@Karatekidblackbelt1 You and I are on the same boat here. I am a 3 kyu brown belt (too young to get a black belt). Thanks to Hirokazu Kanazawa I dont have trouble with kata, but I always want to improve. I recently got 1st place in kumite and kata in a tournament! :D
I fully agree with you! I have a 3rd brown belt. This is enough for now since im only 12)) my dad said i better start training to get the black belt when im 14. By the way my tournament is in 6 days))))))
@mymyharlow I know it as the 'coob-eh-dot-chi' (dunno how to slell it) stance.. toes pointed inward while knees bent... I used to do this one as a kid. I beleaved it was only for exercise to make the legs stronger and to stretch. For balance I beleave front foot toes forward, back foot toes around a 45...
Basically, its the hourglass stance (sanchin dachi) - and yes, its to block off or protect the groin from attack. This is not a stance you'd really try to fight from; but it might help to think of it as a transitional stance. We stand on mats and hardwood floors nowadays, but 150 years ago, it was mud and uneven ground. Think about how body mechanics and application might be different under those conditions.
@rjt499b i have tried sanchin dachi over a small boat, it worked like a charm preventig me to fall to the sea. try it on a bus or subway! it gives you a nice balance.
This a well constructed form never seen nayone but my sensei ever try it but it is quite interesting. I doing bassai dai, tekki shodan, and jion all of which are amazing cant wait to attempt this later on.
jirotto, In all that time you think yo would have learned some respect and humility, instead you choose to make challenges to one of shotokans greatest masters, I also know you called him out in another post, and said you are a 12 degree master, What style? I know it's not shotokan, but you should post some video's of yourself so we can all learn from you. grow up and show some respect!
This hangetsu stance really conditions the legs and the kata is cool too. Just got finished with Basai Dai so I am not used to the slow movements yet. Pretty cool conditioning kata though. Train hard students.
Except that you can't learn how to fight doing kata alone in a park. Pad drills, sparring drills, and kumite requires partners; without those you're not doing Karate, you're just doing kata. Nothing wrong with that, but don't pretend it's something it's not.
Respecting someone who self-trains as much as someone who seeks the best instruction is a clear case of being so open-minded your brains fell out.
That stand to reason though they wouldnt get better as they got younger would they a bit like going to teh barbers and getting your "hair cut longer" .
I don't know who is "great" as you nor I have ever seen all of the "greats" of ages past. Look, spend your time on something constructive to get upset about. You think by somehow associating with him, what I said is a reflection upon your karate do. Life is too short. Walk your own path, and be your own man. You'll be happier in life!
There is a vast, vast difference between "respect" and "idol worship"! Mindless groveling doesn't advance one's knowledge, if hinders it. Look for the truth, since all of us are fallible. We admire the skill, but look for the deeper truths. That is karate do!
frankvanqueens>> hi there!! how sure you are that sensei kanazawa was regretfully failed for doing the version of this kata?? did sensei kanazawa told it to you face to face? just asking dude.. OSS!
I can not remember what the dachi in the beginning is called. My sensi is a 6th degree black belt and has met Kanazawa. He even had Kenneth Funiacoshi, Gichin Funiacoshi's great nephew, invite him to be on a national championship team with him.
I think it is called Hangetsudachi itself. The stance was probably named after the kata. one of the most painful stances ever. couldnt walk properly for a few days
I'm guessing this video was filmed in the 70's or 80's, Kanazawa does not look super old in this video, as he was born in 31 and he has to be graying in the hair by now.
I just researched and found this guy was a student of Funakoshi himself. These are probably the best kata videos you can get.
yes thanks seishan is an amazing kata. i thinkm it treaches you how to devellop the tanden power and breathing through that point. it has a very important element for improving your martial arts practise
yes , one of the ways to teach this kata, is to put resistance on the students hands as they perform the kata, then ask them to imagine the resistance for themselves
i dont know if you have heard of Charles Atlas ??, well, he took the ideas of the East, and called it Dynamic Tension and sold it to the world and made a fortune !!!!
Hangetsu (半月) (Japanese: "Half Moon") is an advanced kata practiced in Shotokan karate. It originates from the Naha-te school. The first part is executed slowly with strong breathing, stressing the development of the hara. This sequence shares a strong similarity with sanchin. The second part of the kata is more dynamic in its execution.
I am far from been a knowledgeble person in Traditional Karate, I just love learning it and it does a lot for me. I also have started to learn BJJ.I rely on my Shihan to give me the understanding.Shihan Gluciana 7thDAN Trained in Japan under Abe sensei and Kancho Kanazawa.
The beauty of Shotokan Karate is that they keep their traditional KATA'S attracts people who appreciates strong traditional style. It is not for every one.
If for traditional you understand Funakoshi's versions, then you are right. According to Bruce Clayton, Funakoshi did some changes to traditional shorin ryu kata, which were modified versions of Chinese kata (see Clayton, Bruce D. "Shotokan's Secret").
It is my contention that Kata in many cases was simplified to a middleground in order to disguise variations in technique.
Mediation (mediating action) on Kata Hangetsu, has brought me much insight to the purpous the Shuri Castle Bodygaurds. Even if spied upon they may have had a vast repritoire of hidden technique. This is only the opinion of a Shotokan Martialist. Hangetsu could be strongest example of this.
The mustyness of tradition over the centuries has caused this kata to become less relevant. Form should be updated by some forward-thinking master. See some of the TaeKwonDo poomse for example.
I doubt you have enough knowledge of this kata to make such a statement. But if you do, I would like to read your reasons. I also would like to know in what sense TKD forms are better than Kanazawa sensei's kata.
Are you talking about the ITF or the WTF forms? Did you known that the the "Father of Modern" Tae Known Do, General Choi was a Nidan (second degree) balck belt under Gichin Funakoshi. Furhtermore, the founder of the original Kwans were all Japanese Karate pratictioners. The form of the ITF resemble the for of Shotokan, Shito Ryu or Wado Ryu. The WTF form are even less dynamic, more erect and less fuild that Shotokan karate.
Dear student. Koreans were subjugated to the Japs and treated inhumanely. Like the Chinese they were brutalized. The Koreans originally called it Tang Soo Do, "Art of the hands of Tang", Re:China. It was later changed for Korean chavanism to TKD. Kanazawa never trained under Funakoshi, but Nakayama. The kata can never be practiced correctly as JKA never stressed breathing, nor did the instructor Funakoshi. It is an imitation of Goju ryu's version. Kanazawa tried, but regretfully failed to do it.
Sensei Kanazawa studied under Funikoshi AND Nakayama. Please check your research. Kanazawa is under the SKIF, not the JKA, after leaving the JKA to start it. If you study under the SKIF, this is indeed the correct way to practice the kata, the way they teach it. If you study JKA it is probably slightly different. There are always differences, that doesn't make them bad. Have respect for an amazing karate-ka, regardless of his differences between the way you practice it and the way he does.
Did you know that Sensei Kanazawa when young had entered in a kumite competition. but before the the tournament began, he had fractured his hand (not in a a fight, but an accident). his parents had come to watch the tournament. Sensei Kanazawa, not wanting to dissapoint them, won the entire tournament with a broken arm. TALK ABOUT AN AMAZING KARATE- KA!!!
