Perhaps. I personally believe some FADC's are advanced and some aren't. For example, a basic FADC into ultra from a SRK is very basic and easy to do. With a weeks practice, most people would be able to do it consistently.
But then again, in tournament level play, "advanced combos" and FADC's don't necessarily even exist because they are too difficult to pull off - with the exception of 1 frame links which are easier if you plink them.

@DarkGreen2000 Only Gouken can successfully parry in sf4. Everyone else has to use the focus attack. For exapmple, if u use an EX parry with Gouken, he can parry two attacks then lash out equal damage immediately. Focus attacks can only handle one attack then is broken, so watch out for EX attacks when using a focus attack.

Cheers for the responses guys...Truth be told, i use the stick..but thats strictly out of habit from playing 2d fighters (emulated) using the stick of generic controllers eg Logitech. I genuinely find it hard to use the d-pad..I fid the d-pad soo hard to use and I practilly burn the crap out of my thumb using it..

@Tuffadandem I play just fine with the D-pad, but it took a while for me to get used to it. I've never tried using the analogue stick, so I wouldn't know. If you wanna get serious about the game, though, you should probably buy a Street Fighter IV arcade stick.

Focus Attack is not a new thhing .....i clearly remember you had the same thing in Street Fighter 3 Alpha i think (The one that had characters like Guren and D.Dark)

@heavenmaycryHQ You cancel by doing a focus attack (hold MK and MP) right after doing the input for the move you want to cancel. To FADC (focus attack dash cancel), just dash right after you start the focus attack.
@heavenmaycryHQ That's how you cancel for this move. Cancelling in general in this game is anything that stops the animation of a move and starts another move. There are also 1)Chains 2)2 for 1s 3)Specials cancelled by super. Chains are when you cancel normal moves with other normal moves, like LP, LP, LP, LP while just mashing that button. You have to link the normals if you want to be able to 2 for 1 after these. 2 for 1 is just a normal cancelled by a special move.
Doing an ultra after a combo is pointles, I did some testing in training mode and it turns out that the ultra will do less damage if done after a combo then normaly, however doing a super after combo is very affective.(I can ussualy do 50to70% more damege with a super after a combo
@CHOLKYJ ummm you do an ultra after a combo because its guaranteed to hit. if you just throw one out for no reason it will be easily blocked or dodged and then you will get hit with an ultra or a big combo
@yoshimek3 I never "throw one out for no reason". I always wait for an opening or do it after a focus attack. I mean that if you do an ultra after a long combo the damage from the ultra will get reduced a lot so it's better to save it for the right moment.
@CHOLKYJ Those openings occur less frequently when you play at against people who know what they are doing. No skilled player will jump in at ken when he has ultra 1 ready. No skilled player will spam fireballs against Dudley with ultra 1 ready or Ibuki with ultra 2.

(RYU) towards +hp xx hp dragon punch FADC ultra 1 does 483 damage. His ultra 1 alone does 369
(Chun li) c lk xx c lk xx EX legs xx ultra 2 does 336 damage and gives you time to hit confirm. Her ultra 2 alone does 330.
@CHOLKYJ "Doing an ultra after a combo is pointless" This is inaccurate. If you were playing competitively and your opponent had about 1/4 of life left and they got caught into a combo that couldn't completely wipe out the remainder of his/her life, the ultra would be a perfect addition to the combo to finish off the remaining bit of life the opponent has left. You wouldn't just leave the combo alone because you wanted to do a full 60% damage on a person who has a slither of health left.
@CHOLKYJ It's called damage scaling. So by your reasoning, you shouldn't do combos of more than 3 hits ever because it will start scaling the damage down on the later moves and you can't do as much damage as you could do with those moves normally. Yup free unblockable damage is pointless.
@PhilomathBret I mean only ultras. Because you can do normal moves as much as you want but you can't do ultras as much as you want so it's better to save your ultra for the right moment.
what kind of controller would anybody suggest playing this game? the standard, the slightly modified one (with just a d-pad and the LB and RB buttons next to ABXY buttons) or the arcade controller? or is it all just preference? i just want to know whats more effective at improving ur combos...
Starting from scratch there's nothing better than an arcade stick. You get the hang of it quick and makes the most advanced combos easy with enough practise. Arcade sticks are just more expensive than pads though.

