  • A different take on ANYTIME. I like it!!! Great job Robert!!! I'm gonna sing your version of it sometime with my band.

  • This is pretty cool!

  • my new band...THE SKY...the sky official.com

  • I really like Robert's voice. He has an incredible range!!!

  • If that is Steve standing over in the wings to take over, then click like!

  • what a screamer....love it. why didn't this song end up on an album? man I wish Robert had put out more stuff, love his voice and energy.

  • @coldistheshoulder This song is on the "Infinity" album.

  • @rosskolnikov what an incredible range!!!

  • I see why they were going to loose thier label, Good for them to have Steve Perry join , I dont belive that Gregg hated Steve sounds like b/s ...dont make the claim If you dont know!

  • Gregg sings this better with Steve...jmo

  • Bob Fleischman was really whippin these boys into shape.

Too bad he didn't get to stick around.

  • Neal's looking looked very very awful and strange.. Like wine, his appearance was getting better by ages. He is even more handsome now in 2010 than in this video..

  • I wonder if Robert can still hit the high notes like this and in Vinnie VIncent Invasion.

  • what a bad-axx mullet!

  • ja ja ja the song kicks ass

  • This song should definitely be on Journey's greatest hits album (with Robert Fleischman on lead vocals). It is amazing.

  • @theelevan1 It is on their greatest hits album called "The Essential Journey".

  • I say this because it seems that the one constant in Journey since Rollie left and Perry joined is that Schon and Cain have maintained their friendship and their professional working relationship. If you believe what's been written in some corners, Rollie hated Perry and once Perry was gone, he sniffed around a few times to see about getting back in the band and Schon and Cain always rebuffed him. That, to me, is the most telling thing about the band's history.

  • @williamjpellas0314

Actually that's not correct in terms of Rolie returning, he has been offered the opportunity several times but has declined as of now. I actually would like to it happen as vocally Cain cannot hold a candle to Greg and it would give them the opportunity to play songs that featured Greg on co-lead vocals that actually sound good. Rolie was never much more than B3, keys with some synth here and there so there would still be plenty of room for both he and Cain.

  • @TheTN24 he has been offered to return.....where did you read about this at?

  • I think several other comments in this thread nailed it. Fleischman definitely had pipes and the version of Journey with him as lead singer definitely rocked. But to me the larger difference was not Fleischman to Perry but rather Gregg Rollie to Jonathan Cain. Rollie, to me, was more of an old school rock or even jazz-fusion keyboardist, where Cain was classically trained with pop leanings. Cain has obviously gotten along well with Schon, too, and I don't know that Rollie always did.

  • Robert Fleischman resurfaced in 1986 as the lead singer on Vinnie Vincent's Invasion album

  • This guy has a proto-mullet going. Great singer though, he sounds kinda like David Byron from Uriah Heep.

  • he shoulda stayed in vinnie vincent invasion

  • he invented the wheel in the sky ja ja ja

  • didn`t this guy sing in Final Warning.

  • Robert cowrote this and feeling that way.

  • i wonder why he left he was really good , perry is still number one for me but this guy has real talent.

  • @JSpbc180 he couldn't deal with neils ego which is as big as his fro.

  • @tavspop Actually, Neil loved Robert Fleischman.

In fact, he and Bob worked for awhile together on the Arrival CD (2002).

  • Robert looks like Frank Dimino of Angel.

  • Robert had a band called Wolfgang in the early seventies, they recorded at Paramount and it is amazing. One of their songs..."Make It" was reworked and that became "Wheel in the Sky".

  • Very cool to see. Not bad at all. Still love Steve though even though he won't return. Wonder if they ever asked Robert to come back?

  • @SoCo1972 They should have asked Robert to come back after Steve bailed in 1998.

Instead, since then they have gone with Perry impersonators.

  • Robert Fleischman is the FUCKIN MAN!

