I was at my grandmother's and she had a huge bookshelf. Well, I found a very old copy of Alice in Wonderland, from the early 30's and my grandmother let me have it :) I have read it from cover to back and I'm so afraid it will rip, but it's one of my most precious items from her.
oh my gos val, i'm totally crazy about alice too. i can't wait for the new movie to come out, tim burton rocks. i am a bit like the mad hatter... and he has a special place in my heart. i'm kinda silly and crazy insane like him and i can't wait until you make the mad hatter painting !! that will be my favorite i know it already.
hi.. i went to your site to check out your paintings for sale.. do you still have this one or has it been sold already? please respond when you have a chance, thank you.. bye
ok so i think that alice in wonderland is like a imaginary world the reaon i say it cause when i was younger like 5-7 years old i reemember that every night i would go to my treehouse and read the book even dough i finished it i read it again and again and again cause it was a great stroy its this rabit and a girl with these people made of card man i wana read it again
mew, i love alice in wonderland too! your painting is brilliant and you have the most precious voice <3
what i love about alice in wonderland is that, its just a way to live life, nonsensically but also curious . dreaming or questioning reality. it pushes me to think. and the disney movie made i colorful and funny. and its also funny! i can never feel bad when i read or watch alice in wonderland. unless is jan svankmajer alice, then it gets a little spooky ^_~
When I was younger i use to stay up into the late hours of the night reading Alice's adventures in wonderland and through the looking glass. I can recite it from front to back. and it has inspired so many songs, poems and even drawings for me. It has always been a huge influence in my life, and I cant wait to pass it down to my children and keep the pure nonsense thriving.
I never watched alice in wonderland as a kid! :[ but i am sooo excited to see tim burton's interpretation of it.
but i did actually read the actual book this past summer, and i thought alice represents you, the reader, and how she (meaning you) are alone in the world..you are alone in a world of equally strange people. It's so sad! but at the same time its so poetic. at least that was my interpretation of her.
i never got alice in wonderland as a kid.. and by the time i understood parts of it, i wanted to go back and not understand it b/c you just embrace the nonsense and by it not making sense, it made sense... does that make sense???
Alice in Wonderland is an amazing story. I remember being read to as a kid, and this was one of the stories I always enjoyed. Your painting is amazing and definitely captures the essence of Alice. I wish I was as talented as you!
Alice in Wonderland is suck a good Story, Mainly because of the whole plot. after reading all of the old boring books. its nice to see an exciting, random book come out. I love this book : )
have you tried reading alice in wonderland while stoned? >.> don't try it! O.O apparently, my uncle did...and he still thinks the book makes complete sense. i asked him to explain it to me, but keeps saying "those who don't understand themselves don't have the right to have someone else tell all." =_+ so yeah.....i don't encourage it...
cool videos. i just found out about you...like 10 minutes ago. ^^
My name is Halla, I am a young artist, and I just recently got a new bedroom that needs some "colour" to the walls, if you know what I mean. I am going to be adding my own drawings of course, but Alice would be a wonderful addition!
I loved it. Your work still ceases to amaze me. I only discovered your videos around a month back and after the first one I watched I just had to subscribe.
I love your interpretation of Alice. Just to pick out something I particularly like, its her hair. It looks fantastic and you did a great job on the face. Oh! I just love it all! Haha. Cant wait for your next video!
you have inspired me to pick up my copy of alice;s adventures in wonderland and read it for the 1st time in many years.....see you down the rabbit hole and as always....great painting! peace and blessings to you and all who read this...and even those who don't :P
The new Alice in wonderland looks like shit , it's a rip off of Amercian Mcgee's Alice , and this fuckers are just calling it tim burton's alice , fucking faggots.
I love Alice in Wonderland because it's so literally and figuratively dream-like.Things and situations drift and transmute with little or no logic save that peculiar logic of the subconscious. And that strange logic is really nothing more than random association games. For example where Alice is with the queen and then Alice is in a shop with a sheep sitting in a chair and as she goes to look at the items on the shelf she finds herself in a row boat with the sheep. Ah Carroll's story was amazing
This video is exactly what I love about you Val... your pure art and your thoughts that come with it ! This week's episode is absolutely sweet and the painting gorgeous ! :)
I enjoyed viewing the painting you did of Alice in Wonderland, I especially liked when you zoomed in on the detail of her eyes, I can't say i understand the painting but you are very gifted
Hey funny enough i'm reading it now (yes at the age of 21) .....and i'm enjoying it actually but not finish yet bit more to go...LoVe Your painting Again as always
I remember dressing up as Alice after my mom read me the books. I loved it so much I was her for a day. When we got home, we were locked out of the house, and being in my Alice in Wonderland dress my mom convinced me our window was the rabbit hole that I had to climb through, and that the house was a different place when I was in it alone. So my house became my own wonderland before I remembered I had to let her in.
I remember one time you said you liked The Beatles in a live chat :) Did you know Alice in Wonderland was John Lennon's favorite book growing up?
