Diana Damrau is by far the greatest and was also in a good production of the Magic Flute. Most of them look really silly or obnoxious if compared to the production that she was in, that was beautiful and simple at the same time.
I listened to this intently as i was keen to participate in the exercise. I think i have heard it enough now to last me for the next 10 years. You can have too much of a good thing and this is a perfect example. The only avenue now open to me is to listen to my personal favourite by Lucia Popp and see if i can exorcise the demon.
Since so many people have asked, Mrs. XXX is none other than the infamous Florence Foster Jenkins, (google her) and that clip is from her infamous Carnegie Hall concert. Yes, she played Carnegie Hall. Once. Because she could afford to. Ridicule her singing (or whatever that is) all you want, but one must concede that the woman had the courage to live her dream. As she once said, "People may say I can't sing, but no one can ever say I didn't sing."
2:14 makes some funny faces when she sings...hehe. But it sounds good! So I guess it's worth it! Rachel Rosales outfit reminds me of Queen Padme. And that gave me the idea of Star Wars as an opera. That idea will never leave my head.
Love Diana Damrau's acting also and her notes are just perfect. Sumi Jo has the notes, and Gruberova has a beautiful sound in her voice but have some problems with tempo and tone, but she made this very dificult aria very beautifuly.
Mrs. XXX, just love her like Mrs. Florence Foster Jenkins. Check it out.
Although this is a hard aria, it is definitely not the "most difficult" Have you heard the "Bell Song" from Lakme? It is much more complex technically, dynamically, and plays with the soprano's passaggio dancing in and out of her whistle register. Also the high note in it is a G6, sung piano, which is hard for even the most talented coloratura to sing. I would recommend Ingebord Hallstein's version. It's my personal favorite.
It's so bizarre now to think that Damrau wasn't especially well-reviewed in the role when this ROH production opened. IMO she totally nailed this moment - her crescendi on the repeated notes were electrifying live. And her Queen was much more than a scary canary; Damrau kicked ass all over her voice, not just in her extension. Trivia moment for all the fans of Diana's frock - the production designer was the uber-sexy John McFarlane. My suggestion for the "Why-Isn't-She-Here?" list: Carol Vaness.
pas facile à chanter avec une choregraphie... et pourtant regarder l'aisance avec laquelle nathalie dessay chante cela! Ces contre-fa qui me font trembler sont epoustouflant!
I agree with all these statements. Diana Damrau is the best. She has the most breath control, doesn't rush the orchestra, and has no weaken on any of those notes. Some of those women couldn't even hit the F#. Really??
I admittedly just came here to disagree with the title, a harder aria is Numi Respiro... ah lo Sento from Europa Riconosciuta by Salieri. the title character has to sing numerous F6 and F#6s throughout the opera along with two G6s in Numi Respiro... ah lo Sento. but nice collection of evil queens.
My favourite is Foster Florence Jenkins... Really, I'm joking, a terrible joke for a horrid singer. Sometimes I wonder if she was just playing us all.
@aalg4c LOL. She certainly was unique and her voice was instantly recognizable, she was also - using the words of one critic of her time - "inimitable". I'll vote for Damrau though.
this aria is only difficult if you don't have the high F. in that case it is an impossible aria. but if you have the note it should be quite standard to sing it. there are other operas with sopranos roles and arias that are truly demanding like norma, semiramide, lucia di lammermoor, armida, abigaille, turandot, and none of them require a high F.
LUCIANA SERRA is really the best of the best. Her voice and her italian way breathing just amazing. The others... ... some of them really either looks like a street hooker or gangster... ... doesn't look like a classic tale evil queen at all ! ~~~
Me extraña que falte la mejor de todas Edda Moser y coincido además en que esta no es el aria más difícil, Popoli di tessaglia de Mozart es muchísimo más complicada.
Obviously the lady from 8:21 is purposely doing that. You can tell because when she goes on the high registers, she's always able to hit the same notes all 4 times.
I love how Deutekom doesnt act at all, her face just remains blank the whole time, like she's focusing really hard on singing right lol. Good thing she's so good, tho.
I couldn't help but noticing the big grin on the face of the violinist behind Mrs. XXXX at 8:56.
She reminds me a bit of Florence Foster Jenkins, but it couldn't be her, since she died some time before this video was shot. The story of Florence Foster Jenkins is in some way quite tragic, look her up on wikipedia, or youtube (but be warned...).

At 0:07 they tried to look too "modern".
And what the hell were they thinking with that costume at 0:34?

If you don't have the technique and if you're not 100% fit, it will strain your voice, just like Madame Diana Damrau said.
