Flash memory isn't necessarily faster than HDDs. I suggest looking up the difference between NAND memory and NOR memory, the difference between static memory and dynamic memory, and the concept similar to RAID with relevance to SSD controllers. The flash drives you held up don't have that "RAID-like concept" so they're very slow; A good quality USB flash drive might work at 20MB/sec while a good quality HDD will work at 100MB/sec+ over the first 20% of the drive.
