First off, I TRIED watching this. I made it through the first 20 minutes, saw the "soup" scene, and shut it off, thinking I'd come back another time.
3 WEEKS LATER, I mustered up the courage to come back. I watched five more minutes, and I realized the movie was only getting worse.
Why does everybody like this movie? I'd hate to be crass, but... it SUCKS!!! There is not one redeeming quality about it, unless I'm missing something.
I saw this once. and only once. a previous poster was correct. That little squirt was horny little booger. And so was everyone else. Some of the scenes were a bit off putting. The scene with the pregnant woman puking over the rotten animal head with eels spilling out of its eye sockets was a "gag-a-maggot" puke inducing gross out. I thought the film was over-rated. I'm sure it has its fans, but its one of those films you watch once, and never see again.
@patrick9648 another one of those kinds of films would be "Salo, or The 120 Days of Sodom". I was duped into seeing that under the premise of what was called, by the trusted recommendation of my assumed friend, an "enlightening and ground-breaking work of cinema". baloney! i wanted to cry for days after seeing that garbage.
Oscar's mother in the movie makes me think about my Oma. My family were in this area during the War. All the men were killed on the East Front fighting the Soviets. My Oma (and my Mom who was a baby) had to flee one night because a friendly old Polish man warned her some Polish women were going to come by and either try to hang her or hand her over to the Russians when they arrive. They escaped but Oma had to live a very hard life trying to care for my Mom. They ate nothing but caraway seeds...
@turgore Oscar at age 7 decides he's not going to grow old because he's disgusted with the world around him. He is not in any scenes that depict graphic sex. He is in one scene where we know he is having sex, but you don't see anything because he's under the covers. There is another scene with nudity that is just plain funny. The reason why this film gets banned is because the people that ban it have no idea what the movie is about. The book won a Pulitzer Peace Prize. People should grow up.
I read this amazing book last year and was actually in the Polish Post Office in 'The Free City of Danzig' at the same time as I was reading that chapter in the book. The Stockturm is still there too, Gdansk is a fine city. I've never seen the film but the book is absolutely superb. I think it's sad that a censor would ban the film over that scene. Oskar is very much a man in that scene, not a child though he has chosen to remain the size he is.
Love the movie I think its funny people are getting worked up about the young kid having sex with adults because it really is metaphorical for he is emotionally like a kid but everything else develops like a man. I think the eel part is the coolest.
I suppose the film is meant to disturb the viewer and make them think. In any case, there is so much cinematic trash out there by comparison, glorifying everything bad in human nature. I have never really understood that showing cruel murder scenes and horror for pure pleasure of the audience is perfectly acceptable, a very moderate sex scene involving a child actor however is considered evil. Nobody would complain if Oscar had been killed at one point in the film..... strange moral views.
is he really a child or is he a midget? because that would be VERY sick to have a child behaving that way book or not and I can't tell is the movie as freaky and bizarre as the trailer suggest?
@bitchyb73 Oscar decided to stop growing when he turned 3y old because he hated what was going on during this time in the world, or to be more precise in Nazi Germany. So, that would make him a midget of some sort.
In any case bitchyb73, your user name certainly reveals a lot about your state of mind.
@bitchyb73 Mentally he is an adult, he was born with a clairvoyant genious' mind. However, he retains the physical appearance of a child as he matures and is generally treated as one. What is the film (originally book) attempting to say with all of this, this is open to your interpretation...
@Fuminori What would you expect from a film made in the 70th, depicting a rather surreal life in east Germany (now Poland) during the Nazi era? Gotta be German.
I'm aware that this film was created in the 70s in Germany. It's like when someone says "That movie is so dated." and someone replies "Well yeah, it was made 50 years ago.."
So wasn't looking for an explanation lol But thanks?
Haha there was a huge controversy here in Oklahoma over this movie. It was available to rent in the public library and a bunch of people protested the movie's availability to the public due to some of the content.
