I do wanna be a DJ, but I literally do not know where to start.
Sure, I did some research on some equipment, and set a budget. The only thing that holds me back is what will I do AFTER I get my equipment (which isn't gonna happen anytime soon since I'm such a money spender).
Seriously, if you want to be a DJ and make good money doing it, you have to first learn music, old and new... what ever genre you want to start out with. practice, Practice, PRACTICE!!!! Then, practice some more. When you feel you are good enough to play out... do it for little or no pay at first. This will eventually pay off. If you are good your name will get out and they WILL call you but you do have to advertise yourself. You'll figure it out.
Totally can relate to the relationship pressures there. It puts a lot of pressure on relationships, not just by the temptation issues but also about day time sleeping when your partner wants to go out for the day.
DJing can start at any age. I started at 15. Just got my 12 year old sister started. I started with 2 CD players, cassette player, and a home stereo system. Didn't have a mixer. But now I got a laptop with virtual DJ on it. I still work with all my CD's but the cassettes are history. I sold them all to a DJ who did old school parties. I made pretty good money when I started but I make more money then any of the kids at my high school in one night.

Brian, just wanted to say thank you very much for this 'brief' synopsis of what it means/takes to become a DJ. Not a music major, idk how much that hurts, but willing to learn. Thanks again.

Dude, you rock! JK about that drunk thing on the other video, lol. Seriously though, this was the best "Want to be a DJ" video, your input was awesome and I could totally relate to it.
Brian, good video. I too started with a radio shack mixer, 1978 RCA turntable, and the most minimal of equipment. I do want to echo a few of your points: 1. hours are tough. 2. Temptation is around every corner, what gives you the edge is not drinking, and learning how to say no to not offend anyone. 3. Learn from an experienced DJ, and not one that has been gifted everything - like one starting with all digital gear. After 19 years, I'm still upgrading gear...it's half the fun.
Well done and thankyou, I am a musician considering a career move to DJ work, your introduction was invaluable, I hope you continue to post lessons an getting started.
hey ive been getting into this recently and ive had alot of people ask me first thing how much do i charge and to be honest i dont know whats fair.
i was hoping you could help me with this.
im not really into weddings although im not opposed to doing them if someone asks but i do mostly parties and events and i dont know what to charge
i think i do a decent job and i have a good sounding setup but i dont even know where to start with charging if i should do by the hour or by the event or what
oh man the relationship part is dead on!! so is the hours...coming home late wakeing up late....i agree with all this! great video...p.s. i dj in the wisconsin dells area.
im thinking of getting numarks pro dj in a box, so that i can get cue LE, the total control, djio(sound card) and some cheap headphones for alot cheaper than i would seperetly. then im going to get some better headphones and use the crappy ones as backups and buy 2 speakers from bestbuy for about $150 each. this will all cost me about $800 do you think this is a good idea? my other option is about the same but runs me up to $130 but i get the full virtual DJ
Nah, in fact, most older guys have an advantage: They know about a few decades worth of music first hand and are usually more socially advanced than a kid would be.
The only trick bad many older guys get into is having no intirest in new music. You gotta be a rolling stone to do this.
Its a good vid man. im past this stage tho been doing this on and off for 7 years now. ceratinly not a fulltime career 4 me. If you do anymore of these i would definatly include the fact that this is hard stressful work and if you cant handle stress then its not for you
Hi Brian. I'm Ben and I'm 14, and I'm not really a professional, but I've DJed for up to crowds over 600 by myself, and gotten paid, etc. I have my own equipment, and all that other 'stuff' and I've DJed over 20 gigs already. I was wondering... How should I approach a DJ company and ask if they need help?.. I know I'm still young, but I would really love to help a big company out. Do you know how I should approach them?
Most established DJs or DJ multi opps out there won't take you on until you are 18. Some may do 16, but 18 seems to be the norm. I'm sure there are kids out there who have pulled it off. You should ask them how they did it.
I have decided that I won't take anyone on until they are at LEAST 18 and have a dependable vehicle (on top of several other requirements)
Your next question is probably "Why". Well, I've had nothing but bad experiences with young people on the road. EVERYONE says they are the acception to the rule, but what usually happens is they are more of a distraction from my gig than an asset.
I need people to drive to the gig, show up on time, Stay late if nessessary, leave early if nessessary, run for emergencys if nessessary, shut up, and listen. I just can't get that from under 18 kids
Iv deejayd in clubs using the pioneer of setups and have never deejayed in a pub, party, wedding etc.not my style/scene of music, I dont even have mobile speakers or amps. Clubs is just what i liked so i just started recording my mixes and handed them out to clubs and landed a few gigs now and then. I usually play tech or electro house.
hey brian im 13 and really want to start DJing, i havent got my equipment yet but planning on buying a DJlab2.1 which it around $500 i wanna go digital too but SSL is way to expensive, so i plan on using torq m-audio, which i heard is just as good, anyways could you give me tips before i actually start DJing, please
