Tu vedrai is probably my favourite part of Trovatore... and this is beautifully sung although this little strange things that she doest with certain notes.... but I like her Leonora.
Above all, Verdi's middle operas are very much a bel canto sing. They are more dramatic, yes, but Verdi's music was always true italian bel canto. It requires a voice trained that way, and Caballe is one of the best. Great post Onegin65. These clips are rare!
Ya know, these great women did not believe that you had to throw your voice out of commission just for the sake of some blood thirsty enthusiasts who can't wait to rip them apart because they dont sound like some warhorse hollering through a role. Caballe is doing "Caballe"! And knowing Caballe, she probably had a "Borgia" to do the next evening!! Therefore, what you are listening to is the artistry of Caballe using what she is known for "Bel Canto!"
she was THE MOST versatile of the "great gals" (Tebaldi, Milanov, Sutherland, Price, Nilsson). check out her repertoire:Bellini, Donizetti, Mozart, Puccini, Verdi, Strauss, Wagner, and the list goes on. I read that she was learning new literature in her 60's!!! This from a Price die-hard!!!!
if by not enough power you mean the sound is velvety and unforced throughout while still cutting through orchestra, fellow soloist and chorus, then by golly you must be right.

she is just speculating her pianissimo which sounds good but is not what Verdi wrought. She changed Leonora wich is unucceptable although she sounds great.
I love Caballe - but why does she not sing it as Verdi wrote it? There are far too many liberties taken here.

What should be this place without Onegin65?
Nothing!

I suggested on another video that we should all chip in and subsidize Onegin65 so he could spend all his time hunting down these great performances.

I agree with Caruso. Maybe it's the audio quality but I don't hear depth and power in her voice here that is required for this role.

She is not the ideal Leonora, but her voice is ok here not more. Lack a bit in power.

This is a great performance but I saw her in Philly about this time with Domingo. Her voice sounded underpowered at the top.
Heard her as Maddalena with Corelli. Beautiful but not her best stuff and THEN
Imogena in Il Pirata - Great
Luisa in Luisa Miller- Unbelievable.
She is one of the true great IMHO.
