  • PHIL: 1:17

  • Why did they only play this 5 times? crazy decision

  • Saw them do this at the Music Hall in Boston in June '76...wonderful...one of many Dead moments never to be forgotten

  • Not a one dislike,,20,000!!!!!! No dislikes!!! Not that I really care about "likes" or "dislikes",I'm too old for that shit. I'm just sayin, 20,000,nadda one dislike

  • The quintessential GD version, but I still prefer the JGB (with Keith and Donna) renditions. Keith's contribution (no slight to Nicky Hopkins) is enormous, but Donna had much less trouble staying in key without Bobby 'harmonizing' .

  • Good Vibration!

  • Cant stop listening to this song. Cant forget I was once a homeless junkie scorin one n ones in the mission, man I love this song.

  • No worry's brother....It was a trip when I finally fugured out Bertha, as did we all,

To think it was all just a dream they had one afternoon........

  • This runs so deep for us junkies....

    God bless you Jer...

  • you know im ready to give everything

  • Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for that.

  • I was at this show. Mickey, Keith and Donna were all there. I saw them with my own eyes and heard them with my own ears. There is no question who played with the band that night And a fine show it was at that.

    0 dislikes.

Not even surprised because this song is so perfect.

  • One of my all-time favorite Jerry performances. Top Shelf!

  • Snoot, you sure bro? Sounds right to me. That's Donna Jean singing too. My fave years are with her.

  • Really like the Murals and the Art.

  • There's no place like Home...

  • goosebumps every time

  • Used to have this on tape. It was one of my better Dead bootlegs. Notable for this Mission but also a rare 2nd set Candyman. Sick !!

  • Ya that sounds like Keith plus Mickey was out till late '77

  • @bakpakr75

nope. Mickey sat in with the band second set at the last show pre-hiatus 10/20/74 and rejoined in '75.

  • and 6-4-76;).

  • The GD played Mission on...6-10-76, 6-12-76, 6-18-76, and 6-29-76:).

  • I also have the Kean College CD, which I feel is the best version I've heard so far.

  • I also like the version on The Jerry Garcia Band "After Midnight" CD at Kean College from 2-28-80.

  • klassik....non overplayed song!!!!

  • with alot of songs its stretching it to say " best version ever " . but when it comes to this version of mission in the rain. i just may have to say ----" best version EVER "

  • @ncbloom - not even close!

  • @pbl1 whats your favorite version ??? jgb santa cru z 83 ? i love that version too. please let me know some shows to check out. i'm always on the hunt for some sweet missions.

  • @pbl1 please elaborate on some sweet version of mission in the rain. i'm very interested in other exemplary versions. one love

  • @ncbloom - don't know date, and not sure if its Dead or JGB (prob JGB). I only know its pre-summer 1980, which is when i heard the version. Very up tempo, with killer leads. Might, ironically, be Kean College from 2-28-80, because folks who gave me mix with MITR were attending Kean at the time.

in any event, its much more interesting than this version.

  • @pbl1 The Dead never to my knowledge did Mission in the Rain even once. It's a JGB tune plain and simple. Plus listen to the band, do you hear Phil? Do you hear two drummers? I don't.

  • @Snootwaller 06/04/76- Paramount Theater - Portland, OR

06/10/76- Boston Music Hall - Boston, MA

06/12/76- Boston Music Hall - Boston, MA

06/18/76- Capitol Theater - Passaic, NJ

06/29/76- Auditorium Theater - Chicago, IL

  • @Snootwaller -Thank god we don't have to rely on your ears, knowledge, opinion or memory. This is all documented in Deadbase, plain and simple.

  • There's no place like home.....

  • from l.s.d.

  • Jerry sings straight to the soul

    Dead Forever!

  • this one was only played like three or four times by the dead all in june of 1976. Too bad. check out the boston music hall tape from june 12th.

  • 5 times

  • this was one of my very first tapes and always one of my favorites. one of those ones were every note is familiar and kinda perfect.

  • mmm mmm mmm.

  • this was the first tape i ever had with mission on it when i was a kid. i'd been listening to this song for years before i finally got to the mission. when ever i'm in san fran i feel like jerry's ghost is on every corner.or maybe its the ghost of another time?..... i remember coming out of the warfield one rainy night "watch out for the puddles" the old heads said. thanks for posting this

  • sweet sweet tune i miss jerry

  • There IS some satisfaction on a Saturday in the San Francisco rain!

  • rainy murals... am i hallucinating? silly question

  • no matter what comes down, the mission always looks the same...

Although it was never exactly clear who or what this song is about (David Dodd has some good info), it's fucking beautiful...

  • Thanks for posting this and for using beautful imagery from the Mission District

  • Yaaaaaaaaay

  • The Grateful Dead only did Mission about 5 or 6 times I believe, although it was a JGB staple. too bad, it is in my top 5 fav Jerry songs!

  • Correct - Jerry played it with GD a total of 5 times during June '76. This Chicago performance was the last time with GD.
