  • Can't wait for #6!!

  • Kings new coach!! Playoffs???????

  • My coach is Daryl Thomas!

  • I came here because of Watfords shot that beat UK. I remember this game very very well. I turned 30 shortly after this. 24 years. It is a wonderful memory. Hopefully, today's hoosiers will make memories like this one. The last 3 years have been tough.

  • IU USED THE SAME PLAY TODAY TO BEAT KENTUCKY!!!! FUCK YEAH IU!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Go IU

  • O my goodness thts awesome.. cant even imagine how nuts bloomington and hoosiers fans will go when they win there 6th banner:)

  • My coach, Daryl Thomas, was the one who passed it to Keith Smart and got the rebound after the free throw! He is really good and funny:)

  • Check out my videos comment on Ball Handling 2 and subscribe. Many famous people such as Sean Kingston, LeBron James, Flo Rida, Fred, and Justin Bieber have watcched my Ball Handling 2 video. It would mean a lot if you commented, liked, and subscribed. Thanks:)

  • Yea, nice shot by Smart. But he has yet to prove himself as a coach, soooo NOT a good coach for the Warriors, not yet at least. And I'm not saying that just because I went to high school with Rony Seikaly. I'm a native San Franciscan, born and raised. I love the Warriors new owners and can't wait for them to return to S.F. Mission Rock Arena...H*ll Yea. Nothing against Oakland, but the area and drive sux after the game. Fans and crowd Amazing.

  • My coach, Daryl Thomas, gave Keith Smart the game winning pass!!!!

  • hated this result to this day...

  • The "Shot" will be remembered forever, Keith Smart will be remembered forever. So long ago now. I remember this vividly. Still gives me goosebumps. Will IU ever return?

  • he is a fantastic coach for the warriors. i really hope they sign him again next year

  • @LilBro925 Uh... are you nuts? Keith Smart is the albatross sinking the Warriors into oblivion.

  • I was a sophomore at IU in '87. What an incredible night!. It just goes to show what basketball is like Indiana (just like Butler in 2010). Great "teams" are more valued than simply great players.

  • THAT'S MY SCHOOL! <3

  • It took Syracuse 16 years but they found that final 4 seconds in New Orleans.

  • My senior year on campus too. I will NEVER forget that game!!

  • I have seen Jordan's game winner from '82 and the Lorenzo Charles/Derek Wittenburg alley oop fiasco in '83, but this was better, and last year's ending was the greatest end to a college basketball game I ever saw. When Butler's last desperation shot went up, I said to myself, "Gene Hackman must be in the stands."

  • Just an FYI, Keith Smart is now the Head Coach of the Golden State Warriors.

  • Kieth smart is my uncle I swaer to living god he is!!!!!

  • @XxJoJoxX211 then y cant u spell his name right....?

  • Keith Smart was MR Clutch in the 87 Tournament

  • umm, can S.U. get 4 seconds back on the clock please. ??

  • @luzzgn8a Well they needed to call there own time out to do it for some reason they waited there own fault very poor job by there coach.

  • I'm so glad im from and live in indiana.

  • i remember this game so well. I was so disappointed when coleman missed the foul shots and smart hit the tough shot. just brutual. but was happy in 2003!!

  • If only Derrick Coleman didn't miss the front end of the one and one

    FUCK IU and Keith Smart

    GO CUSE!!!

  • @SUNSNARE06 And how many championships have you guys one? Oh, that's right, one. How many final fours? 4, oh sorry, we have twice that many. Keep crying loser

  • @kdk8536

At least 'Cuse was relevant the past few years, not a doormat like your once proud program, all of your history is no longer relevant

  • @SUNSNARE06 haha syracuse? are you kidding me?? look at IU's basketball history and look at cuse's history. there is no comparison. plus you prob just came a fan of them just because carmello went there. your a troll.

  • @WhoMadeWho33

No you fuck I'm a student at SU, at least Syracuse has been relevant the past few years, all you guys have is history, the last few years you've been nothing but a doormat and a bottom feeder in the Big Ten

  • He's the head coach of the Golden State Warriors now and I'm watching him get his first win. Ellis and Curry are having monster games.