  • Come on people Jesus-It was 1977 And I think he was decent singer for that period and these recordings are not 1/2 bad either yes it is different from perry and the others that follow the point is its all good, why compare different singers?

  • I've followed Journey for a long time and did not know this guy ever sang for them. Waht happened to him? Did he have a falling out with the rest of the band or what? Does a pretty good job.

  • @1danrobbins Robert Fleischman was also the vocalist on the first Vinnie Vincent Invasion cd.

  • Fleischman has an email address on his website where u can contact him.

  • Wrong. With Cain, the band rose to superstar status. Nobody beats Steve Smith on drums either.

  • one of my fav. songs from journey. don't really care who song it. the really old journey rock'd. and the famous material with perry's voice was amazin'.

  • I BELIEVE FLEISHMAN PASSED AWAY

  • @franklaguna Nope, still alive as of 2010.

  • is he german?

  • Why not just hire back Robert Fleishman to the band? He's the essence of both the old Journey and the NEW Journey!

  • I heard Fleischman on VV Invasion and the way he screams, he does that Bon Scott thing! When he sings normal like this, he really has those pipes! I wish he'd have come back to replace Augeri when Augeri left Journey instead of JSS!

  • i'm gonby dammit

  • did he sing the song something moved with vinnie vincent invasion??

  • Something Moved was an Ace Frehley song. So no.

  • Only reason I can come up with for their having gone with Steve Perry is that he wrote those lame, 80s arena rock anthems that made them zillionaires. I've never heard this edition b4 and am groping for an explanation why RF didn't stick (unless he left on his own accord). It's no upgrade in the lead singer/frontman dept 2 switch to the less physically attractive Perry + you'd think having a frontman who does NOT remind you of a girl would b a plus. BUT, they made a fortune so who am I to say?

  • LESS PHYSICALLY ATTRACTIVE PERRY REMINDS YOU OF A GIRL????

lol, get a life and new eyes and ears!!!!

  • @dantean yea,its s good thing journey didnt follow you train of thought.cause they would be broke

  • When you boil it all down, Robert is a better singer than the other guy. He has better rock phrasing and a better rock sensibility. (Listen to the bridge part starting at 1:57.) I was at this show. My band played on the local stage and we were able to see Journey and Styx. Journey, by far, was the best band of the day.

  • There you are.....and you look simply marvalous ! ! !

  • People...

    This - "IS" - Robert Fleishchman's Tube.

He lives in Virginia ... He has a band... It's called The Sky... He is still singing, and, performing, and recording. You can buy his music. He has a My Space...

    :))).

  • oops... Fleischman - typo

  • It's a shame that we never hear anything from him anymore, he was one hell of a singer. I love his work with Vinnie Vincent.

  • Again, truly amazing footage. I had read and heard about Robert for years and years, but never got a chance to actually hear him. He sounds excellent here. Much more of a rock 'n' roll swagger than Perry, very Coverdale-ish. Great stuff indeed.

  • He's on the Time 3 box set in the song "For You."

  • robert seemed a little more rock n roll.

  • Wow! How did you get this? That is so classic! Cool! Was this concert in Hawaii?

  • You can dl on many file sharing programs...the whole concert....called Journey Diamond Head Crater

  • I'm pretty sure he got this because he is the guy singing in this video. LOL

Robert was great with Journey, still is great today!

  • I agree with TexasRokker...

Robert Fleischman isn't a bad vocalist, but it's obvious that he and Steve Perry have 2 completely different styles. Steve has more control and subtlety to his delivery, and Robert seems to just belt everything out, coming close to overpowering the songs in a way. Just a matter of taste I suppose...

  • @PaintManBR Yeah... It seems Robert is trying to speed up a slow song.

  • @lagnaf007 I think the tape is running a bit slow. The Beatles in Budokan is another example of this

  • @lagnaf007 Well that is true but he wrote the song with Rolie.

  • Guys, Steve had one freakin' line in this song...