Hey, Love the video! I'm 14 and i do mobile DJing with some of my friends. I only do small party's or discos but it's a nice flow of money.
You said 13,14,15,16 year olds aren't ready to take on mobile djing i think that's wrong. It depends on how mature and driven they are to do some thing. I know some one who is 13 and has been doing it for a few years now.
Keep making videos, Brian. I really want to learn about DJing, unfortunately I have no real-life tutors or mentors (yet). It's just me, my lone turntable and my vinyl. :p Though I hear that digital DJing is the way to go.
Well Brian, Im 15 and have my first gig in 3 weeks. This has inspired me and has made me thought. A local DJ has taken me under his wing, and i have a very nice system to start out with. This is something i will do forever. Thanks for your advice.
I used to check my amps with oscilloscope to find how far they can go and still produce nice sine wave output....
This may be overkill, a good ear will do just fine.....
When you set up at a gig, try to get a feel for how the room respond to various sound levels.... remember this will change significantly when you fill the floor with people. Make sure to get out on the far side of the floor every now and then to check how it sound like from the receiving end.
Good imput, but I think you have posted these comments on the wrong video. The Protect Your Hearing vid was the one posted before this one.
Feel free to leave your comments here, but you may want to consider doing some copy/paste work on these comments so thoes watching THAT video can check them out :)
It was actually for this vid... If i were more photogenic id do a tutorial on oscilloscoping your amp.... (quick search on youtube show some caraudio guys doing it when setting amp gain).
I think you already mentioned something about EQing i don't really remember... anyways when your out and about you should compile some examples of different venues (shape and size), and how to adapt to and utilize the room for your sound stage. Unlike you, I suck at explaining stuff. Your a naturalborn mentor!
You've probably mentioned this before in one of your countless videos.... but its a common pitfall for new and even some that have been gigging for quite some time... In my opinion its a problem that your standing BEHIND your sound stage.
Speakers a to a large degree unidirectional (most of the sound is and should be projected the direction they are pointed.)
When your behind your sound stage, you have a different sonic perspective than your crowd, wearing headphones ads to the problem....
great in fo for those up coming dj's. brain i got a quick question or great video idea. would you recomend downloading music at a gig using a wirless card from the laptop.? but bare in mind u are using the space on the laptop hd not no external one, while gig is going on. in my option i wouldn't dare because its to much on the internal hd.
hey man im 13 and am looking to be a mibile dj. i alredy have my own pa but unfortunately nobody is going to take me seriousley until i am older. how could i change this situation? i like the video!
Everyone will have an oppinion on this subject. Mine may be a bit more harsh than others but this is only because I've been there.
At 13, 14, 15, most people are not ready to take on mobile DJing. I know many of you feel you are the acception to the rule, but so does everyone else. It's often a credibility issue.
Now is the time to learn about ALL kinds of music, collect this music, watch other DJs, listen to other DJs, etc so you are more prepaired when your time comes :)
i actually agree. i do need to follow a dj and learn more about mixing because that is the thing that i am lacking most. other than that more music and maybe a new light or two could help but i agree that experience and time are the key factors standing in my way. thanks.
real humbling watch there man, real talk laid down
ive been scratchin for the better half of 2 years and now at the point where im thinking "hmm, maybe i should learn to mix" but its only been contemplation and nothing else
im still yet to mix but ill definately do it when i feel comfortable
Glad you made this vid, Brian. I just had this discussion with a DJ friend last night, how people always think this is the easiest job in the world. Just like any other profession, it has its drawbacks and those thinking about doing it should research before jumping in with both feet, but there's little else I'd rather do. While friends complain about their dead end jobs, crappy hours, lack of respect, etc., I get to talk about how much I love what I do.
Hey Brian, I love you buddy, you make good videos and give good advice... but I do not like this video.
I think that some of the things you said simply don't make sense. Like the talk about DJ companies who might look at you and say that you don't have what it takes... What is this? A beauty pageant? A popularity contest? NO! DJ'ing is less about the person, and more about the music and individual skill. I think you are talking more about a special type DJ'ing, and you should specify that.
To be really really really honest, if somebody were to say to you, "I want to be a DJ, but I don't know a lot about music..." then your answer should be, "Then maybe you should think about doing something else."
Too many people want to become DJ's for the wrong reasons. 'Women and booze' are NOT good reasons. The greatest DJ's are the ones who love music more than almost anything, and have a need to share it. Loving and knowing about music is an absolute necessity, but they can be learnt.
