them. I enjoy reading the comments. You have a healthy community of drummers encouraging and coaching the younger ones. Drum videos I watch at the moment are those of - Sara, Senri, and that pop drummer in that street in Taiwan.. and there are still more to check out. This is cool..
I've seen several of your videos Sara, you are a great drummer. I never thought I would ever see a 12yr old in this era playing drums from Frank Zappa. I was wondering who influences the music you listen to and learn? music teacher/parents? The reason i ask is I grew up listening to Zappa ...i'm 45 :(
I havn't heard many younger people listening to Zappa in recent past. It's unfortunate as there have been many great musicians play with Zappa.
When I first played it, I had the sound of on my laptop, so I turned it on, and I thought it sounded horrible, but then I realized I still had a song playing on iTunes! Ahaha. Great job, ma'am! I truly enjoyed it:)
As a fellow drummer let me tell you how proud you make the whole drumming community. My "mentor" as it were, is Dave Weckl. I prefer traditional drums over electronic, but electronic makes practicing a lot easier and my wife is spared the headache....lol.
Not very often is a person born with a "gift" like yours. A natural ability. I know you don't have as much time to practice as you would like, but I would implore both you and your parents to try and make the time.
she seems to be able to play this by route-very hard to do, this song is hard to play even with sheet music. can she read music or is she playing naturally? she is much more advanced than i was at 12, i assure you. this is one of rocks hardest drum pieces ever. its called the black page because it has so many notes. good luck to you dear.
It's a shame that this 12-year old who challenges herself only gets 24,000 hits since May 2008, and that overrated douche Travis Barker gets 31 million hits for playing something that this 12-year old could play in her sleep. Oh well.
Keep at it and keep challenging yourself. Amazing, kid!
She did much better with King Crimson........ but hey...... trying to play The Black Page #2 was even hard for Terry Bozzio! She'll be fine if she continues to use Frank as a benchmark.
I wish I could have actually even comprehended(or even heard) and could even attempt to think I might be able to play at least half of this song when I was 12..... think big!
I disagree with borralhoo you goget it girl, keep pushing your limits and there is nothing you wont be able to do. Great musical taste as well, just remember at all times that the importat thing is expression. Techique is a tool for expression but techique alone is not expression.
She should start with simpler stuff, and getting it nailed. There's 2+ flaws every second in this video. Blackpage at age 12...take it easy..it's not a race. It's best to play things that are less dificult but well executed.
No. One pushes themself. "more than 2 flaws per second" is a *bit* much (but it does make you appear 'expert'?). It's best to play things you are challenged by,
'Nailing it' is a professional criterion; we need to apply it to a 12 year old, who's mom was proud and uploaded to youtube?
She does need to tighten up her time. So did I at 12, I rushed things. It's what you do at 12. At 13 maybe she gets schooled by someone on it and ultimately urns pro, where one has to 'nail it'..
who ever is your family it make me feel great! most children they don't know, and probably will never know about the good tunes that changed the history of music, just look around, tell me if you find something innovative as the old groups elo, elp, yes, crimson, zappa, purple, rush, zeppelin, jethro, genesis, etc etcetc makes me feel worthy CONGRATULATIONS, THIS ARE EXAMPLE OF GOOD PARENTS WORTHY TO follow....
I've always said to people that if you think you're good at something, there's always a 12-year-old in Japan who can do it better. Looks like we found that 12-year-old. :) Great drumming.
It's not perfect yet (tending to play the longer melismas a little under speed) but it's a bear of a piece of music to memorize....very serious undertaking at any age. Congratulations and keep up the great work!
Amazing stuff. I'm sure that if Mr Zappa were alive today, he'd be delighted to know that there is a twelve-year old Japanese girl who can play the hell out of this very difficult piece. Keep it up!
This was excellent. Zappa truly would be proud, it's great to see someone your age embracing this kind of music instead of the latest trendy boy band. Congratulations
Sara, you are amazing! It's so nice to see someone so young turned on to FZ's music, and to play so well. Good for you, and kudos to your parents for supporting you! Keep it up. Maybe we'll see you on stage with Dweezil one day!
Sara, this is really amazing. Only a few people can play the Black Page perfect, and you are already near to it. I hope you will get in a good band and maybe you can play with Bozzio himself one day.
I am very impressed with your playing. As you know and have heard a thousand times already, you are very talented and have a the world in front of you. If you have time to respond, can I ask how you got started playing Zappa and what other influances do you have? Dave in florida.
Get a band. I want to see you live. Because you are incredible. What is amazing is that you are better than most professional drummers in today's music
I am speechless. In total awe even. When I was your age, I still couldn't play a full power chord on guitar. Now I'm almost twice your age and I still couldn't play this piece on any instrument. You have talent far beyond your years. Zappa would be proud. On that note, how come there aren't more young people like you getting into his music? :(
young lady.. you're really gifted and i pray that God will continue to bless you abundantly in this area.. i'm a drummer myself.. but looking at you, by the time you reach my age, you would have rocked the world.. ;) i only started playing at 16.. it's been 9 years.. but you're a fresh splash of talent to me.. keep it up!
good job, just like DruidTM, when i was 12 yrs old i was jamming to nofx and bad religion, i didnt get into Zappa till recently, good job must have took a while to learn all those rolls.

Wow, this is really really awesome!! This accuracy is really great and the musical feeling in you is really respectable!!
But I ask myself whether you decided to play drums for yourself or your parents kinda forced you to? (I hope this question does not go too far?)
But anyway: GREAT JOB!!

This is one of the coolest things I have ever seen in my life.
Steve Vai transcribed this song by ear and sent the transcripts to Mr. Zappa. That is what got him noticed, and what got him the job in Zappa's band.
I am sure if Zappa were alive today, he would notice you too.
Look forward to seeing you play with Dweezil and the gang. ^_^

Hi,I'm her mother.
We don't mean to ignore your questions.
We are so busy or don't know if you want answers, but we are very sorry the way you felt.
Sara leaves home 7am for school and comes back 11pm with us because of our job.
Few time to play. If she gets extra time, she would play the drums. She had more time to play when she's young.
Weekends, spend on drums 8 hours or even more.
I don't know much about her kit.
She'd just finished her mid term exam, she will try to aonswer.