  • I was an infant when this happened: story goes I was on my dad's lap (a huge Hoosier fan) and burst into tears when he screamed YESS at the drop of the ball in the hoop. Been a Hoosier fan ever since :)

  • Smart also played in the Philippines, with the San Miguel Beermen of the PBA, in the 1989 Reinforced Conference where he played through an injury..

  • Keith Smart is now the head coach of the NBA's Golden State Warriors

  • @cwcooper66 fail. just fail

  • This never gets old!

  • IU WILL hang a 6th title banner and i think it'll happen within' the next five years.

  • One of the greatest sports moments I ever remember. The entire city of Bloomington erupted one collective ROAR

  • beast shot

  • i live in Indiana and im a Hoosier fan and i also have a bunch of friends that are Purdue fans. they always talk crap about how much IU sucks (they wish), when they have no room to talk.IU= 5 Titles PU=0 suck on that.

  • @XxGREEN11xX nice

  • the game that still breaks my heart. :-/

    da relic

  • I remember hearing about this game in my village 2months after it was over. We got the play by play through camel messengers. After word of Smarts shot we didn't know for 2 more weeks that SU didn't call timeout. That was about the time SU players and staff realized they should have called one!

  • Who wears short shots?

Why wasn't the clock reset with 2 or 3 more seconds?

  • Clock ran after made baskets back then, even late in the game

  • gay. clock shoulda been :04

  • I agree, but IU still deserved the win.

  • No it shouldn't. In 1987 the clock didn't stop automatically on a made shot in the last minute the way it does today. It continued to run unless someone called timeout. No one did.

  • Chills everytime

  • Keith Smart Garden City Community College Juco

  • keith smarts son is my best friend i swear to god

  • what a finish to a title game!

  • That was a great, great game. I still remember exactly where I watched it and the people I watched it with like it was yesterday. How I miss the General.

  • Indiana had a never die attitude thats what won the game for them..GO IU

  • @SlatanicG0D syracuse was loaded. but no more then unlv in the final four. indiana was a great balanced machine.

  • actually indiana was in the 2002 national championship after a miracle run

  • They got to the title game in '02 with a decent, if not superstar team, but fell short. Still a good year, though.

  • Superstar team, my ass. Indiana had one guy on that team who went on to the NBA, and that was Jared Jeffries. Maryland was the superstar team, with four future NBA players. Juan Dixon, Steve Blake, Chris Wilcox and Lonny Baxter. Indiana was a #5 seed, and Maryland was seeded #1. It was a miracle run, Corky.

  • I said "decent, if NOT superstar team." I never said they were superstars. You're right, they didn't have the depth that Maryland had. Still, they had enough talent to make that run. And with all the guys that went to the NBA from Maryland, how many are still playing?

  • @EricAKATheBelgianGuy Ha ha....none!

    Jared Jeffries is still playing!

  • @nimbrian ....steve blakes abilities as a point guard got dixon, wilcox, and baxter in the nba.....steve blake was the key

  • i dont know about Dixon, but definitely Wilcox and Baxter

  • anytime any where......hoosier hysterias on its way back...and give crean two more seasons and we'll be back to where we were

  • Please tell me why??? how could you not like Bob Knight and the Hoosiers beating a team with three future first round draft choices???

  • @michaeld5 i bet derrik coleman's championship rebound record still stands.

  • @sneak108 No doubt, he had 19 boards....he was a monster.

  • Major blunder not stopping the clock. Bob knight was over there bitching. dont you dare put time back on that clock. ahh i love the general

  • Syracuse got their four seconds back 16 years later vs Kansas in the same building

  • Is there another coach in the country who doesn't call a timeout with twenty seconds left, who lets his players decide the game with the knowledge he's given them. Knight may be an asshole, but was the best basketball coach in the country from 1975-1987.

  • well, asshole might be an opinion, but you're right on every other count!

  • that was a great game

  • HOOSIERS BABY 5 TIME NATIONAL CHAMPS

  • Yeah, baby. Suck it, Jim Boeheim.

  • Nobody stopped the clock! Nobody stopped the clock! HAHA LOl. This is a classic game one of the best tournament games ever. The lead changed hands so many times and the win was in doubt until the last second. I love games like this. Usually championship games are boring as hell. One team generally dominates.

