They're both good franchises and characters. This doesn't mean Sonic and Friends couldn't take out Mario and Friends in a milisecond if they wanted to. Shadow alone could do that. We never see Mario"go super". Mario doesn't have a title like the fastest thing alive or the ultimate lifeform. Yes, Sonic is far superior, but Mario isn't bad.

Yeah, Sonic's awesome. I don't know why Mario is the most recognizable video game character! He's awesome and all but why? Sonic has the better setting and looks in thte games! Take Unlerashed for example, it's got the fastest gamplay of any game i've seen and it's best Sonic game but nobody is making a fuss about it. Super Mario Galalxy isn't that great (I have it) but people really like it for some reason. Why don' people like Sonic? He is waaayyy better than a frickin plumber!!!

Mario is more reconizable than Sonic purly because of time advantage. As a character Mario has been around 10 years before Sonic has, and before video games were popular. His games really took the world by storm so he was able to get a lot of fans in the 80s and his popularity only grew over the past 28 years to what it is today.

So anyway as a character Mario has had a 10 year head start over Sonic so it's easy to see why Mario's popularity is so much superior to Sonic's, but I really don't care, I will always love the Sonic franchise much more than the Mario franchise.

So Sonic at one point was more popular than mario until 2006 when Sonic games went downhill. However, we can still hope that Sonic the Hedgehog4 (sequal to sonic and knuckles coming out to xbox live marketplace sometime this summer) will bring Sonic back to his old fast self.