yeah that would seem to be the most logical answer. Sometimes, it's not a matter of not knowing music as much as it is not knowing about different kinds of music. That's where working with someone else comes in handy. I know I learned about a lot of party favorites that were before my time when I went to work for someone else.
Read this just after finishing a bar gig tonight. Group of 20 year olds mostly, In small town Canada I find myself asking at that age (20) was I ever that stupid? :-) Speaking only of the fellas.
Depending on venue, bar and club gigs are nice but it depends on the crowd you're dealing with. For those just getting into it, I agree you really have to have a healthy mind set and realize - you're not going to please everyone all the time. Alcohol sometimes brings out the worst in people as well.
Ah... the jealous wife syndrome... i got some scars to commemorate my ex wifes way over the top, rabbit boiler jealousy. *lol* (and i honestly didn't ever do anything "naughty")
Nice video Brian. ..this morning I got some question on my mind and I was looking for answers about become a professional DJ, I'm acting at small gigs, like weding and birthday parties, but nothing so big...I want to keep a nice ralationship with my family but I want to be DJ too...so,this vid brings to me a better way to thing about it! So, what can I say? Thanks for the help!!!
great comment about the relationships,.... i always say that to people starting out.... i know it was a huge deal with my gf of over 2 years with jealousy issues, when i just love to entertain.
I got really lucky, my Dad had been a Dj for like 20 years or so before he passed all his equipment down to me. So I got to see a "Professional" DJ in action quite a bit. I upgraded all the equipment except for 2 sets of speakers that are still kickin' really weel still.
As for the tough schedule of things... Yea I do construction during the day, Dj weekends, and I'm a Volunteer Firefighter... So I hear what you are saying there.
We need more vids about this, I dj for free and the dj's here are co**suckers don't want to help out, so im out there doing my own thing alone on top of that got laid off from work. i have to say doing it for free or getting paid for djing doesn't matter to me
great video Brian i started off with two surround system cd players only one that had a "pitch control" on it and a $20 mixer i bought at a garage sale... it definitely is not about the gear.. even though it is nice to have all the shinny stuff its not necessary
Good Video Biran! Good Points!, I started DJing When I Was 13, (1988) I went on gigs with my school teacher With "records" I Was Good With music but, my teacher taught me about the gear! Lilke you, didn't get my own gear until I was 23. But to You (New DJ's Out There) need to go and get experiance with other DJ companies. You Can't Be C.O. In 1 Day! Practice & Enjoy and Learn!
One thing you forgot to mention is can you talk to people. haha thats my problem, i have all the equiptment and skill to dj, i'm just shy and cant talk in a microphone. and it sucks. haha
"I'm home by 3...and I don't go to bed right away" XD you're so right man! Really interesting vid...and compliments for your work as a professional dj since you were 13! (I'm still not sure I understood the right age XD)
This is one of the debates that I constantly got into back Sri Lanka. I used to do Radio station promotions and there are people who work for the radio station that called them selves as DJ's but didn't know how to spin a record only did the presenting part (Announcers).
I started calling them Radio-station presenters or radio-show hosts, instead of DJ's and I think that is more appropriate.
For an instance, a sports announcer or presenter is never addressed as a player.
maybe you should use the tag "professional" as well cuz when i would be a home-dj i ofc wouldnt have that trouble :) But just my 2 cents.
Many thx for the vid, it rly makes things clear what pro djs are going through to get their job done. Hope you keep it up cuz I totally want to learn more about it :) cheers!
Definitely expand on the whole temptations part. I seen many djs F--- up their careers by letting it all go to their heads, getting into the whole drug scene and really crash n burn in the biggest way.
Or the dj who hooked up with some hot lady at a club or function and once she's got him snagged, she demands that he give it up.
Or the "entourage" of people that come around when your on top of your game only to go onto the next big thing.-seen it all
I remebered when i got home 4 oclock in the moring after deejaying packing equipment and stuff my mother went off on me whoo deejaying is far from eazy its not jus playing music i really agree with you
great video brian i myself started when i was about 12, luckly for me lived in the ghetto and had lots of djs who had gigs around who let me tag along. i started with some home gear and gear i bought from pond shops that i think were better then new less xpensive gear, very important what u say im almost tweenty five an i been threw 2 realationships with kids at first the women are okay but after start to change and start thinking things even when theres no motive....
I think the last Two and a half minutes are the most important part of this video. These are the things that most people forget about when thinking about DJing. Everything else is all over and is just common scene. I worked a 3rd shift and the job was fine but after a while the hours started to ware on me. And yes.. just because you want to sleep doesn't mean the world will let you. Great vid. Important stuff.
I do wanna be a DJ, but I literally do not know where to start.
Sure, I did some research on some equipment, and set a budget. The only thing that holds me back is what will I do AFTER I get my equipment (which isn't gonna happen anytime soon since I'm such a money spender).