Anyway, I love this story! You interpreted it wonderfully. Dark but still light and fun. Your work never ceases to amaze me. I love, love the way you painted your subjects for this one! They have beautiful, dreamy faces. Can't wait for the next!
I don't think I will be able to say anything that you might classify as your favourite comment. Everything in my heart that I want to pour out to you has already been said in many of the previous comments. You have some very eloquent and very dedicated viewers Val! Their comments inspire me as much as you do.
I admire your graciousness towards those of us who admire Val. Seldom do I see a comment anywhere that applauds the opinions of the the viewers so simply yet eloquently as yours.
However, words are art too. Though we all use the same words the picture they can paint is different for each of us. I would encourage you to share your hearts feelings even though you feel you've seen them put up already. You can do it, and I'm sure Val will appreciate it.
Alice went down the rabbit hole, well I went down to the pay the toll and sing with the mice and oh isn't that hatter nice? The cat will slink away in the night and I will take a funny flight down to the floor and through the door! Oh what a wonderful sight! The Queen and running on through the night maybe just a dream but oh how real it seems.
Nonsense. What a wonderful word. It sounds like something silly in of its self, and holds proof that not everything has to have a meaning, or explanation. To live a true life you have to have a bit of nonsense here and there, or you may lose your mind. People have to realize that nonsense is just a part of life, and that's that.
Learn to sing with the purple elephants, my friend, and be free! Dance with pink cats, and be free! Yell nonsense to the world, and be FREE!
i was just gonna put " awesome painting!!", or somethin like that, but now i feel obligated to say somethin great so i win that painting...but i have nothing to say...
That is a beautiful painting! I did a water color painting of Alice just a couple months ago... :) Alice in Wonderland is basically my favorite story ever; I grew up with it and it means a lot to me. Thanks for the video! I enjoyed it :)
"She stretched herself up on tiptoe, and peeped over the edge of the mushroom, and her eyes immediately met those of a large caterpillar, that was sitting on the top with its arms folded, quietly smoking a long hookah, and taking not the smallest notice of her or of anything else."
I did once write whole book of nonsense. Well, maybe not so much of nonsense but it's logic did vary, and there were upside-down expressions a lot. Didn't then dare to show it to anyone, and it only did came like load to life. But fun was to make it, thou.
And i haven't been down in rabbit holes quite a while, my heart only cryes for such of escape,
i just try make some sense to non-. Ain't any moral in that, wonder do your art's fine brush strokes have :)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Your art is quite amateurish, yet you're acting like you're f-ing Dali by posting an entire video dedicated to your crappy art painting my brother could draw better than at 5 years old. Quite embarrassing, really. Go to art school for a few years, learn how to draw some proper figures, come back and show us your new work and then you might stand a chance in selling your work. ;) Coming from a skilled artist.
That's really mean... if you really are a skilled artist you would understand that art is different for everyone, so your taste in art is different from mine.
Val I love your art work, I hope the opinion of one mean and bitter critic won't get you down.
Um, WHAT?!?? First off, there is hardly such a thing as "amateur art". Art is whatever the artist makes it; it has no limits, no rules, no templates.
There are no "proper figures" either. This wasn't a "crappy art painting" and a 5-year old could not have done it - only Val could have made what she did, as one can't make replicas of art.
As many may have noticed, Val could quite easily be TEACHING an art school, and she sort of is already, through YouTube. She's an inspiration. Get a clue :P
My mother taught me that if you don't have something nice to say, then don't say anything. Maybe your mother should have given you the same advise. If you are a skilled artist as you claim, where can we see some to judge your skills? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I personally think Val is talented. I don't know that I would class her as a Salvador Dali or a Van Gogh, but her art appeals to a lot of people. Get a grip and don't rain on someone's parade because you're in a bad mood.
When I first watched Alice In Wounderland, I didn't really understand.
Now I'm older and I realise, it isn't suppose to make sence, it was just a childs imagination getting away from her and she managed to created a whole new world,
Val i would love to have a painting please, not only will i proudly display the painting in my living room but everytime i look at it i will be reminded of your beautiful brown eyes. :)
I didn't like it at first because i didn't get it.
Then I looked at it from my friends view.
It isn't supposed to make sense!! That is the whole point! So now I think of Alice in wonderland as an awesome, fun, crazy, interesting, amazing movie(:
there are probably waaay too many good comments for me to win. BUT if you do read this i think you might like to hear my thoughts?(:
alice in wonderland is so cool b/c it makes you think and come uup with ur own interpretation u have to re-think everything to hold to be true lol and sometimes it's wat we need to do to better ourselves are people :] and that bunny rocks!!!!!!!!!! lol
I wish everyone could take a journey down the rabbit hole to Wonderland! At least to escape from our mundane lives for a moment. Can you imagine sitting down for a cup of tea with the hatter and his friends? (what IS the difference between a raven and a writing desk anyway?) Or being completely flabbergasted as the cheshire cat slowly disappears? And how wonderful would it be to play croquet with a flamingo? Haha! What am I saying? that's nonsense ;)