Everyone saying "Steve's version" was better or worse than this version doesn't know what they're talking about. Comparing Gregg Rolie vs Fleischman would make sense...

  • Actually this version is pretty good.. i like it dang all the Journey vocalist has a superb voice all of them start to Fleischman, perry, auguerie, sotto, pineda

Journey is the best band in the world!!.

  • I think if this guy (Robert F.) stays with Journey for a very long time & the label didnt screw up the band...maybe Journey will be a heavy progressive rock.

  • this is superior to the Perry version, by millions of miles.

  • steve was still better,

  • Long time Journey/Greg rollie fan here...Sounds good...post more!

  • este es el cantante de vinnie vincent invasion??'?????

  • I think Neal should grow the fro back!

  • Ha Ha Ha - Big Hair Detroit Rock City Neal Schon --- MTV sexy 1980's

  • robert was sporting the mullet years before it becmae popular - this footage rocks - thanks for the post

  • 67cabman: IDIOT! Mother FUCKER! Where are you now, WINNER!wahwahwah!!

  • What a voice. I wish the lost VV album would really come out.

  • I like Robert's vocals better than Steve Perry's. He's got a fuller voice, and can handle the lower range stuff brilliantly. Steve Perry may have been the right guy for the band commercially, but Fleishman was a better singer and would have kept the band closer to the Rock side than Perry did.

  • Abso-fucking-lutely! Not to take away from Perry, as he was a great singer, but he's a crooner like Nat King Cole and Perry Como. Not a rocker like Fleischman who is more like Plant or Daltrey. Perry turned a great rock band into a pop band. Bringing Cain on board facilitated it as well.

  • Why did he split with Vinnie Vincent Invasion? I thought his vocal stylings were far superior to Mark Slaughter.

  • He was forced out by the label. He didn't want to leave, nor did Vinnie want him replaced. Bad move, as Slaughter is a gawd awful vocalist. It killed the band.

  • Robert was incredible on Vinnie Vincent's first CD!!

  • Great job, Robert! I have a low-quality boot of his show, so better audio plus video is a real treat. Interesting to see that the plan was not to have Gregg Rolie sing at all - Robert does a great job of covering both low and high. (If this is Robert, thanks for coming to see my band at the Derby in '03)

  • Journey didn't have album with Robert? But they went to tour?Oh wait they were doing an openning here for somebody.Steve sing it better with feelings, though Robert is good, its just that I can't connect with him.But for Perry I just melt.

  • with the right singers WOW. this is the best version of Anytime i've heard so far

  • That spandex's pretty tight. lol!

  • Sings okay, but cant clap his hands for shit. LOL

  • bob was too LOOK-AT-ME but can sing right on key

    steeve was god

now arnel can roxx i love the ending of this live version

  • I like Steve's version.

But OMG' I never knew that "Anytime" can be this soooooooooo gooooooooood!

    You're the man!

  • LMFAO@ Steve Perry being the total package... listen to this guys pipes! This was THE classic lineup before they went total poo poo commercial.

  • why were they commercial? b/c they became successful?

  • At least at this time they still sounded like the original band and had Ansley on the drums (huge difference in the rhythm section). At this point they were already successful musicians (Ex Santana, Steve Miller Band, Frank Zappa, Bowie) who decided to go commerical....

  • Thank god they found Steve Perry, this guy can sing, but Steve was the total package!

Neal needed big hair because he is only 5ft tall.

  • Total package to sell out, yeah. Add the producer from Queen and a willingness to kill the band for a top 40 hit and you have "Journey Version 3". Top 40 here we come. Now we just need to rhyme " Cit'tay with Bay" Oh ya that rocks.... sad

  • Where's his whip from the back of the Vinnie Vincent Invasion album ?

  • Yeah that whip was pretty cool.

  • Neal's hair...lol!!!

  • perry did it this song better.but i give this guy his props

  • Yeah, I still prefer Greg Rollie on the lead vocal...