After 19 years, I'm still upgrading gear...it's half the fun.

hey ive been getting into this recently and ive had alot of people ask me first thing how much do i charge and to be honest i dont know whats fair.
i was hoping you could help me with this.
im not really into weddings although im not opposed to doing them if someone asks but i do mostly parties and events and i dont know what to charge
i think i do a decent job and i have a good sounding setup but i dont even know where to start with charging if i should do by the hour or by the event or what
xinjudgmentx 2 years ago
I always ask where the event will take place.
If it's in a backyard or basement, you will need to drop the price if you want to fill the date.
If it's at an expensive hotel or country club, they can usually afford the rate of a professional.
Also ask how many guests are expected. This info may give you a clue of what they are wanting to spend. (maybe)
Weddings are where the money is.
In the midwest ....
Friday Nights go for around $500-$600
Saturday Nights are selling for $800-$1000

im thinking of getting numarks pro dj in a box, so that i can get cue LE, the total control, djio(sound card) and some cheap headphones for alot cheaper than i would seperetly. then im going to get some better headphones and use the crappy ones as backups and buy 2 speakers from bestbuy for about $150 each. this will all cost me about $800 do you think this is a good idea? my other option is about the same but runs me up to $130 but i get the full virtual DJ

Is it hard for older guys to get into this?
Highgatehostel 2 years ago 4
Nah, in fact, most older guys have an advantage: They know about a few decades worth of music first hand and are usually more socially advanced than a kid would be.
The only trick bad many older guys get into is having no intirest in new music. You gotta be a rolling stone to do this.

