I know this might be a silly question but does the video uploaded or anybody know where I might be able to find videos on the L series diesel engine? I find loads on the K series/KV6 but none for the river diesel engine? Many thanks I you can help me
It costs a fucking bomb to do this, £200 for the tools, £200 for the timing belt kit, and at least ten years off your life with stress trying to do it! All for a crappy gutless engine that that actually uses MORE fuel than a four litre jag (I know, ive owned both types of car...) !!! Stick with a BMW or Ford 6 cyl engine for a cheaper and better engine!
Taking into account that Rover made this video I can only assume that they would know much better than anyone how a timing belt goes on one of there engines. A nightmare of a job too by the looks of things!!!
This vidoe is incorrect i have just done my timing belt water pump & replaced the idler pulley, if you set your timing to the line on the oil pump housing like on the clip ypu will most defenetly bend valves, you have to line up the crank notch to the safe mark which is on the front timing case housing, not the oil pump housing so beware!!!!
@bagnall36 hi dude this vid was done by Rover and powertrain the company that built the kv6 and so far 30 odd people have used it to rebuild their engines etc and
had no probs myself i drive a 825 coupe daily 130,000 miles on the clock most reliable car i have owned and like the others i have used the vid followed the routine and no probs
@kv6coupe I follow this mucka & bent 6 valves on the inlet, i set the 2 secondy belt with the v notches facing each other & the v in the crank to the line on the oil pump housing it ended in tears, if you read the haynes manual it tells you to line it to the safe mark on the outer timing case cover i did this once i had the valves & head skimed & now it runs like a dream again so i dont no, the manual contradicts this clip, even down to the rear belt alignment.
@bagnall36 Hi mate, did you use the proper timing tools? I do a lot of these KV6 engines and have done to many to mention over the years and although they do vary a little with different models which means different plates for the camshafts, they are all pretty similar and i have never had any problems. But like i said you can make mistakes and it can bend valves if you not careful. But what i do is when i have done the belts i turn the engine over by hand and check for binding and contact.
@bagnall36 What for an engine you have?I have an kv6 mk2,and when I lock the crankshaft with the locking pin on flywheel, the v in the cam belt-pulley isn't correct to the oil-pump housing,it's two tooth ahead.
but the mark on the belt-pulley match with the save mark on the timing case.give it a difference at the mk1,
mk2. ,2.0 , 2.5 litre engine?i dont can believe, that the engine is build so incorrect.
you be right, the instruction-routine points to the save mark.I'm confused.
Hi, just got this cambelt done on my MG ZS 2.5 180 and its costing me £600 inc water pump - Got an AA warrenty so dont need to worry about the head gasket blowing, as its all covered!!!!
Give me a Honda 2.7 V6 any day. Much better engine and capable of galactic mileage and 32 mpg if driven carefully. Plus it won't throw its 'toys out the pram' and you don't need expensive, locking set just to change the timing belt.
I've got a ZT 190 KV6, 27mpg average around town and 38-40 at cruise, you must have been driving everywhere flat out - or id had something very wrong with it.
No I didnt drive everywhere flat out! even on the forums they say you struggle to get more than 20mpg round town, so you must have a "special" car then!!! mine was in perfect running order and like i say, 18 roundtown and 25 MAX on a run, it was terrible, I had the 190 like yours on a 2004 plate, my mate who had a 2002 ZT160 V6 said his wasnt much better with 20 around town and 27-28 on a run! Even my BMW 728i does better than the with 24 round town and 29 on a run!
My Rover 800 KV6 Auto Coupe has only ever done around 18-20 around town and 25 MAX on a run. Official Figures were URBAN 18.9, EXTRA URBAN 37.9 COMBINED 27.8. The Manual KV6 800s are supposed to do URBAN around 41MPG! My urban is therefore not to bad, Maybe I should lower my speed by 20/30 MPH on the Motorways!!! to increase my EXTRA URBAN. Never found the aircon on or off altering it, so mostly drive with it on now. My 2.0 Vitesse did 39.
@steveoz32 That's bullshit, my 2.0 KV6 get 16mpg around town, and 27.5mpg on average (if i'm careful), and this is almost EXACTLY what the handbook says it should get!!! My 2001 4.0 v8 LWB Jag XJ8 got 17mpg around town, and 24.5mpg on average!!!!
@discocreator76 I've had the KV6 for 3 years, the MPG never dropped below 34 on average. I drive it as careful as I can to get the best MPG because it's not a car to race around in, changing gear at 2k or below and crusing at 65. The manual for the 190 says 38.8 extra urban cycle, that includes half of steady speed and other half idling, stops and accelerations up to 75 mph, so my figures are entirely achievable.
@discocreator76 P.S. please don't tell me fact is bullshit - have you tried checking your VIS motors to make sure the intake is working correctly? Fuel consumption in my book for the 2.0 is 40.1 extra urban and even nearly 30 combined, it sounds like your figures are a little lower.
@steveoz32 My handbook supplied with the car says 25.4 ave, 34.5 extra urban, which is more or less what I get.... you are living in a dreamland, the KV6 is crap!
@discocreator76 no, I'm sorry to say it's likely just your 2.0 KV6 that is crap lol, it's doing less mpg than my 1800kg 2.5 190 o.O even my 911 is getting similar milege to your 2.0! The Kv6 is a great motor - no issues in over 50k of running here (and approaching 100k), they will easily run to 150k+ and are complete bargains. I bought my ZT as a cheap runaround a few years ago, It's a great reliable comfy barge to run around in and economical for it's size. If you hate it, sell it - simple lol
Dont get me wrong , I love Rovers and MG (ive owned more than 20 in the past) but I was unimpressed by both the performance and the economy when I got mine 2 years ago...
Many Thanks, I fixed my 1999 Rover 800 Coupe with just 42k miles on the clock. My brother even made me the necessary tools! Cost me less than £150 for the rebuild. Saved mine, hopefully this video will save a few others too!
That was mention to say rover not river!!!!

Why do you have to take the pulleys off? you can remove the belt off the pulleys and replace the belt without doing it?

Bullshit, Crank pullys move on the rubber, thus making the safe mark incorrect
