Adama knew that he could have just left all of them there, they deserved to be left behind, yet he knew that if he didn't save them, all humanity would be lost.
If colonists had one Picard among them, there would be no Star Trek - 12 Colonies would "live long and prosper" until today. Well, they learned it the hard way...
thank christ! i am so sick of people putting some pathetic heavy metal NOISE over good clips! thank you!! any chance of posting pegasus saving galactica just after this scene? the soundtrack to that part was pretty cool too
What's cool about this is going FTL in an atmosphere. In the Star Trek and Star Wars universes they have to be clear of a gravity well to go to warp/hyperspace.
@roguelead72 I wouldn't say that they "have" to be clear of a gravity well, it's probably better for you if you do get clear before going to warp. That said, they did it in The Voyage Home with a bird of prey.
@roguelead72 This was explained in Star Trek at least. Warp technology in Star Trek works by folding the fabric of space. Entering warp inside an atmosphere would essentially destroy the planet.
@IndigoAK200 It was never really explained in the SW Universe, just that you can't go to lightspeed in a gravity well. In fact the Imperials built a ship to simulate gravity wells to either prevent ships from going to lightspeed or pull them out of it.
AnteyPL, Good point about the twin pulsar system, very good point. A thought, semi-related, as nervous as Voyager's crew likely was during that stunt...can you imagine what it would have been like to have been on the ground and seeing GALACTICA falling straight down towards you?? That's the stuff of nightmares.
Okay, I'll concede that The Picard Maneuver does require skill, excellent knowledge of starship functions, mechanics and such as well as being able to think really well on your feet...and as it's taught in the academy, that does buff up it's prestige. Also, he used it to annihilate an attacker with no quarter given...so, again points scored. But I still think The Adama Maneuver takes the gold for Best Pre-Planned Insanity Involving Use Of a Giant Starship. :-)
Certainly most spectacular ! But if we talk about real insanity, I think that Janeway's stroll with Voyager through twin pulsar system should also take credit.
Then there's the 'Adama Maneuver' which is straight outta the top ten list of Things You Should Never Do. Which is what makes it SO seriously awesome. :-)
@Lexican13 I dunno. The Picard Manoeuvre was taught in the Starfleet Academy, and I doubt anyone but Picard could pull it off. However, the Adama Manoeuvre is seriously more badass and I don't think that any Starfleet ships would be able to enter orbit like that. (I know the saucer of the Enterpise D did in Generations, but that was just the saucer, not the full ship) ;)
One of my buddies asked why do you like Battlestar so much? I showed him this video clip and 2 days later he got the box set. BSG makes a new fan every frakking day!
@macross25 when people asks me why i love so much this show mostly of times i recommend them to watch my 2 favourite episodes of the show, "resurrection ship" parts 1 and 2, even if they haven´t watch a single BSG episode. Then they realized this show is much much more than battles and spaceships (even when these elements are frakking amazing, by the way) and that is when they become fans!
THANK YOU!! Finally, it took 10+ minutes of lame searches to find this version without frackin music over it, it's great. Needed to hear the jump in air, not space.
Am I the only one who would think that the vipers would be snapped in half the moment they hit that severe windshear, and are slapped upwards as soon as they exited (pulling about 100G)? I mean, they are going from zero relative air flow, to some 200 knot upshear in a second! That is if they didn't get smacked up against the top of the exit hole! Lol i love this scene but this screams out at me. "All vipers down!"... "What? Ohh frack!". Tigh looks up, shakes his head; "Stupid frakkers.."
@TCoops I thought that too just now watching. I wondered why they didn't like... tilt to the side to let them out. lol. I can't tell though, are they really pushing the boosters at the end to make sure tehy get out? or is that just the fire formt he atmosphere engulfing them as they exit?
First things first. That was one of the most amazing maneuvers ever!
On the star trek thing, I believe later in the series(TNG:Nemesis) they don't need much forward movement to go to warp. I think it's similiar to the FTL a bit in that they go slip into "subspace". So like the Battlestar all the air around them would get sucked in, but it shouldn't destroy to much at the altitude.
Just my theory :P a hardcore trekkie could probably tell it better.
Crazy Bastard Adama... hehe That was probably one of the best things Ive ever seen on a sci-fi show just so unexpected, especially from adama... One thing about this show is it never ceases to amaze me how well they put everything togehter and make it work especially acting wise. The fights ar just extras which is the way it should be.
@jimmy1701 totally. Was a shame to see Caprica cancelled, I'm guessing due to lack of action.
One of the things I loved about this series was there was no technobabble plot devices to get them out of dangerous situations. If the FTL drive took 15 minutes to warm up, it took 15 minutes to warm up goddamn it.
@TheRealGrimRainbow yea also cus of buget issues and blood and crome being swapped from a movie to full tv show lol dont worry after its cansilation :D
Imagine looking up to the sky and seeing the Battlestar Galactica falling on your head, and on the last second it jumps. How would you feel?
That is one manoeuvre that other science fiction programs couldn't do without a FTL jump drive.
Excellent video.
Note: If that was Star Trek, and the Enterprise warped away at the last second, there would be no point, the warping away would have taken the city along with it. hehe!
would it though? i mean thats on the asumption that it must give some thrust behinde it- which true it has to do in order to recive the resultant force to push it forward. but would it really flatten a city- or would it just be like a jet flying overhead?
The thrust from the warp engines would push everything backwards, and when the vessel is moving forward, everything would move forward with it - Think of it like Matrix Reloaded where Neo is flying really fast, with all the vehicles trailing from behind - just like that.
Just after this arc, is when it went in the crapper IMO.
But this scene and the Ending of Season 1 Opera house was priceless.

IndigoAK200 6 months ago
@IndigoAK200 Star Trek warps by putting a "bubble" of space-time around itsself, making space "larger" behind it and "smaller" in front.
BSG just folds space around itself, flies through another dimension to travel lightyears in a matter of seconds, and pops back into our dimension.
