Death, Celtic Frost and Possessed defined this genre!!! I am 42 now and having nothing but great memories of the shows in the Bay Area at Ruthies Inn, The Stone, Mabuhay Gardens, etc. In my own opinion nothing will ever come close to the thrash/death metal/ hardcore scene of the mid to late 80's!!!
i hate when ppl criticize musicians for playing different genres of music or playing in different bands.it doesn't change the fact that larry was in one of the greatest and first death metal bands of all time.same can be said about blasko who played with ozzy...he was in one of the greatest hardcore bands of all time"CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER".....as ppl age they open up to more and expand and experiment more.does not mean that they are posers or false.
exactly... the bottom line is this,, the best bands have musicians that draw influence form ALL types of music,,, that way they dont become stale, one trick ponies..
here we are talking about TRUE Possessed - best band ever! and it was Mike Sus's drumming and Mike Torrao's riffing and leads combined with Jeff's growls that made them so unique...altho Sus couldn't play as some people here claim...
I was 16 and attended this same show, went home and played the vinyl over 100 times before nailing the entire album on my axe,Thanks for the memories man,I should've took a Camera with me that day.
CC covered this song!! CC werent even formed when Possessed came out !!! Possessed opened many shows for Slayer,Exodus,Legacy,etc.... you guys must be baby metalheads or posers!!
You're saying Possessed covered a Canibal Corpse song? LMMFAO. Interesting given that Possessed put this song/album out at least 3 years before C.Corpse came onto the scene.

Nah..Megadeth is alot more successful...plus you can actually understand what the heck they're playing and saying...Possessed I have never even heard of until now. And someone being a HUGE Metallica fan like myself, giving props to Megadeth...is a big deal. lol. Possessed i actually have to say just sounds like they're all winging it and making it up as they go along. haha. Possessed, in my opinion...SUCKS. (relatively)
Well, obviously, this video is in some really poor quality, but if you were a real metal fan you'd like Possessed. I think Megadeth is better too, but Possessed is pretty fucking sweet :)
and zoinkz, i have two problems with that statement.
1. its "invent" not "event"
2. just because they had a song called "death metal" doesnt mean that started it! look possessed isnt rly that good. seven churches was theyre only "good" album and even then, the none of the musicians are good at their instruments, espcially the drummer, Mike sus
yeah sorry, it was like 6 am when i wrote this so errors were imminent. And I didn't say they started it, i said they started the term "death metal" for this kind of heavier music.
thrasherreider666, I remember the post you're talking about. I noticed that the poster had the keyword 'Primus' in the tag... That had me wondering about him because no true Possessed fan would mention Primus as having anything to do with Possessed.
evilaggression, can you tell which venue this was from? I know I saw Possessed in West Baltimore in 1987 at a place called Channel One. Mike Rhodes put on the show and I think he promoted a Cro-Mags show at the same place either a few weeks before or after Possessed.
Somewhere i have a really shitty copy of the show I am talking about on vhs.
thanks for posting this Balto classic. Do you remember VSD and Rancid Decay from Balto in like '86-'88? VSD is on youtube now.
@ohiogrinder I know Lalonde is in Primus. I don't know any Possessed fans from back in the day who listen to Primus or try to link that band to Possessed because its so dramatically different. There... that should be cleared up now.
@evilaggression But it's both a legitmate and logical link as Lalonde played in both. Be kinda like denying Ron Woods had a history before The Stones. Either way you can hear the huge influence this had on Black Metal.
I agree with you. Mike Torrao is an underrated musician who should get credit for his amazing work in Possessed. Larry LaLonde was an amazing guitarist at the age of 17! And Jeff Becerra, possibly the greatest death metal singer in my heart. I find it unfortunate that Mike Sus however is done with music and he is off to bigger better things. He did some sick drum work especially with his opening of "Death Metal".
Evilagg you rule dude. Nice video. And yes, you're a lucky bastard for seeing them with Megadeth.
I'm pretty sure Larry Lalonde the only thrash guy playing a Fender strat at this point. This was a great band. Too bad they didnt last longer. Jeff Becerra, every picture I've ever seen of him from this era he's in a Dark Angel shirt.