  • I buried Paul.

    Rollie did rock.

  • But I also dig Fleischman's screaming high notes in this version. Gotta love when he notices that lady off to the side of the stage at 2:54.

  • so do I...

  • FANTASTIC!!!

  • screw perry this is the real deal

  • wait, wasn't this with gregg rolie and steve perry??? i thought this song came out in 1978..hmmm i need answers.

  • Robert co-wrote this song, "Winds of March" and "Wheel in the Sky" w/ other band members. Those all ended up on Infinity w/ Steve Perry singing. Check the CD, record, or tape where the song credits R listed

  • Didn't rolie and perry duet this song? why didn't rob and rolie duet...?

I like Perry better...I love Perry!!! he's a more versatile and stronger singer. and his vocals are just so destinctive..and emotional..Rob is good, but Perry is unforgettable and leaves you with chills..

  • this is pretty awesome.

  • I haveth z Vinnie Vincent Invasion with Robert Fleischman on vocals.

    Great album.

  • This is amazing, never seen journey with Fleischman, what a treat, this is why I love u-tube

  • TWISTEEEEEEEEEEEED F"N ROCKS

  • I have Roberts 79' Perfect Stranger studio transferred onto CD... its simply 8 enjoyable songs to the core. totally love it. All for you in on there.

  • another WTF moment...another band another time.

  • Check out Robert's new album LOOK AT THE DREAM. I saw his new band in Las Vegas and they were smoking hot.

  • One of the greatest rock songs ever written. Thanks for the lifetime of chills. Love the slightly-slower feel...dude WAILS. Thanks!

  • this is awesome. that is all.

  • OMG!!! This needs to be seen by more people. WOW!

  • OMG! You dont come across this everyday, Journey when they had Fleishman singing.

  • Wow - very cool to see this. Thanks for posting.

  • A lot of you guys just don't get it. If it weren't for Robert these guys would have been fired from the label back in the 70's. To compare Robert, Perry, Augeri & Soto is just idiotic because they are apples & oranges. If this band would have some good songwriting today they wouldn't have to keep alive as the karaoke band that they are. A band with any merit can keep up with the times and continue to produce hit music. They should be ashamed of themselves.

  • What?

  • I've waited for many years to finally see & hear some live footage of Journey with Robert Fleischman! He's a great vocalist, so this is a real pleasure.

  • Very rare video! Anymore like this?

  • Let's be fair....Journey's early stuff was far more progressive, so adding Robert definitely did something for them as far as songwriting direction goes, and at that point in time, Robert was a step up for them. Things certainly worked out fine for Journey when they added Perry, but you have to give some credit to Robert for helping them transition from progressive to more commercial.

  • Yeah. They opened up for ELP when Robert was their singer

  • Yes, it's true - I was there (at the SF Cow Palace show)! Fleischman was an absolutely AMAZING performer! He could connect with the crowd like no other lead vocalist I've ever seen - he did acrobatics onstage, often leaping back to his feet from sitting on the edge of the stage during a Schon solo!! INCREDIBLE!!

  • Any true Journey fan can hear Robert Fleischman was not right for the band which is why Herbie Herbert got rid of him. Not too many singers have Steve Perry's range. His voice and range are phenomenal.

  • aw, yea but you still gotta give robert his props

  • Thank you for adding this video. After the Infinity album, I lost most interest in Journey. Love Neil Schon here. Yes, I agree that Journey lost a soul member of their group after Robert left the band. I always wondered if it was a riff between Robert and Steve. If there was, I have indeed lost some respect for Steve Perry. Journey is one of my all time favorite rock groups. This song and Feeling That Way are a sweet part of classic rock music history.

  • Robert leave for a band with more future to offer! Who knows ? In 77 just a few crazy men will put money in this Band... they recorded 3 LP without much success & the punks were just waitin' in the corner to destroy everything...The 70s album with Perry were allright... When Rolie quit their sound became even more commercial & overproduced... they became 100 % a band for lonely teengirls...Sure that a poster of Perry was in their bedrooms...

