Heraclides Ponticus said in the 4th cent BC that Rome was a greek city, Livius Andronicus (a Greek) was the first Roman poet and some of the first Roman historians wrote in greek (3rd cent BC). Except for satura (satura tota nostra est) there is no other "pure" Roman genre.
The education in "Byzantium" was greek & roman but over time the greek part grew stronger while the other atrophied.

Constantinople was adorned with greek statues (even of pagan gods), the basic texts in school were the ancient greek (Homer, Plato, Aristotle) and the christian ones (written in greek language too). There were a lot of icons of ancient greek philosophers, poets etc even in churches, but almost none of latin ones.

The Patriarch of Constantinople appointed by Mehmed II removed the Greeks from unity with the Catholic Church on June 3, 1453, just 5 days after the Turkish conquest. From what I can tell, God has punished the Greek people these last 500 years for their obstinacy in schism and error.

@jorgecarrillo2 Hagia Sophia belongs to the Turks by right of conquest. Further, Hagia Sophia was a Catholic church when Constantinople fell. The Patriarch of Constantinople appointed by Mehmed II removed the Greeks from unity with the Catholic Church on June 3, 1453, just 5 days after the Turkish conquest. From what I can tell, God has punished the Greek people these last 500 years for their obstinacy in schism and error.

@jorgecarrillo2 One thing to think about too, if God were on the side of the Orthodox church, why did He not deliver the Greeks from the Turks after June 3, 1453? He allowed Constantinople to fall into the hands of the Turks because the heart of the Greek people and clergy was still schismatic. Constantine XI and the Greek Patriarch at that time were Catholics, but the clergy and people were not. I'm sure when the Greeks give up their schism, Istanbul will revert to Greek Christian rule.

@mackbee628 I know that there are two kind of orthodox, those more alike to end schism with catholic church and those, mainly clerics, who keep thinking tha God created Islam to protect orthodoxy from Catholic Church, a very blasfemous thinking. If we catholics want to convince lay orthodox people that many orthodox cleargy are irrationally anticatholic, they will be more alike to porsue not necesarily conversion, but comunion.

@jorgecarrillo2 Agreed! Especially those monks on Mount Athos. The overwhelming majority of Orthodox people hold the monks of Mount Athos in high regard, I even dare say higher than the Patriarch of Constantinople himself. I do hope that I can see the end of the Greek schism in my lifetime.

Hagia Sofia is one of the greatest buildings in Turkey. It was the biggest church and than the biggest mosque. It is important for christianity and islam. And it is a symbol of frinedship between 2 religions

@swedisse If that's going to happen, ALL the Slavic nations, Romania, and the Greeks will all need to work on bringing more children into this world. The last I checked, Russia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, Macedonia, Ukraine, Moldova, et al all have declining birthrates. Turkey and Muslim Albania all have high birthrates. At that, Turks are all over Europe now, and they're having children like crazy. Europe will be Muslim within 50 years unless the birthrates increase!
