The Visual Effects, like the Gibson being all Tron/Matrix-y etc is supposed to be How they see their world. 'Artistic License' kinda crap. But still a fun Movie to watch. Cool Music.  But portraying the 'Hacking' is really showing just the idea of it: Taking over the TV station, Setting up an online add to mess with someone, etc. it's mostly BS compared to the real thing, but fun to watch.

Remember. Hackers is 80% bullshit, 15% exaggeration and 5% truth.

For this clip specifically: Impersonating/faking someone to get info (social engineering)is a very real strategy. Controlling what the TV station playsis also quite possible once you have access to the system.

Everything else is bullshit and special effects added because real hacking mostly involves screens of boring text.

@dardraa Also, the code he is asking for is the modem's dial out number, (back when you still had to use a phone line). Some companies printed out stickers in case the system crashed and a regular employee couldn't get IT help instantly, (at least Bell Atlantic did back in the day).

You can tell it's a fake dial out number by the use of the classic "555" as the prefix of the phone number ... classic Hollywood ....

There is no such thing as modern hackers.

The term hacker still means someone who is good with computers and programing someone who is able to fix things, reverse engineering or even cheat the hardware or the software.

What you are describing as hacking is CRACKING hacking is a term from 60's and it comes from the word hacksaw.

To learn how to crack you need to read one tutorial to learn how to hack you need 10+ years of experience.
