  • Great video! Very innovative way to project the image. Did you use a special first surface mirror or a regular one?

  • @vpleric The mirror is acrylic not glass for obvious reasons...and no nothing special about it other then being careful not to scratch the backside where the reflective paint is.

    Thanks for the comments!

  • Brilliant use of the mirror for tight spaces. The whole system looks very professional.

  • COOL..

  • Would you be able to place the projector behind the sheet but pointing towards it? Instead of using a mirror?

  • @NikkiiBlade

Yes you can..but to fill that size screen you will have to build the stand deeper to get

the same effect of filling the screen..unless you purchased a short throw projector.

  • When you say stay away from bulb projectors, do you mean lamps? Are there lamp free projectors? Sorry, I'm totally new to this, but looking to have a projection setup for my stage shows like you.... lost as to what type of projector I should get...

  • @SpankieValentine

yes when I say "lamps" I mean bulbs.Look for LCD or DLP.The only type of lamps

I think still available are probably used older ones.

  • I have an 8ftx6ft fastfold and a short throw projector but even this needs about 3metres projection distance. I have thought about using a mirror like in a projection TV. A setup like yours might work - possibly with 2 mirrors - periscope fashion?

  • @UlfilasUk

I would first try with one mirror first before committing to 2.I am surprised your not satisfied with your short throw? first see how this works.I didnt want to make it complicated by bouncing off multiple mirrors,I need it to be mobile for my needs,Your video quality may suffer with 2 mirrors...:(

  • Freakin' great idea! I need to do this, thanks Lineman55!

    DJ RuDe

    Keep Spinnin'!!

  • Great Idea

  • i love it . u smart

  • Does the size of the Acrylic Mirror matter say if it was a bigger projection screen do you need a bigger mirror? thanks

  • That will depend on how far away the projector sits in front of it.If its placed closer to the mirror

a smaller piece can be used.If you use a bigger mirror to reflect a larger image on the screen you will need to increase the distance away from the mirror.

  • Hello, I have a couple of ?'s about your projector itself if you don't mind. I am a photog. & am considering investing in a unit. Could you tell me a bit about yours or one you recommend? I need some input from someone other than a sales person. I'd be using it for ad. purposes in my studio window. Rear projection. Approx screen size of 5x7ft. Relatively dim setting. Preferably connected to dvd player. Thanks so much!!!

  • I can suggest a few tips...

choose a min of 2000 lumens

600x800 would do just fine for what you want to do..$500 + range but if you plan on using it for HD movies you will pay lots more for these models. Most will rear project by reversing the image in the settings. You might also consider a "short throw" model for tight distances to your screen.

Stay away from bulb units..go with LCD or DLP..I hope I helped you in some way.Good luck!

  • You did. Thanks so much!

  • the lens is all thats what make it work.

  • Nice idea!! by all means..show me!

  • There is a group of aviation enthusiasts that build full-size replicas of cockpits and use them for home built simulators for Flight Simulator. The outside view is always the hardest part for most and this is exactly what I've been planning since thinking about how to get around this problem. Thank you for showing me a proof of concept.

  • Thats great!

I myself have been flight simming since the first version! and am still doing it.I had built a 737 cockpit in one of my garage bays for 4 years and have sold it and now have a Bell 206 cockpit in its place.Good luck!

  • You made it look so simple and it is.I just finished my rear projection TV and went about it the hard way.Folks keep with lineman55's basic principal and you'll be happy with the results.I picked up a Mitsubishi RPTV off the side of the road ,took off the screen and mirror, with a cheap projector.Cost under $50..looks priceless. Thanks for the detailed posting.

  • Nice idea with the tv parts! good find!

Those screens are not cheap either.

  • Nice job lineman55. I'm wanting to do the same think but I'm not quite so handy. Any chance you could provide me with a parts list of each of the pieces (with dimensions)?

Especially the heights and distances and some more detail on the parts used to hang and adjust the mirror.

Also, where did you find black pvc?

I'd like to have one put together for this coming weekend.

  • I used 1 1/2" pvc white and spray painted black using Krylon Fusion for plastic.

aprox 30' in all with t joints and elbows.

The acrylic mirror is now hinged with velcro and I used small solid alum rod with rubber washers to hold the mirror at an angle for adjusting the reflection back to the screen

    Total length is 42" long/deep

    18" wide for the base

screen frame is 39" wide x 35" tall

  • is that a short throw projector?

  • No its not...600x800 res 2000 lumens LCD

  • 6 thumbs up. Mine, my wife's and my 2 year old.

  • cannot wait to give this project a try and to get one built...Thank you!!!