SurpriseItzDJBen 2 years ago
Most established DJs or DJ multi opps out there won't take you on until you are 18. Some may do 16, but 18 seems to be the norm. I'm sure there are kids out there who have pulled it off. You should ask them how they did it.
I have decided that I won't take anyone on until they are at LEAST 18 and have a dependable vehicle (on top of several other requirements)
briansredd 2 years ago
Your next question is probably "Why". Well, I've had nothing but bad experiences with young people on the road. EVERYONE says they are the acception to the rule, but what usually happens is they are more of a distraction from my gig than an asset.
I need people to drive to the gig, show up on time, Stay late if nessessary, leave early if nessessary, run for emergencys if nessessary, shut up, and listen. I just can't get that from under 18 kids

I know some one who is 13 and has been doing it for a few years now.

briansredd 2 years ago
I used to check my amps with oscilloscope to find how far they can go and still produce nice sine wave output....
This may be overkill, a good ear will do just fine.....
When you set up at a gig, try to get a feel for how the room respond to various sound levels.... remember this will change significantly when you fill the floor with people. Make sure to get out on the far side of the floor every now and then to check how it sound like from the receiving end.
ProAudioFanatic 2 years ago
Good imput, but I think you have posted these comments on the wrong video. The Protect Your Hearing vid was the one posted before this one.
Feel free to leave your comments here, but you may want to consider doing some copy/paste work on these comments so thoes watching THAT video can check them out :)
briansredd 2 years ago
It was actually for this vid... If i were more photogenic id do a tutorial on oscilloscoping your amp.... (quick search on youtube show some caraudio guys doing it when setting amp gain).
I think you already mentioned something about EQing i don't really remember... anyways when your out and about you should compile some examples of different venues (shape and size), and how to adapt to and utilize the room for your sound stage. Unlike you, I suck at explaining stuff. Your a naturalborn mentor!
ProAudioFanatic 2 years ago
First of all its an absolute MUST to know how much your gear can handle, and keep all your gears out of the "red".
Don't push your master out faders (or any other) too far over 0db and for my ears sake don't fucking ever drive your amps into hard clipping.
ProAudioFanatic 2 years ago
You've probably mentioned this before in one of your countless videos.... but its a common pitfall for new and even some that have been gigging for quite some time... In my opinion its a problem that your standing BEHIND your sound stage.
Speakers a to a large degree unidirectional (most of the sound is and should be projected the direction they are pointed.)
When your behind your sound stage, you have a different sonic perspective than your crowd, wearing headphones ads to the problem....

Now is the time to learn about ALL kinds of music, collect this music, watch other DJs, listen to other DJs, etc so you are more prepaired when your time comes :)
briansredd 2 years ago
i actually agree. i do need to follow a dj and learn more about mixing because that is the thing that i am lacking most. other than that more music and maybe a new light or two could help but i agree that experience and time are the key factors standing in my way. thanks.

I think you are talking more about a special type DJ'ing, and you should specify that.
mgband 2 years ago
It's one of thoes videos that's a take it or leave it kinda thing. Like I said, this is just my take
briansredd 2 years ago
To be really really really honest, if somebody were to say to you, "I want to be a DJ, but I don't know a lot about music..." then your answer should be, "Then maybe you should think about doing something else."
Too many people want to become DJ's for the wrong reasons. 'Women and booze' are NOT good reasons. The greatest DJ's are the ones who love music more than almost anything, and have a need to share it. Loving and knowing about music is an absolute necessity, but they can be learnt.
mgband 2 years ago 6
To mgband:
I fuc*ing agree 100% with you dude.
SJS.
StevenJSousa 2 years ago
yeah that would seem to be the most logical answer. Sometimes, it's not a matter of not knowing music as much as it is not knowing about different kinds of music. That's where working with someone else comes in handy. I know I learned about a lot of party favorites that were before my time when I went to work for someone else.
briansredd 2 years ago
Read this just after finishing a bar gig tonight. Group of 20 year olds mostly, In small town Canada I find myself asking at that age (20) was I ever that stupid? :-) Speaking only of the fellas.
Depending on venue, bar and club gigs are nice but it depends on the crowd you're dealing with. For those just getting into it, I agree you really have to have a healthy mind set and realize - you're not going to please everyone all the time. Alcohol sometimes brings out the worst in people as well.

Or the "entourage" of people that come around when your on top of your game only to go onto the next big thing.-seen it all
I could do 20 vids on this whole subject.