@Tinkzzappah if u are using a standard controller practise your thumb movements, if your a joy stick player, practise your wrist movement. Try to relx while you do it because you can move lot faster

Advanced tactics cover P-linking, pianoing, double tapping, option selects, priority dominance, meaty attacks, frame data, hitboxes, zoning, footsies, baiting, mix-up's, air resets, advanded combos etc

@heavenmaycryHQ You cancel by doing a focus attack (hold MK and MP) right after doing the input for the move you want to cancel. To FADC (focus attack dash cancel), just dash right after you start the focus attack.

@heavenmaycryHQ That's how you cancel for this move. Cancelling in general in this game is anything that stops the animation of a move and starts another move. There are also 1)Chains 2)2 for 1s 3)Specials cancelled by super. Chains are when you cancel normal moves with other normal moves, like LP, LP, LP, LP while just mashing that button. You have to link the normals if you want to be able to 2 for 1 after these. 2 for 1 is just a normal cancelled by a special move.

Doing an ultra after a combo is pointles, I did some testing in training mode and it turns out that the ultra will do less damage if done after a combo then normaly, however doing a super after combo is very affective.(I can ussualy do 50to70% more damege with a super after a combo

@CHOLKYJ ummm you do an ultra after a combo because its guaranteed to hit. if you just throw one out for no reason it will be easily blocked or dodged and then you will get hit with an ultra or a big combo

@yoshimek3 I never "throw one out for no reason". I always wait for an opening or do it after a focus attack. I mean that if you do an ultra after a long combo the damage from the ultra will get reduced a lot so it's better to save it for the right moment.

@CHOLKYJ Those openings occur less frequently when you play at against people who know what they are doing. No skilled player will jump in at ken when he has ultra 1 ready. No skilled player will spam fireballs against Dudley with ultra 1 ready or Ibuki with ultra 2.

(RYU) towards +hp xx hp dragon punch FADC ultra 1 does 483 damage. His ultra 1 alone does 369
(Chun li) c lk xx c lk xx EX legs xx ultra 2 does 336 damage and gives you time to hit confirm. Her ultra 2 alone does 330.

@CHOLKYJ "Doing an ultra after a combo is pointless" This is inaccurate. If you were playing competitively and your opponent had about 1/4 of life left and they got caught into a combo that couldn't completely wipe out the remainder of his/her life, the ultra would be a perfect addition to the combo to finish off the remaining bit of life the opponent has left. You wouldn't just leave the combo alone because you wanted to do a full 60% damage on a person who has a slither of health left.

@CHOLKYJ It's called damage scaling. So by your reasoning, you shouldn't do combos of more than 3 hits ever because it will start scaling the damage down on the later moves and you can't do as much damage as you could do with those moves normally. Yup free unblockable damage is pointless.

@PhilomathBret I mean only ultras. Because you can do normal moves as much as you want but you can't do ultras as much as you want so it's better to save your ultra for the right moment.

what kind of controller would anybody suggest playing this game? the standard, the slightly modified one (with just a d-pad and the LB and RB buttons next to ABXY buttons) or the arcade controller? or is it all just preference? i just want to know whats more effective at improving ur combos...

Starting from scratch there's nothing better than an arcade stick. You get the hang of it quick and makes the most advanced combos easy with enough practise. Arcade sticks are just more expensive than pads though.

@simplelife88393 yea i was looking them up and the arcade stick is at around 70 bucks. but this is something i want to take a little more serious than normal, and the d-pad is just not doing it for me. so i'm probably gonna end up getting it when the money comes around. thanks for the help though. apreciate it.

@Tinkzzappah if u are using a standard controller practise your thumb movements, if your a joy stick player, practise your wrist movement. Try to relx while you do it because you can move lot faster
