The cardboard template is a wasted step.. Cut your patch piece first then use it as a template to cut the hole in the wall... Also on a patch that small I put my backing strips diagonally across the corner in order to have a screw in all four sides of the patch...
I have done it simular to your way ( with plywood ) dozens of times in remodeling and painting projects. I usually just square off the hole with out making it bigger.
I don't do it like that for small holes! I just use Yellow drywall mesh tape and mud the first coat on the outside edges of the hole. Then the next day I can easily mud the remainder of the hole until I get a clean solid CLOSED up hole.
The final coat is harder than the drywall itself! LOL It never cracks or shows through once the paint goes on for years ;)
That's how I do it though... I find your way a bit too much for small holes like that.
Use the same square cardboard, trace it,but leave a good 1½ square around it as a skin.(Cut on backside of sheetrock)Hold patch firm against something, peel of 1½ sheetrock from skin thats on the patch.Hole is cut in wall and remove skin on wall, just pass the outer skin of patch.Don't make the fit to tight, leave room for joint compound on the sides of sheetrock patch sides & wall.Use a flat to press in patch just right.Rub down skin one good time, let dry well before mud on top of skin.cut bubs
fantastic video!! I actually have a hole behind one of my doors from the door handle, I do have a door stopper there now, just a lil to late lol, thanks so much, im gunna do this on monday, cheers

Just admit it, if you're watching this video, you likely have anger-management issues... I know I do. (My fist is still throbbing.)

Yes it is. I never knew they made it. until a home owner showed it to me the other day. The pink really helps to show it in the video.
