    Tyner is a top 10, if not top 5 jazz pianist. Trucks is on track to be a top 10 guitarist as he grows...and I'm talking all-time here.

    DTB plays greensleeves all the time, and derek trucks could make a cigar box strung with rubber bands sound good... I shall be purchasing this album.. MCCOY TYNER IS A SUPER BADASS!

  • Derek has shown consistently that he has incredible dynamic control. He can make profound musical statements at nearly any volume. I'd say the "singing" quality of his overdriven tone when he pushes the amp wide open is definitely the sound most people know him for, and therefore many are put off by this recording, where he never really pushes it into that more saturated sound... different does not equal worse...

  • I think Derek probably played waht he wanted too. He could have played his amp in the studio as loud as he wanted by simply putting it in another room. I'm thinking he just decided that understated is the way to go with McCoy Tyner, shows real humility for sure

  • i think whats bugging alot of hard core derek fans is that it sounds like he turned the reverb on his legendary blackface all the way down. An unusual move which takes away from the usual derek fretted/unfretted howl. Amazing Nontheless!!!

  • at its best moments, the jazz behind it sounds out of place. Don't care for this as much as i hoped to. Though, i give any . GUITAR PLAYER . lots of respect to stand in with coltrane's piano man and try and do anything. ...boy i wish coltrane was around. miss him. there's just this big empty void where he used to be.

  • Derek definitely isn't playing straight ahead jazz by any means, but he has an insanely soft touch for a blues player.

    It's definitely a blues solo, but if you listen closely you will hear the Wes licks thrown in there.

    Not to mention the melody is played gorgeously. I think its a fantastic rendition. But again, I'm not looking at it as pure jazz.

  • Agreeing with rsw, I think trucks is out of his league here. Derek is not a straight jazz player. He could get away with being a jazz player in a blues setting. Not the same.

    I'd take Coltrane's version over this one.

  • Admittedly I haven't heard enough of Trucks to render an opinion but this is not a good introduction to him as a player. He's way, way out of his league here as many players would be next to McCoy.

  • I completely agree. McCoy Tyner is musically at a different level. I'm, btw, a huge Derek Trucks fan (I love blues and jazz), so I'm also a fan of Tyner and his work with Coltrane. I must say though, Derek was not on it during this recording.

  • derek plays very reserved here. he's almost too respectful and it hurts the track. derek has torn up greensleeves for years with his band and it is completely raw and filled with emotion. this track is almost staid.

  • they could have found a way to let derek record through a lot more power. it seems like derek's discouraged by his lack of volume and that's what makes him more reserved. i'm sure theres plenty of things they could have done to get the sound they wanted without just turning the volume on the amp way way down. instead he was stuck in the middle, doing a super mellow version when he's used to ripping the song up

  • IMHO, in addition to that, its the jazz music setting that restrains Derek the most. Blues players playing jazz music can be a nervous experience as the intracacies and particularly the chord changes can be difficult hurdles.

  • blah: i certainly don't think dt has or had any difficulty navigating the changes to greensleeves. especially since its a modal tune.

    also,i think to label derek a blues player is kinda off.the blues is just a part of derek.he plays so many other styles so fluently he really can't be labeled.

    i'm sure if anything he was just a little nervous recording with 3 of his idols. plus..as the only electric instrument, he had to keep his amp vol really low.sounds like 3 or 4.he couldn't get his sound.

  • yes thats true especially someone with great touch like derek...but what i meant was derek turns his super up to around 8 live...

    and that gives him his trademark tone..

    which he isn't getting here because it would have been way too loud.

  • There are no chord changes in this tune. Its competely modal - its bounces in between two chords the entire time. In that way, its LESS complicated than standard blues form. Except for the theme (melody) at the beginning and end.

    to be honest, i cant believe i said that because i own several of his cds where he experiments with indian rhythms and stylings.
