At first I was in support for no, but over the last week and reading up about it and seeing how the myths aren't logical, i now feel AV is a better system. I'm only 22 and have only voted once in a general election and what I voted for was practically a waste vote. Especially since i live in a place which has been conservative for decades and no real change has happened and the town looks more destitute and derelict the more the years go by.
@thehandbag the TPS only blocks certain calls. if you have indirectly agreed to be on the database it is legal and as thats the list thats used we have no idea who is on the TPS. AV isn't biased towards any party it is simply more representative as would STV or PR. I see this as progressive reform; maybe AV is what we need if so we keep it if not we consider other reforms but a YES will destroy the archaic two party FPTP sstem
thehangbag is either deluding himself ('the coalition will HAVE to do a proper deal for change'- who's going to make them? The Cons wouldn't even allow a referendum on AV+,nevermind PR) or he has a hidden agenda in getting people to vote in favour of FPTP- which is unfortunately a tactic people are using to divide those who do want electoral reform
If anyone's hoping for PR then look at what it took to get this referendum, who's fighting against it,& ask yourself if PR will be offered if it fails
As I understood it, only America & UK adopt FPTP in it purest form.
Who would u choose Al Gore or Bush in 2001 USA election under FPTP?! If AV exist Bush certainly wouldn't get 8 years in office and I don't want a UK version of Bush!
When I went to a Yes to FV phone bank they wouldn't tell me were they got the poor peoples numbers from, I was meant to dodge the question if asked and drop the call if they persisted. They had millions of peoples phone details, ages etc.. - where did they get the data from they gave me? Anyway - your better off voting NO - the coalition will have to do a proper deal for change rather than this miserable AV system. Have a look at my videos.
@thehangbag Two things 1. VOTE YES this is about reform and if we say no then we can forget it for another 80 years. 2. The data is from the electoral role, when you register to vote you have the option to opt out of being on this database. It is legitimate and available to all parties or in this case campaigns. Shame you weren't told.
@petehall1985I suggest you get the supervisor to indemnify you against calling any numbers which may be TPS. If you vote yes you will get no reform - AV is biased towards the LibDems and they would lose out under PR see.av2011.co.uk
I want reform but I fear what will happen if we get AV - the very real outcome would be a fall in people voting - which I'm sure you agree is bad for democracy. So what then? If AV proves a disaster do you think it would encourage politicians to press ahead with further reform or simply revert back to FPTP? I fear we'd simply revert back to FPTP and then NEVER get PR.
AV is a poor system and using party elections as an example only fills me with more dread.
@mat5379 why would voting numbers fall when everyone's preferences actually count, when you can support a candidate you truly want without your vote being thrown away, and when politicians have to work to appeal to their entire constituency because they're not assured a victory? Voter apathy is caused by people thinking there's no point in voting, that they can't make a difference, which is the exact opposite of AV.
We'll never get PR if people vote no here, which is of course what some want...
@mat5379 I am unaware of any country reverting back to FPTP and those countries that do use it don't use it for all elections. What happens usually is further reform. It's progress most big reforms happen over time and rarely through revolution.
I hate it when in an election I am torn between voting with my heart or voting tactically, the dominant party's always urging me not to waste my vote,we should bring an end to the tactical vote fiasco, its ok for them to elect their leaders with av,but then they argue it is wrong for the nation,eh! Vote Yes to AV,it is the most important needed change since women got the vote.
This is NOT a proportional representation system and completely destroys the democratic ideal of one person one vote.
Our system may need changing but this is NOT it.
AV is anti democratic.
The system is so flawed that only 3 countries in the world use it - Australia, Papua New Guinea and Fiji and I know (my family are from Austrailia) that Australians hate it.
If you believe in ONE PERSON ONE VOTE then VOTE NO
@mat5379 and still some humans believe in the Bible Story!! time for change. Humans are getting more informed and new better ways are comming in to stop corruption and fraudulant voting as done with labour
@mat5379 I have lived in Canada and they don't use FPTP;it depends on the state(same as US); . It is only the national election that is FPTP and that is under review. The same applies to the US again FPTP is only used for national elections not at stae leveland there are lots of checks and balances which we don't have. This is about REFORM av was the offer but sayying no means no to any reform. vote as the site says 'for fairer votes'. AV may not be perfect but its more representative than FPTP
Not sure why you are slagging off Conservatives. I'm a Conservative (though on the centre of the political spectrum, hence why I'm happy to have the Lib Dems tempering the more right wing elements of the Conservative Party), and I'll be voting Yes on May 5th, and have been campaigning as part of the "Conservative Yes" campaign in my local area.
You shouldn't vote just to annoy a particular party or MP, or vote Yes/No because your Party tell you to, you should vote because it's what you believe.
AV will be the end of Tory Governments. Considering their rich serving ideologies and the taxing of the middle and working classes to pay for the failings of the rich elite, this can only be a good thing. Why should the country be ran by a party that has not achieved 50% of the peoples votes????? How representative is that? If u have any sense Vote AV. If the big tory argument is that the change will cost to much why not tax your good friends the Bankers bonuses which we pay anyhow as taxpayers
@danddevlin We shouldn't be voting yes on party political grounds. Then you defeat the point of a fairer and more democratic system. And despite not being a Tory in any way myself, you have to be a bit more realistic about our situation, taxing "your good friends the bankers bonuses" is not a means in itself of getting ourselves out of our economic situation. Its all you hear from the left, and until they come up with a sensible alternative, they're going to be laughed at till kingdom come.
@williamtuohy Are you a secret Tory lol. The tories are campaigning for a no to AV as they know that a more representative system will be the end of tory governments, it is as simple as that. Now as for the "Taxing your good friends the Bankers Bonuses" if you take the time to read my comment you will see i said it as a means to pay for the electoral System changes and not as a cure for the Economic situation.
@danddevlin Sorry, I did jump to conclusions about the taxing the bankers bit, I do favour a slight taxation on bankers bonus's, but just get sick of it as a constant get out clause. I should let you know that I am of the center left of the Lib Dems and support the yes campaign strongly. I am just wary of the line or argument which encourages one to vote "yes" for party political reasons, it seems to undermine the point of av, which is to create a fairer and more proportional electoral system.
AV will not be a benefit to the system, it is simply a con. Also the money spent on this fabricated waste of time and space, would better spent on encouraging the 40% or so dillusioned voters, who have never walked into a ballot box.
The AV could actually work out worse than the FTFP system anyway, because it will enhance the grip of the three main parties through its 1st 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th options.
Why ditch 1 person 1 vote in favour of some people getting multiple votes? I hope the phone bankers explain why when we inflate the number of votes they become worth more – and are less open to manipulation from politicians, and how all these new minted votes will deliver the better world suggested in the vid. Also I hope they reassure us why some of these new votes wont be spent on the BNP and other racist parties.
@cjkingdon read the material, watch the youtube videos and listen to the relativley objective tv journalists iits a transferable vote. you don't vote more than once you simply continue to have your vote counted by it being allocated to your second choice. this stops tactical voting, two party dominance, and allows you to vote with your heart to represent your world view. And if you need a true majority of 50% the BNP and communists aren't likley to get in;
At first I was in support for no, but over the last week and reading up about it and seeing how the myths aren't logical, i now feel AV is a better system. What nonsense - FPTP is the second most widely used voting system in the world.
Apart from the UK - you can add US, India and Canada for starters - there are MANY countries that use FPTP.
Also, I want reform but AV isn't the answer.
