Scott had the most powerful voice in his era and beyond. While great singers, Tom Jones, Engelbert, Jay Black all are a slight notch below in vocal range, clarity and depth. Scott did not have the consistent arrangements, of the others, nor did he choose to leave the melancholy themes. While a couple of songs like this, Make It Easy on Yourself, In My Room, After the Lights Go Out are great, the remainder tail off considerably.
John married Kathy Young shortly after arriving in the UK. I'm sure that wedding band kept him from being the 'teen heartthrob' that Scott was. Short lived marriage. 65-68...then again...with all that sky rocket fame....how could a 22 year old and a 20 year old couple survive that?
I was only 11...when these guys were overnight sensations in the UK....but wow....was I a crazed pre-teen over John. LOL
And living in the present....DANG....those pegged pants are HOT on John !!! hahahahaha
WoW!! This just brings memories flooding back. John was such a big part of my early years. I met him not that long ago and as we held hands he said to me "well, where shall we begin, again" and I just melted!!! What a gorgeous, gorgeous bloke he was and I jst can't get it into my head that he has gone. Long may he live, again!!
@TheJgriff72 Our dad would listen with us to radio stations that played this kind of music - and I'd get lost in the great sounds. I was 3 but probably heard this from then until I was 6 over and over. I heard it again about 5 years ago and the memories came back!! What powerful voices coming from young guys!!
i was 17 in 65 i saw the walker brothers in bradford they stole the show off the great roy orebinson the girls went mad r.i.p. john they were great days
Vale John - Having been involved in a major publicity stunt when they toured Australia it is another sad day in Rock ‘n ‘Roll history and makes Rock ‘n’ Roll heaven and even better place.
A group who never quite got the recognition they so richly deserved, with their great vocals, and once again more of our youthful past has left us,very sad.
Another Great slice of the 60s died on the 7th of May. Taken another big piece from us music fans as well, from the finest trio of singers ever. RIP forever big John.... Will the sun ever shine again....
Why is it always when someone dies, it's when you discover the real music that the modern music industry has shunned nowadays. Why could I have not heard this earlier? Absolutely brilliant stuff. RIP John Walker. Thank you for giving me another reason to believe in music again!
Just heard the sad news on the radio!John thanks for this great kind of music you left us behind....I heard this great number when I was five and despite my young age I love it and it will last forever!
This great number and others will continue to rise and travel into the future ....
When I hear some of the stuff from the the 60's and 1970's it really reminds how far popular music has fallen in quality over the last 30 years. The boomers with all their faults undoubtably were the most giften musical generation to yet come along.
@Karmalize I love the list of who will be featured on the next show - all Mods. 1965 was great time for music. "Sonny and Cher, the [sic] Cream, the Who, the Kinks..." You could turn on the radio and here hits from all of them played in the same hour - along with the Beatles, the Stones, the Supremes, the Temptations and of course the Righteous Brothers. ("Unchained Melody" was the year's #1 song.)
The boots are Spanish flamenco dancers boots...Was this a Phil Spector session? Probably...but he had a group of devotees like Shadow Morton and Sonny Bono who could get the same sound.
@caesiume I love the Walking Dead, and I'm a 24-year-old kid. I found this randomly though, and not because of the Walking Dead. Do I have to scram or is it okay to listen if I admit that your generation seems to have done the music thing better than mine can?
funny thing is these American guys were huge in England but overshadowed in the US by the Righteous Brothers. They were not English and not brothers! But this song is timeless even if Scott has gone on to make some bizarre and brilliant music( see Jesse..about Elvis Presley's stillborn twin brother from inside the womb!).
Acutally the fantastic documentary "Scott Walker 30 Century Man" sent me here which everyone should catch on Netflix. Fascinating guy. But kudos to Walking Dead.
Unless you caught these singers of the60's on Ed Sullivan or American Bandstand the exact day and time they appeared, you never saw the singer sing his song---you just heard it on the radio. Incredible to see performers like these sing songs that are almost painful how they bring back a time and era that will never be again.
this is not from japan tv. this is from german tv (west germany not GDR). the name of the show was "beat club" produced by the german tv station Radio Bremen.