  • I agree, after Rolie left, the band was not the same. It is a shame that alot of people are unfamiliar with the band's 1st 3 albums. Those albums are underrated. I wished that they could have become successful with those albums. It was about the music and nothing else.

  • Look Into the Future was a great album. Rolie is unique. He is still one of my favorite lead singers from Santana. What ever happen to him?

  • it was still about the music when perry joined, just a little different style of music that's all

  • The earliest fans of Journey should note that even before Robert Fleischman was hired as their lead vocalist, the original was their guitarist Gregg Rolie. It was when Journey first grouped together that they had a more progressive-rock sound, much like Boston. When Steve Perry was hired and Fleischman was dropped the band took on a pop sound but never lost their loyal fanbase. Journey today has gone through so many personnel changes but continues to kick ass!!!

  • The earliest of Journey fans should also note that Gregg Rolie was their pianist/organist and not their guitarist.

  • HAHA, thanks for correcting me on that one. What the hell was I thinking?? I meant to say keyboardist/organist.

  • Boston!? Are ya kidding!? Boston good, yes. Progressive, no. Early Journey, early Styx, early Kansas, Lift and Starcastle were great USA choice prog

  • I'm with you bobquem. The incredible stage presence of Steve Perry was apparent very early on. And there is no denying his incredible vocal talents. Fleischman isn't bad, he's just not Perry.

  • No, Fleischman isn't Perry but he doesn't need to be.

Robert is a force all of his own. His vocal range far exceeds Perry. Perry was a one trick pony. The super high vocal range sounded great, but Fleischman can do the lows, the middle, up there, round the sides, etc.

I respect your opinion and I think that Perry was very talented, but my 2 cents? Fleischman was better by leaps and bounds. This is a 1977 live video. How well do you expect vocal mix to be? Journey just got started with Robert.

  • Perry was a one trick pony?? You're funny!!! LOL If Robert was so much better, why didn't they keep him??

  • That's the music business for you.

  • Ok, well you just keep on loving Perry and I'll keep on admiring Fleischman. Peace.

  • I don't like Robert's stage presence nor his vocals. His vocals don't mix nearly as well with Greg's as Steve's did. Steve brought something to the chemistry of the existing band that turned some damn fine wine into some spectacular champagne.

  • Wow. They smoked! This is proof positive that Schon,Rollie,Vallory, and Dunbar had some serious chemistry with Fleischman. Had this combo worked out, It would have been interesting to see what they could have done.

  • Come to my house in Missoula, Montana "ANYTIME"!

I would like to bite that nose. I have some old Channel albums and have seen a recent pic of Robert at yahoo groups. He's like Dick Clark, he just doesn't age! ...Sabrina Brock

  • I would say that Fleischman is to be praised.

Herbie Herbert gave Robert the shaft, Herbie admits it in his interviews. Neither Fleischman or Journey is to blame. The only blame here is piss poor management back in the 1970s and a lazy media.

Fleischman songs got me and my hubby together. I have no problems with Journey's first!

  • Great bit of Journey history here. Fleischman clearly lays the foundation that Perry comes in later to build on. A sharp left turn for a band who was, up to that point, cast largely in the prog/fusion vein. If Fleischman was the one who was responsible for reinventing Journey, deserved credit is long overdue. But is he to be blamed or praised?

  • There were some added perks in this version. Greg Rolie and Steve Perry did an excellent job with this song that Robert originally does here, but after Robert left, something was simply lost in the translation.

  • I have to disagree. I think the Rollie / Perry version is much stronger. This version is good, but it has a lot of fluff, and it doesn't feel polished. The mix of vocals on the album (and particularly on Captured) are better IMHO.

  • The Rollie/Perry version is very crisp.