I want to saaay "Aaaaah" and also stop making me grow for so long!
I vaguely remember watching the film, for some reason it reminds of Wizard of Oz for it's fantasy mind control it has over you. But of course both stories dealt with different issues at their times.
Unfortunatley, MY words could never express how much this painting would mean to me. I cant think of anything else I would rather have on my wall than a painting of my favorite book, from my favorite author, by my favorite artist. I only wish I had something of equal value, such as a Monet, or Van Gogh, to trade you.
If only Lewis Carroll himself was here to see your works of art. I am sure it would inspire him to write a book about a wacky angel named Valice, titled "Valice in Candyland" :)
This is my favorite line from the book: '"Who are YOU?" said the Caterpillar.
This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, "I--I hardly know, sir, just at present-- at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then."'
This stands out to me because we all lose touch with our "old" selves and realize at some random moment in time that we've changed into something w/o even realizing it.
My grand mother Alice use to tell me she was Alice in wonderland and I believed her . It is because of her that Alice in wonderland is special to me would love to have a picture of yours hanging on my plain and empty walls it would bring my plain and simple flat to life . U r a very interesting person with precious talent X
haha Val, I've been watching your vids forever and I'm so happy you painted Alice! Alice has always been my favourite character because I could totally relate to her. Everyone used to say I'm just like her (and that apparently I look like her too!) haha and I guess it didn't help that I was always singing "A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY!"
oh! That reminds me! AAAAAA VERRRRYYY MERRRRYYY unbirthday for ME? FOR YOU!" :D
LOL.....look at what you got yourself into. You're going to have to pick one favorite comment out of like a billion people. The pressures on for you! Good luck :)
Terrific theme rich with artistic possibilities and ideas. Perhaps or even more than perhaps, this was the inspiration for Lewis Carroll's creation: 'To have his work interpreted further.' I can't wait to see your interpretation of the 'Mad Hatter.'
I am definitely ready for a journey down the rabbit hole. I could explore and analyze all of your brush strokes, try to take in every single possible meaning, but instead I'd just like to say that I enjoy this painting quite a bit, as I do all of your work. And I may not be a long time viewer, but I enjoy your videos quite a lot. You're an amazing artist, incredibly beautiful, and your videos are always deeply interesting. the story of Alice has always intrigued me, the nonsensical meaning of it
Is simply perfect for anyone of any age. So I'm very glad you decided to paint her and also glad that this is just the first one. I'm looking forward to seeing more your interpretation of Alice and the rest of Wonderland.
I am currently reading "Alice's Adventures to Wonderland" so I may not know that much about the exact story, but I have always had a special attraction and intrest in Alice...
I also CANNOT wait until then new Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland comes out!
"If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?" - alice
Alice in Wonderland has been my favorite tale since childhood. Even now I enjoy listening to the classic on audio...especially when I find myself sinking into the hole of the mundane. Can you just imagine what fun it would be to have tea with the Mad Hatter?!
What I mean is are you naturally accidentally captivatingly seductive? You are addictive! Heh, heh, how tricky......mmm gotta have a BIG sigh, you are so flamin' cute. Val we are all in love with you but trust me, I am the ONLY, the only one for you. Heh, heh, how creepy. I have extra s p a c e
Like Alice, humans by nature are explorers. Sometimes, we must navigate uncharted waters, traverse unmapped terrain or even let ourselves fall into lonely and yes, scary places to find the wondrous discoveries that await us.
Drugs I reckon, yep that's the answer, other fairy story characters MUST have been on 'em, I mean Rumplestiltskin sleeping for a hundred years? Snow White goin' in to a coma after eating an apple? Hey c'mon you can't spell WONDERLAND without LSD!...well yeah I s'pose you can but hey, you guys know what I'm talking about...dont ya?...yeah some of you guys....you guys...Yeah well speaking of addictions...we are now, c'mon keep up...gotta ask you Val, are you doing this on purpose?Nospaceleft Duff
the thing about nonsensse is that all opposites are on the same wave line. so nonsensse is, in all honesty, the only thing that makes sensse and vise verser.
so, havng said that, what do these sentences i write actually mean?
does it even matter? as long as i'm expressing myself, discovering myself and changing in the process...
a writer writes for themself and i read for me. why cross thoughs 2 lines?
i love alice in wonderland and i love your accent. i live in a foreign country to my own, and you inspire me in more ways than artistically. you give me courage and indurance.
Amazing painting, Alice in wonderland has inspired so many of my stories, and my personal characters. It was one of the first books/movies that made me feel like no matter how wacky my paintings or stories are its a good thing. Plus that there is no such thing as to much color! :D
I LOVE when she is in the house eating the cookies(crackers). One of the first senes in the wonderland...and one of my faves.
Wow, amazing! I loved reading Alice in Wonderland, and your painting seems to sum up the first chapter perfectly, Alices expression of curiosity, the worried look of the white rabbit, it makes me want to follow both you and alice on the mystical journey that you are taking us on through your art. It's exactly as you said, no one has the right or wrong view on what the painting means, we can only percieve it as we percieve it as, an amazing painting, can't wait to see what you have in store.