  • Why didn't Boeheim call a timeout? There were 4 seconds on the clock when Smart hit the shot, but no timeout was called until :01 left. I've never seen an explanation for why there was such a delay.

  • Ha ha. Syracuse with three future first round draft picks couldn't pull it out against the Hoosiers.

Ah well. Boeheim would get his later.

  • this the THE shot. Everyone expected Alford to take it, but Keith Smart goes down in history.

  • i agree especialy if you look at our recruting class for next year

  • i was pushing for Crean at UK!! but instead we got Dizzy Gillispie! we are in trouble!

IU fans are fortunate to have Crean! great coach. his peers, and writers of the Big East always had him at the top!! and that is the top conference in the land! you will be final 4 bound in a just a few short years!

  • Classic Derrick Coleman...choke artist who never lived up to potential

  • thats pretty harsh

  • Who care about the potential. He didn't appeal to cheerleaders, white women, or children like Rodman who had that energy. The game was a job to Derrick and it showed after his freshman year.

  • my dad??

  • It was 23 points. 7 three's and a layup. i dont think he went to the line at all.

  • Here here, Coach Crean23. IU will own the NCAA in a few years.

  • Expect more of this soon, Crean will rebuild the finest program in the nation and we will return to prominence within a short period of time.

  • lets have sex

    18.F here V2

  • jajajajaja S

  • Wonder what happened to Keith Smart...did he make it to the NBA?

  • Yeah, he played two minutes and his only stat was two turnovers

  • @knowitall1975 Keith Smart is now the new Golden State Warriors head coach. He's been groomed as an assistant to take over for Don Nelson when he retired. Looks like Nelson is being forced to retire. Anyways, you can read about it in today's sports pages.

  • @knowitall1975 Coach of Golden State Warriors Now.

  • @knowitall1975 yep, he is now a coach for the golden state warriors and i am just watching him take his team down to the wire against the Memphis grizzlies.

  • @knowitall1975 he the head coach of the golden state warriors

  • @knowitall1975 head coach in the nba

  • @knowitall1975 coaches the warriors now

  • @knowitall1975 He coaches the Golden State Warriors, now.

  • @knowitall1975 he was the assistant coach for the warriors for a few years, now their head coach

  • @knowitall1975 Keith Smart is the head coach of the Golden State Warriors.

  • @knowitall1975 Played semi pro in a number of places, including Canada, the US, and the Phillipines. He's currently the head coach of the Golden State Warriors.

  • what's trippy is hearing the muffled audio, it sounds like going through a tunnel. it's weird that syracuse didn't call timeout that quickly.

  • Great example of one of indianas teams they didnt have great talent but they played together as a team better than anyone in the nation

  • @Daaaaaaaf kinda like Butler's team this year. wish they would've won. :(

  • @Daaaaaaaf

That is a myth. This team was super talented. Alford was Big10 Player of the Year, Dean Garrett was Freshman of the Year, and Daryl Thomas went in the NBA draft. Hardly a team of scrubs.

  • @BobbyDigital4242 Daryl Thomas was technically drafted into the NBA...in the SIXTH round with the 120th pick. He never played in the NBA. Keith Smart played a total of two minutes and his only stat was two turnovers. Their best draft pick was Alford, who was drafted in the second round with the 26th pick overall.

Syracuse had Derrick Coleman (#1 in 1990), Rony Seikaly (#9 in 1988) and Sherman Douglas (#28 in 1989). All obviously had better NBA careers than anybody from Indiana.

  • @jbrumundsmith Yeah, but we got the National Title!

  • @jbrumundsmith Which makes it that more satisfying as a hoosier fan to see Indiana beat S.U.

  • @Daaaaaaaf great point if they had the talent like North Carolina had they probably would have had twice as many championships. IMO Bob Knight was a much better coach than Dean Smith those Indiana teams were classic. Go Big Blue

  • I was a senior at IU and watching that game on t.v. in Bloominton for that game. When Smart hit that shot, you could hear this collective scream all through Bloomington out your window.

The place went nuts for a week.

Syracuse really shouldn't have felt bad. I think a few of their guys had pro careers after that game. None of the guys on that IU championship amounted to anything in the pros.

