We don't kill people for those kinds of acts, we put them in prison.
The answer to the problem is that the story is exactly that, just a story, god didn't give any orders to kill anyone.
Those people had it coming for their loathsome behaviour. They burned their children alive! (The Israelites didn't even have prisons, they were at that time, nomadic). The innocents would have been diseased as well (no fault of their own) and by killing everybody, God punished the responsible adults, and immediately took the true innocents into heaven. It didn't have to happen that way of course. But bad behaviour has consequences.
Disobeying God has horrific consequences, but God never rejects those who change their attitude. Some of those adults knew what they had been doing was wrong. At the point of imminent death, they may have thought through their situation and realized their guilt. It's possible before death they admitted their evil before God. God would have saved such people. He saves even the very worst people who truly realize their need for Him.
I disobey your god constantly, the concequences of my actions are that I have a lot more free time on sundays and I no longer feel threatened by some undetectable monster in the sky, I'm free to enjoy my short time of earth without living in fear. Where are these horrific concequences?

YOU selectively took the 10 commandments and I responded to it. YOU were the one who brought up Lev. and Deut. laws. YOU were the one who made it an issue.
Lev. and Deut. are laws AND the way the Israelite culture should go about punishing people who broke them. There is no commandment that states: kill those who break the law, or kill those who don't believe what you do.

Those people had it coming for their loathsome behaviour. They burned their children alive! (The Israelites didn't even have prisons, they were at that time, nomadic). The innocents would have been diseased as well (no fault of their own) and by killing everybody, God punished the responsible adults, and immediately took the true innocents into heaven. It didn't have to happen that way of course. But bad behaviour has consequences.

Disobeying God has horrific consequences, but God never rejects those who change their attitude. Some of those adults knew what they had been doing was wrong. At the point of imminent death, they may have thought through their situation and realized their guilt. It's possible before death they admitted their evil before God. God would have saved such people. He saves even the very worst people who truly realize their need for Him.

I'm sure that skeptics will have documented this kind of behaviour (burning their children alive as a sacrifice to the gods) because it is an example of the "horrors of religion" which I am sure that skeptics have likely documented.
It was a pretty well known phenomena in the ancient world. But to tell you the truth, I need to get a direct quotable source on this. So perhaps I should before bringing it up again.

In our two worldviews, we have two basic ideas (limited to the origins of biology) - that either nature has originated life, or else God (or a designer - since we can't tell from this evidence the identity of such a designer - though I personally believe it is God) originated life.
Both worldviews have no direct observational evidence of the correctness of their position. So instead we use indirect evidences. Both sides have these indirect evidences.

When I say indirect, I mean that what we believe (you in abiogenesis, and myself in God) cannot at this time be observed, repeated or tested. We are talking about events that (if they actually ever did happen) happenned in the past. One off events for which we can only study indirect evidences of, in leiu of the actual events themselves.
Abiogenesis and God are two concepts that have many similarities (though of course, many differences).

But abiogenesis IS being tested scientifically and while our ideas about abiogenesis don't constitute fully formed scientific theory nevertheless we have some very good ideas about what happened and how. We know the complex precursor molecules required for life form naturally due to their chemical affinities, what we don't have evidence for is that it happened magically and was the work of some undetectable being.