I love Alice in Wonderland. I'm designing a Queen of Hearts dress for myself, and a Cheshire Cat outfit for my sister. I can't wait until I'm finished, we're going to have so much fun in them. And lots of nonsense. :D
Hey Val. I love Alice in Wonderland, cool painting as always. Also the way you drew Alice she kinda looks like you with her eyes and hair a little bit, lol. Looking forward the the rest odf the series - So many characters which will look great in other paintings.
Very astute words: "Nonsense rocks," for in truth there is an imaginary borderland between all we know and accept as normal, or culturally dominate themes and that magical realm beneath that is decent into the rabbit hole--the mysterious boundary that explores the power and mystique of the collective unconscious (Carl Jung). This work captures the essence of revolt against social norms, and explores aesthetic worlds of magic and self-actualization. It is there where new ideas change the world.
"It seems a shame" the walrus said, "To play them such a trick, After all we've brought them out so far, And made them trot so quick!" The Carpenter said nothing but "The butter's spread too thick!"
some of my best childhood memories come from watching movies like "alice in wonderland" at my grandmothers while eating piping hot, just out of the oven, chocolate chip cookies... good stuff.
Your paintings are cool, your videos are great, but the real picture of beauty here is you. I wish I could take you out to dinner and a movie, you should have some kind of a contest to win a date with you, I would def sign up.. I am 30ish and single, I have many talents and more than one job,I live in CA and my fav vid by you so far is I DONT LIKE PRETTY BOYS.
I have always loved Alice in Wonderland, and each time I re-read it I just grow to love it more! I am so excited to see what my fave director, Tim Burton has in store for Alice, and for my fave character, the Chesire Cat. It's always fun to see the way different artists and directors portray him!
Watching your videos is kinda like Alice going down the rabbit hole. You never know what surprise awaits you. Huge spoons in bathtubs, talking paintbrushes and jars for example.
Then in high school i wrote a 20 page reflection on how the book inspired me, and it has help me grow as an individual from then on :) thank you for this piece of artwork, its by far my favorite because it actually means something to me :-D
i love alice in wonderland because when i was a child i was never really accepted by my fellow class mates or the kids in my neighborhood. so i would fill my afternoons after school getting lost in the woods and pretending i was off in wonderland having as many adventures as possible with all of the characters, mostly The Mad Hatter along side Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.
I like this painting because it adds another dimention to the story. The rabbit in this painting looks similar to Alice, so in a way Alice is leading herself into adventure.
My favorite part of Alice in Wonderland is the part where she met the Cheshire Cat in a forest. Alice asked him the way. CC it depends on where to. Alice replied it doesn't matter and CC said to then it dpesn't matter which way she goes.
BTW Nice to see your painting vids again, I have missed that
They say nonsense is "sense" that is hidden deeper. And its enlightenment is for those who seek it.
This is true? For example in Val's "Pooping Bunny" video where she chases the rabbit like Alice, if you look hard enough at the 0:46 mark, you will see that Val is "a painter who's outstanding in her field" :)
I'm so excited that they're making an alice in wonderland movie with Jonny Depp!!!!! <3 the story and I did an art project on it also! Easily my fav art project of all time lol
I love your artwork by the way, it's gorgeous and inspiring!
i am completely in love with the book because i think its just so amazing how far the imagination can go. like i would just lke to live one day in wonderland just to see what its like. i'd probably go mad myself but unlike in the real world, in wonderland my insanity would probably make me blend in even more.
Not only is it a movie I traditionally watch when I'm sick, but its also an escape/journey through imagination, nonsense, and the unreal. The colors the characters are so incredibly entertaining, but they all parallel something in our lives. Every scene has a way of metaphorically symbolizing different themes like authority, choosing a path, cheating, promptness, curiosity, segregation, and most important, sensibility. I love this movie and this video and you Val!
"Welcome to Wonderland" is the inscription of my copy of Alice in Wonderland and Through the looking glass. My husband gifted me for our wedding. When I was young I adored Alice and her trips into her Wonderland exploring her imagination.
Now as and adult I am able to appreciate the stories in a new way from the view of the author. I absolutely adore your video blog, I've been watching it for years.
olutely adores the poems!
I started reading the story to Alisen (my daughter)
I wonder if I've been changed in the night? Let me think. Was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I'm not the same, the next question is 'Who in the world am I?' Ah, that's the great puzzle!
Reeling and Writhing, of course, to begin with, and then the different branches of arithmetic -- Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, and Derision. - The mock turtle
Take care of the sense, and the sounds will take care of themselves. xx
"I wonder if I've been changed in the night? Let me think. Was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I'm not the same, the next question is 'Who in the world am I?' Ah, that's the great puzzle!" -Alice
This is my favorite quote from the book... it is such truly human thought as we are always changing and discovering ourselves.
Your accent rocks