  • Great leaping ability.

How much more racist can you get. Just say great concentration on the shot.

    ahole Packer

  • ... I think you're being a bit over-sensitive. It's not like only African-Americans can jump high. Packer has always been a subpar announcer if you ask me but that doesn't make him a racist. Especially for a comment like the one you mentioned. The fact that he mentioned a quality in Keith Smart that just happens to also be a stereotype of black people makes him racist? So anytime someone says "Vince Carter has sick hops" that's racist? Quit being so sensitive.

  • they so did not get screwed

  • IMO they did, but they did it to themselves. I like Syracuse, but as much as I hate to admit it, Billy Packer was right- nobody stopped the clock for Syracuse. If they call timeout immediately after Smart's shot, Syracuse has a great chance to win. The Trent Tucker rule regarding tenths of a second wasn't in effect yet, so Syracuse needed a prayer but didn't get it.

  • Ha ha. SU had three draft picks on that team and they still couldn't beat IU. Looks to me like you should blame the coach.

  • Nobody called timeout!!! That says it all. Everyone expected IU to call a TO and Bobby didn't. It was genius. You never call timeout down by 1 with the ball. It gives the Def a chance to setup. I watched this game during HS spring break as an 11 year old. I was shocked at the time that he made it and so was everyone else. That's why no one called timeout for the orangemen. They were in shock.

This is in contrast to Memphis St. BLOWING it this year in the tourney. Bob Knight= Winner.

  • Indiana takes the "'Smart' way out"

  • billy packer is a ACC asshole

  • Amen brother.

  • Man, Billy Packer sucked even in 1987.

  • Amen brother.

  • It was a great shot for Indiana fans but, it seemed to haunt Keith Smart. He spent the entire next year trying to live up to the "Shot" and never could. Steve Alford should have taken that shot. He was the captain, a senior, and god of all that was Indiana basketball. He could have handled the pressure because he had nothing left to prove.

  • i no kieth smart

  • I was 6 rows behind that bucket when he hit that shot..best timme of my life, I was a sr at Indiana that year....what an incredible end to my senior year ! Go Hoosiers, bring back Bobby Knight! and name Assembly Hall after him !

  • who has that ball he threw into the stands i want it !!!!!

  • what a wonderful, wonderful moment...too bad i was only 2 and had no idea what was going on!

  • We will miss you coach Knight- God bless you during your well deserved retirement--anybody who watched Knight School on ESPN saw that you could teach the game like no other....written with a pain in my heart love to you and your family.

  • Smart's shot is was better than Laetners!!!

  • One of the worst days of my life!

  • agreed..... just watching the ball bounce and NOBODY calling timeout.....still hurts. We got 2003 though :)

  • I was a freshman at Willkie... sixth floor. We watched the game in Djbrils' dorm room. Marie Baker, from Zionsville, was there. She was really cute. Sigh...

  • Damn, I was 5 years old and in Bloomington where I've always lived!!!! I can remember this fondly!!!!

  • less than 5% of NCAA teams have ever won even one, IU has won 5...its all context you stupid kentuckian...UK has cheated more than Pete Rose so I would put your teeth back in and shut the F up..lol, your so stupid, the whole is soooo stupid...im so sorry... ;)

  • Yes, my smart. Thank you.

    By the way...

    your = possesive pronoun

    you're= "you are"

  • DAMN that was 20 years ago!

  • I hate Billy Packer, I love this shot

  • I was at this Final Four. I was 13 years old and still have the ticket stubs. My dad and I were way, way up high in the Superdome...the game was a rumor from where we were sitting.

  • Man I love it when Brent musberger foreshadows after coleman missed the freeshot. listen to what he says after coleman misses it. its so awesome.

Jim nance doesn;t hold a candle to Brent Musberger.

CBS screwed up bigtime in my opinion.

The final four is not what it used to be.

  • It was both CBS and Musburger's fault. CBS wanted to cut Musberger's contract. May have been some age discrimination at play (also see Jimmy the Greek, which really was more than his super bowl comments). Musburger wanted an over the top contract, and CBS wasn't gonna bring it!

  • Happy 20th anneversary Keith Smart! This one is for you.

  • Sorry. My mistake.

