  • Johnny Rivers used to jam with Elvis at Graceland in the 60's. One night Elvis sang the tune "Memphis Tennessee" written by Chuck Berry and said he was going to record it since he lived in Memphis and felt like it was like his theme song. Well, Johnny beat Elvis to the punch, he quickly recorded and released it to the public before Elvis. Elvis was really pissed and said to his Memphis Mafia buddies "Don't ever let that Sonofabitch in here again!"

  • Fantastic !

  • Mind you, when I say "cop a feel" I don't necessarily mean her privates.....sometimes it was just holding her. That was cool too.

  • I was the biggest "walllflower geek" in high school you could imagine......and even I was able to cop a feel or two slow dancin' to this. Bless you Johnny Rivers

  • This is how music should be :)

  • best song of all-time?

  • @Jsanft Just quite possibly it is...

  • forgot how good this is

  • When nice soft music go to your heart through your ears and then it touches your soul and your imagination can not stop dreaming with pure authentic love, the kind of love that a soft touch of hands makes you breath even more nervous, then you realise love DOES exists as well as romantic people,it's just that we all use masks in this world, a silly game true romantic people do not follow...

  • Technically, my you teen years were in the 90's, but this is the music from my days!

  • We just celebrated our 52 anniversary. When this song came out it became our favorite and has been our song ever since. Still have the same feelings about Her now as I had then.

  • I had so forgotten about this song, til I heard it on the oldie's station the other day. Such a timeless classic.

  • A little girl came up to me when I was in my uniform one day (Army JROTC) And asked if we can slow dance and we danced to this lol. I made her day now time to slow dance with my gf to this

  • @SSFilms365 You should have said, "she made my day". There aren't many moments like that.

  • This song totally brings me back to seventh grade '78 roller skating with my boyfriend Kevin. He was such a sweetheart back then, very smart. We broke up cause my family moved to Cali. I sometime think about where he is today & how he is doing. I love, love this song, it's a beautiful love song! Thank you Johnny Rivers for such beautiful tune. I have downloaded this song to my ipod.

  • I have this 45, It's actually called "Slow Dancing". One of my all-time favorites.

  • April 14,1981, junior prom in Lebanon VA and slow dancing with Brenda Rasnake. The best night of my life. After 30 I still miss and love her so very much.

You only get one shot with a girl like her and I messed it up somehow, still not really sure why but it ended on Thursday November 12,1981 at 3:17pm.

  • @TheJer1963 Almost every man has one or two stories like yours. Keep your memories friend, those glorious moments will be alive forever there, we know. Girls have them too.

  • I was newly single then, man, this song really pulled on my heart strings, made a guy want a girl to dance with, forever!

  • A thousand years ago and all is lost to time except for memories and tears.

  • This played on the airwaves in the spring of '77. It reminds me of love not unrequited but unfulfilled which is why I'm playing this endlessly now having just rediscovered it. We did slow dance and sway, the lights were low but we were never alone......wonder what she's doing now.

  • this was my wedding song

  • To Michelle C. of Des Moines IA. - I Loved you so much in High school. I was "In" Love, you wanted to be just friends, and thats ok. '76 May seem like a long time ago in years, but to me it was this morning. I still love you, and always will. Not long now - cancer. But i'd given up this whole life without you to dance with with you to this song, just once. God I loved your hair, your perfume, even the jewelry you wore. Just once. Just held your hand... once.

  • @BHSR61 and cbargione .....that is so funny......I also had a Grand Prix!! One of those HUGE tank size one's! Lot's of college memories with that car. I kept it for years after college until my husband made me get rid of it because I didn't drive it anymore and "it was just taking up room in the carport"!! I put up a fuss though because I didn't want to!

  • Tell me something friends...am I going crazy, or has this age in which we reside? I just listened to this newest piece of garbage that is the rage among the kiddz..."Friday," and it was inane, zombie like noise compared to the beauty of this music to which we danced, and to which we found a sort of normal teenage existence in the seventies. Give me just 24 hours back in time, just 24 hours...

  • @jeff62rey It's the age in which we reside. This was music todays stuff is........as you say noise.

  • @jeff62rey you,re not crazy jeff;we,re still here listening to music from our time, back when a little idle time wasn,t against the law. oh yeah, if you,re gonna wish, wish big ,take a '71 chevelle or a'70 cuda with ya.

  • @thecelt1950 right said mate!

  • @jeff62rey I have a 14 year old niece who really likes the beatles, and has lots of old classics on her MP3. and she says that the modern stuff isn't very good compaired to the beatles music. So maybe there is hope

  • @musicman3557 hmmm yeah, i'm also a 14 years old and we have ALOT in common. especially the beatles. my classmates tease me about it but i just ignore them

  • @crisrea12345 they teased you for liking the Beatles???

Shame on them, if anything, I would have expected them to get teased for not liking the Beatles

  • @musicman3557 We HAVE to get her a job in A&R!

  • @burpo Thanks for your comment, but what is A&R

  • @musicman3557 A&R stands for Artists and Repertoire. They basically look for acts to sign to a particular label. They have other duties but I forget what they are.

  • pretty song

  • Simply one of the best records ever made.

  • Billboard's #49 song of '77. Johnny hit #8 AC, #10 pop. Johnny Duncan remade it as a country song with his own added commentary. God bless!

  • Buck62sugar -- it does bring a lot of that back. The tight satin shirts whoa. It's a wonderful, simple song that brings back our youth. Love it. JR has such a wonderful voice in these soft songs.

  • The best 7th grade dance love song of all time!

  • Hey, buck62sugar...what's so wrong with that? (smile) This song is simple and it is simply wonderful. Thank you, Mr. Johnny Rivers, and thank you, TheCinera for sharing.

  • @NY1love - Actually, yes. I suggested this to my ex for the first dance song at our wedding. She liked the song too and agreed. We always joked about having a Top 40 wedding! The relationship fell through and we never got married, but I remember this song and the good times we had.

  • This song brings back hot summer nights, when I was unaware that there is an end to things like those nights. The first slow dance was a few years off yet, wondering what that would be like. It eventually arrived, and it was as nearly as good as this song. God, music brings so much back doesn't it?

  • @vonsiems1963 bout to hold my girl tight (raising eyebrows slightly) you DOOOoooOOOOooOOOOoooooo know what i mean

  • One of his best. This song is one that moves you. You can feel it. It has so much meaning. I remember my Father playing this on a 45 and dancing with my Mother to it RIP both. I was thinking of them and this song came to mind so I sought it out here. Thanks to the poster. Brings back so many memories. They just don't make them like this anymore. I was 5 when I first remember hearing this.

  • Beautiful, smooth, sexy..makes you want to dance slowly with someone that you really love....You go Johnny......

  • Great song

  • One of Johnny's best.

  • if this song does not close the deal for you at the end of the night, then its not a deal. which means she just wants to be a friend. so if you are on your second or third date and she has not gave it up, then its not it. SONG IS IT.

  • @pakmanishere No doubt. If the lights are low and this song is on and nothing is happening then that's it. No dice.

  • @19881994for2 concordo plenamente....

  • CLASSICO MUITO BOM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Probably should be in the Rock N Roll HOF, though the criticism I suppose would

be that some of his biggest hits were covers, he has some great original hits too.

  • @17865329 See your point ,but definetly can't argue that johnny is the consemate performer that he is ! He does so much charity work for childrens' causes and for that he has my undivided respect !

  • This was the last song played at my 8th grade prom. I finally got enough courage to dance by then. i never forgot the song. It took me a little while to remember the girl though.
