Thank you all for the very kind words and comments. I mainly used Maya (for the modeling, animation, rendering and particle simulations) and Nuke (for the compositing) and I also used some stock footage of the explosion along with some of my own particle explosion.

Students have access to a variety of software, but primarily use Maya, XSI, Nuke, etc. The answer varies by reel/film. Still, it's important to understand that software training means little without the fundamental skills to put it to use.

Maya, 3ds max, Blender3D, Cinema4D, Wings3D, the list is too long to write it down here ;)

Hm, not as impressive as most of the stuff from VFS. The CGI sticks out way too much. Needs more work.