  • Happy 20th anneversary Keith Smart! This is for you!

  • I'm biased as an IU grad, but this is one of the most underrated NCAA games ever. If you played Villanova-Georgetown, NC State-Houston, Kansas-Oklahoma finals over again 10 times, you'd likely get very different results than what happened the first time. But these two teams might give you this same game seven or eight times with Syracuse winning close sometimes and IU winning a few close ones.

  • Another game that you could play over 10 times and have the losing team winning those 10 times was the UCONN-George Mason Elite 8 game in 2006. UCONN was loaded and played great, but throughout the 2nd Half and overtime, George Mason played arguably the most perfect basketball in a big game since Villanova played the perfect game against Georgetown in 1985.

  • Alfor was open there at the end right before Smart took the shot, for a second. Someone find the whole game and put it on here please. UNLV too. 'Cuse with three future NBAers couldn't stop the Hoosiers, who had only four guys score in the game. Alford, Smart, Garrett, Thomas.

  • the last poster is correct the clock wasnt suppose to stop it always ran back then. As you the see the Syracuse players should have called the TO sooner they seemed to already think the game was over

  • Re billny33's comment: In 1987, the clock did not stop on a made shot with under one minute to go as it does now. That rule change occurred in the early to mid 90s. The timekeep correctly allowed the clock to run until Syracuse called timeout with one second left, and no one got hosed on that play.

  • As an objective observer I have to say, Syracuse was hosed here. Clearly the clock has to stop with 4 seconds left when Smart's clutch shot goes down. To have the referees let it run down to one second with the ball suspended out of bounds on the made basket and nobody fixing the timekeeper error is absolutely cheap with a championship on the line, are you kidding?

  • Incorrect. As Terhune513 accurately said, the clock runs until Syracuse calls timeout. It would've stopped at 3-4 seconds had they called the timeout immediately, but let's not ponder on the result as much as the game result itself. At that point, Syracuse must've been completely demoralized... which is why they called timeout 2-3 seconds late.

  • Unfortunately for us, the clock, by rule back then, ran in college!

  • Unless you've seen the whole game, you miss where Syracuse really did get hosed. Alford's lone two-point basket was a fast break layup off a long Thomas outlet -- which Thomas tossed after he slipped and his feet backpedaled in place. As Boeheim could be seen signalling while the camera followed the pass, that should've been traveling.

  • Doesn't matter. Syracuse, with three future first round draft picks, can't beat IU, who only had four people score..you have to point to the coaching. Hell, Coleman outrebounded the whole IU team! Well hell, Boeheim got his...he just had to wait another decade and a half.

  • You're an ignorant observer too...that was the NCAA rule at the time.

  • Probably one of the greatest endings in collegte basketball i ever seen

  • I think Packer was referring to the fact that no Cuse player stopped the clock with at TO. That's also not Jim Nantz doing PBP...that's Brent Musberger

  • DAMN!!!! F'ing Derrick Coleman.

  • DAMN!!!! F'ing 80's hairstyles!

  • Billy Packer thinks he invented the game.

  • Billy Packer is so anti Indiana. "Nobody stopped the clock! Nobody stopped the clock!!" He can take his ACC and shove it up his

  • My friends and I -- in particular one friend who loves that moment -- always took Packer's shouting about the clock as being not anti-IU, but complete surprise at the brain fart. In 20 years of being around media at games and moments like this, I've seen similar reactions often.

  • Packer's always hated the Big Ten and Bob Knight because RMK's OSU team beat Packer's Wake Forest team in the Final Four in 1962.

  • Yeah, back in 1976, RMK told Packer "where the hell is your ACC now??" when Indiana and Michigan took the floor in the NCAA Final.

Ha ha, suck it Big East.....

  • As a Syracuse fan who can barely look at this clip, I don't think Packer was referring to the refs or the timekeeper. Rather, I think he was commenting on the fact that not one SU player put his hands up for a timeout after the shot went in. I distinctly remembering to myself, "Why isn't anyone trying to call timeout?"

I'm not a Packer fan either (same gripe - he loves the ACC), but I think this was the case here.

  • w00t!!!! Glory days...they should finally be coming back shortly!

  • Go IU!
