  • does anyone know where i can watch the original 1973 cast ??

  • Is this the original cast?

  • @emmyaward7 Nope, this was a production at the New York City Opera.

  • As much as I love this production, I really do not like this Anne compared to the one in the revival. This Anne doesn't have the childish whining I feel like Anne needs, nor the depth (Seemingly contradicting, but not really)... and she's really not believable as an eighteen year old.

  • @itsabitironic963 I'm not a huge fan of this Anne either, but you liked Ramona Mallory? Really? I never saw the revival, but I listened to the cast recording and thought she was awful -- a terrible voice and totally OTT interpretation. For me no good can come of overplaying Anne.

  • Danielle is quite talented to play the piano in juxtaposition to the orchestra and sing along with it!

  • As much as I *adore* Sally Ann Howes as Desiree, does anyone think she might be a trifle too wholesome for the role? Just a thought that popped into my head.

  • @90lysander I agree, she is missing a certain... edge to her that really makes Desiree unique.

  • @nanowrimogal I still like her in the role. Her voice is gorgeous, and I like how she and George Lee Andrews portray the warm, witty, wise (and worldly wise) love their characters share. I certainly think she's better than Liz Taylor ... but then again, the one thing Liz did have going for her was some of that "edge."

  • God I love when Desiree's letter. I love the rhythm with the melody of the orchestra.

  • Regina Resnik and Sally Ann Howes are magnificent! The Glamorous Life is, perhaps, my favorite song in this perfect show.

  • omg danielle ferland was in into the woods too right? :)

  • Just saw the revival with Stritch and Bernadette Peters --

Both women did FABULOUS jobs, and some of the cast is just superb (Erin Davies as Charlotte, Aaron Lazar as the Count, and the Liebeslieder Singers) but it simply did not have the class and epic quality that this production has. This cast is just incredible.

  • @AtLastOnTheGround I'm probably gonna sound like a broken record, but I still prefer the original cast. This is a superb cast, but for the most part, the original is superior, especially when it comes to the Count and the Liebslieders.

  • @TheSondheimFan Laurence Guittard is definitely superior to Michael Maguire, I'll give you that. It's also difficult to beat Len Cariou and and Victoria Mallory. And anyone's better than the super-annoying Danielle Ferland. On the other hand, I really love Regina Resnik, Maureen Moore, and Susan Terry in this production. With Desiree, and with the Quintet, I can really go either way.

  • @90lysander There's something very real about Glynis Johns' performance that makes her the best Desiree in my eyes, and there's no comparison when it comes to Benjamin Rayson and Teri Ralston in the Liebslieders for me.

  • @AtLastOnTheGround I totally agree. I think the girl that played Anne, Ramona Mallory, was just stunning. She really stole the show.

  • @UnderThisSmile

Actually, I think that Mallory was the worst actress I've ever seen in a professional production. Dreadful!

  • @AtLastOnTheGround Aww, really? Why do you say that? I must admit I prefer her mother Victoria (the original Anne) in the role, but still thought she brought a great childlike sense to the role.

  • @UnderThisSmile

She played a cartoon of Anne. Anne is meant to be silly, naive, and materialistic -- not much going on beneath the surface. Ramona played an obnoxious little brat who was completely unlikable. I think that Lesley Anne Down's portrayal of Anne (in the junky little film version of ALNM) was spot-on.

  • I keep hearing a loud hissing during the videos. I don't know if the problem is in my earphones or not. Does anybody else hear it?

  • @QueenBoadicea It's the recording itself, unfortunately. I got this from someone who taped the original broadcast and then transferred it to DVD, so the quality is less than perfect.

  • I love Danielle Ferland in Into the Woods. But not here, Fredrika should look, Idk... youngish

  • 1:58 - 3:57 = Divinity on stage

  • @cbiswhite (When Anne's in her robe, she looks very much like a traditional representation of an angel, doesn't she?) I adore the way their voices meld together detailing their longings, fears and frustrations and Frederik's final murmur of "Desiree" is perfect. The way this actor hugs, kisses and squeezes his pillow is funny and at the same time deeply moving.

  • Am I the only one who actually prefers the film version of "Glamorous Life"?

  • I like the song that Fredrika sings in the movie, but at the same time I think that then stage version so much better fits the purpose of the number.

  • Well as far as physical staging goes, the original version makes sense just because it's setting up for the Theater Scene. But the film version, to me, has much better lyrics and makes the audience have stronger feelings for Fredrika and her mother's story.

  • Yes...

  • i like it better too

  • No, I definitely do, too. I also prefer the film's opening- which seems to connect much better to the following storyline.

  • Same here. "Love Takes Time" is a great song -- And some of its lyrics ("Love is a lecture on how to correct your mistakes") are Sondheim at his best.

  • @AtLastOnTheGround True fact! The lyrics are amazing "love is just resenting the time love takes"

But I have a soft spot for overtures with bits from many songs, and "Remember?" So I'm torn on the subject

  • lol "mother's misguided la-la-la"....

  • Whatever happened to Danielle Ferland? She's such a superb Sondheim interpreter.

  • She was recently in the revival of All My Sons.