Their comments inspire me as much as you do.
seabury 2 years ago 2
Seabury,
I admire your graciousness towards those of us who admire Val.

Alice meets the caterpillar:

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Your art is quite amateurish, yet you're acting like you're f-ing Dali by posting an entire video dedicated to your crappy art painting my brother could draw better than at 5 years old. Quite embarrassing, really. Go to art school for a few years, learn how to draw some proper figures, come back and show us your new work and then you might stand a chance in selling your work. ;) Coming from a skilled artist.
runpoochrun2 2 years ago
That's really mean... if you really are a skilled artist you would understand that art is different for everyone, so your taste in art is different from mine.
Val I love your art work, I hope the opinion of one mean and bitter critic won't get you down.
lcwpd52973 2 years ago 3
Um, WHAT?!?? First off, there is hardly such a thing as "amateur art". Art is whatever the artist makes it; it has no limits, no rules, no templates.
There are no "proper figures" either. This wasn't a "crappy art painting" and a 5-year old could not have done it - only Val could have made what she did, as one can't make replicas of art.
As many may have noticed, Val could quite easily be TEACHING an art school, and she sort of is already, through YouTube. She's an inspiration. Get a clue :P
LilMissOuttaHerMind 2 years ago 9
My mother taught me that if you don't have something nice to say, then don't say anything. Maybe your mother should have given you the same advise. If you are a skilled artist as you claim, where can we see some to judge your skills? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I personally think Val is talented. I don't know that I would class her as a Salvador Dali or a Van Gogh, but her art appeals to a lot of people. Get a grip and don't rain on someone's parade because you're in a bad mood.

When I first watched Alice In Wounderland, I didn't really understand.

AceChaser 2 years ago
This is my favorite line from the book: '"Who are YOU?" said the Caterpillar.
This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, "I--I hardly know, sir, just at present-- at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then."'
This stands out to me because we all lose touch with our "old" selves and realize at some random moment in time that we've changed into something w/o even realizing it.

I wrote my college essay about this excerpt from Alice in Wonderland.
Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?
The Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to
Alice: I don't much care where.
The Cat: Then it doesn't much matter which way you go.
Alice: so long as I get somewhere.
The Cat: Oh, you're sure to do that, if only you walk long enough.
and that was how I based my essay, on that sometimes the path in life isn't clear, but keep walking

I am definitely ready for a journey down the rabbit hole. the thing about nonsensse is that all opposites are on the same wave line. so nonsensse is, in all honesty, the only thing that makes sensse and vise verser.
so, havng said that, what do these sentences i write actually mean?
does it even matter? as long as i'm expressing myself, discovering myself and changing in the process...

Wow, amazing!

Alice came to a fork in the road. "Which road do I take?" she asked.

They say nonsense is "sense" that is hidden deeper. And its enlightenment is for those who seek it.
