Funny how differently people perceive things. I thought he was being very playful and the audience was responding with joyful laughter. I found no disrespect. I don't think even a Western audience would go to such a concert with these extraordinary musicians without knowing what they were getting into. And their enthusiastic response seemed to prove they knew, and felt, the total amazingness of the music.
Such a shame! A laughing audience? Blasphemous to say the least.! Perhaps such masters should decline to paly in front of such un -discerning audiences.....its more meaningful to play in front of a bunch of kindergarten kids.Believe me they are a tad more genuine!
I was lucky enough to be a (western) musician with the opportunity to play with some top-notch musicians in my time, and all I can tell you is that sometimes when things get really good, it is so amazing that it will just make you laugh. I doubt that he takes himself as seriously as some of his admirers do, but I can see how one might be offended by what could be interpreted as a show of disrespect. Oh, and I like the slow parts as much as the fast parts.
@Licensetokill29 people usually respond with laughing when they are nervous or out of their depth. What a loss for such a master to perform in front of such an uninformed audience...You can so tell that this is a western audience, they only respond to the fast passages...
@Licensetokill29 well the reason the audience is laughing cause they dont have an ability to understand these raags...i challenge them if they can come on a stage and perform at least try to perform like him...!!!
these peoples looks useless and don't have any sense to whom they are listening. really annoying sound disturbing this Legend's rhythm when he is doing riyaz...still Legend managed to ignore those useless fellas :)
You just don't understand WESTERN culture. Zakir WANTED them to laugh. He laughed too - he was making a little 'fun with Western classical music and it's association with the "Lone Ranger." So relax. It's all cool!
@rillloudmother they aren't laughing to express meanness. Listen to the applause. Listen to the hushed silence that overcomes the crowd throughout the performance. They are listening. The laughter is an expression of joy :)
@rillloudmother well I understand that they may not know about konakol, so it could be taken as immature and ignorant to laugh. However, going as far as calling them retarded is a little harsh imho. Now, if they were booing, that would be very moronic and inappropriate.
hate it how people hoot and cheer like that - like you just can't help putting in your own two cents when someone does something you like - someone should study why we do that... or why we feel compelled to leave a comment :)
@filthyunknown I think that in the presence of such great players and great music, we can be made to feel like children. And as children we are free to laugh and hoot and giggle as we please and not be ashamed of ourselves. That's the sign of something truly great; it frees us. Even if it's just for an evening :)

As a musician i feel Ustad should choose his audiences more carefully, and perhaps use genuine stuff ,and far less gimicry perhaps....

@Giveupthegh0st I hope you are correct, but it is still annoying to have them laugh over his playing. especially while he is doing konakol.

@Giveupthegh0st Well I find it harsh that they would laugh during his konakol, so I feel "retarded" it is warranted.
