have just seen the dvd ''in search of anna'' , it sounds like THE DEALER , COULDN'T LOVE YOU MORE AND CERTAIN SURPRISE ARE REWORKED . the track anna is at the start of the film . at the end credits john is credited for the three tracks above , but no sign of any credits at all for anna? . MICHAEL NORTON is only credit on the dvd box , but at the end of the film credits nothing for him at all . bloody great film .
Hi Ned...If you read 5 above you'll see that this is the single version but with a bit of tweaking that I did about 10 years ago for my own satisfaction. ...and yes i've got a few copies of the single which I intend to keep safe. I was always hoping that one day the song would get some kind of recognition, so good old Youtube is making it posssible.... Cheers Michael Norton
i spent eight years in australia , always looking for this bloody single , for ever going to phantom records or redeye ''in sydney'' . calling record shops in other states . no joy . this has to be the best posting ever on you tube , many many thanks .
I wondered when this would hit youtube.... I wrote the lyrics and produced this track for the film In Search of Anna back in the 70's....but it isn't exactly the version that was released on the single back in"78. .
I was never satisfied with the mix of the single so I found the lead break from a previous rough mix of the song and laid it over the vinyl mix. I also put a couple of synth fx in just before the solo comes in underneath the tympani, there's also an extended ending just coz, I could

@mikeyblue77 Hi, Mike. You should get in touch with the guys behind the 'Ain't No Saint' boxset, you get no writing credit for this. Regards - Michael.
@MyFavouriteShop thanks for the best posting ever on you tube , is this version from the 7'' or the soundtrack . i see the film is out on dvd , and is available from smart st films in sydney .
Like.... no, so far beyond just "like" it's not true. Absolutely adore this track, which I heard him play live at Brighton Pavilion in about 1980. Had never heard it before and thought at the time he was playing an alternative version of "Small Hours" - so good to be able to listen to this again. And again. Thanks.
As a JM fan here in Oz I am always on lookout for this somewhere..and I have never heard this version..*what a find* !! So, thank you very, very much for this...it's made my day..absolutely. This 'sister' of small hours sees JM starting to shine on electric guitar -and *that voice* anall' . He also did some great live performances of it (eg NY 83). Thanks once again !
@ianmcgeachy You are more than welcome. Like yourself, I adore the music that poured out of this man. First being a Nick Drake fanatic, then finding out that somebody called John Martyn wrote a song about him. I've not looked back, and discovering Richard Thompson, Sandy Denny, and others along the way. Island Records in the 70s - WOW!
