Tape is insulator, wheels/track are the plates, forming a Capacitor
A capacitor is an open circuit to the "power" (current) of the DCC voltage the signal part (pulses) representing the data of the DCC packet, telling the decoder what to do, get through to the Gold decoder, due to the Gold decoder’s design.
Loco on tape. USP powering loco. Direction change makes the corresponding change in the DCC packet info. The pulses get through to the decoder. Decoder reverses the motor
If the loco is running on the stay alive, how is it getting the signal to change directions? While on the tape or whatever that is.

How on earth does it receive dcc signals in order to reverse when travelling over the insullation? Magic!

WOW! that really makes a huge difference. Is 30 cm the maximum distance it will travel? Or can it go further?