  • Brilliant idea....i use screens alot on my mobile show and will be using this idea...

    Thanks for shareing

  • Im glad you like it! feel free to try different ideas while building it and by all means share them!

  • I have used your video & "supersized" your idea. I am a volunteer dj for our church dances, and used a scaffold tower. Very little room , so it is 3 sections tall. lower 7' if for me & the mixers, computers, Middle section has a 7' wide x 5' tall spandex screen, with the video bouncing off a 36 x 24 mirrror. This provides a 100" screen that everyone can see, and no one can touch! Top 7' section is for all the typical dj lights. Entire setup takes 7' x 5' of floor! Its all UP not out.

  • Very nice setup.

  • Thankyou! and its still going strong with many of venues..

  • good job 10/10

  • Hello

Encloses video because monitor mirroring of bild.82 "at a depth of only 70cm.

    Best regards

    Benny Norman

  • Can you make a lighting truss out of pvc piping? If you can, can you attach the spandex to the truss? I am trying to find an alternative to buying the DJ Screen. I think its well made but can't afford $300 for it.

  • Just go to your neighborhood fabric store! Any white spandex material will do. It comes 50" wide, and you can buy it for $15 per yard. A 50" x 100" peice was $45. unless you stretch it WAY too much, don't even bother sewing the edges.

  • Genius, love it, gotta build one now, lol, thanks for sharing, five stars :-)

  • Glad you liked it...makes a great TV also

  • 10/10 very good

  • Where can you buy the spandex and velcro?

  • Any fabric store that sells oof the roll

  • Hey, how do you capture the audience using a camcorder? What do you need? Do you really need the acrylic mirror for rear projection? Couldn't you just project it against the screen?

  • Using a Sony DCR-HC38 in the USB stream mode.

Reflecting it off the acrylic mirror doubles its size withing the distance I needed. If I just projected it on it within the same distance

the pic would be half the size.

  • does the distance really matters?

what kind of glass you use? if i use ordinary glass will it break?

i would like to use this one. my projector now is DLP.. and seeking a way to put it rear the screen.

    thanks

  • You can move the projector forward/backward to adjust pic size on the made screen.

    No glass was used

It is acrylic material, like plexiglass but made to act like a mirror. They use them in aircraft or public restrooms where they dont want broken mirror glass hurting anyone

  • Its a stretchy material very similar to spandex.

  • Wonderful creation, THANK YOU for sharing!!!!

One question, what kind of fabric did you use in the actual screen [the one fastened to the pvc frame]???

  • i need to make a rear projection screen for a musical production....would a 20x8 foot screen be possible?

  • sure its possible..but not what I have made here. You can make a stand that big with PVC pipe if you wish.Getting the material might be expensive.Experiment with white fabrics at a local fabric store.

  • looks great. what would you recommend if you wanted to make the same thing but with a screen that's 12 ft wide and 8 ft high? thanks for sharing...

  • Your distance would no doubt be greater then 3'deep total PVC length.Unless you have a short throw lens on your projector. When I have the room to project on my large screen which is 11'x 8' my projector sits approx 15'+ behind the screen.

  • Just curious now, to save space, does the set up you have for the projector reflecting onto the acrylic mirror reduce the 15ft to half with the same projection image size than if it was just at 15ft?

I'm limited on rear projection space, but need a big image. is it dependant on the mirror size?

  • That is the principle of it.....you just have to experiment with the video screen size being projected on a wall reflecting off the mirror before you commit to gluing your PVC frame assembly.

  • Thank you for sharing this. I'm planning a flight sim setup and this gives me great ideas. Simple, effective, and ingenious.

  • you are most welcome...is works well for small spaces and doubles the viewing size within 3 feet.

  • Two quick questions please: Is this the screen that you use in your heli sim, and what did you make that cockpit window framing with? (yes, I'm picking your brain, if you have time!)

  • No this is used for my DJ gigs where space is small for different venues. My screen for my sim is a rear projection screen I purchasd about 6 yrs ago.You can get away with a shower curtain stretched if you have to.Once the projector is on most of the wrinkles will not be seen.Try using a hair dryer to help take out the folds.

The front windscreen and cockpit frame is made up of wood and Sintra (pvc) 1/8 thick.can be bought in a 4x8 sheet like plywood.

  • Thank you very much for your help! I'll let you know what I come up with. I have flown helicopters professionally and your awesome projector setup really got the adrenaline going again.

  • I envy you for flying the real thing..I have taken an intro on a R22 for 2 hrs.I also fly radio controlled scale models as a hobby.

  • Thanks!

  • nice

  • who care's

  • you do..you watched it didnt you?

  • cool.
