I met Steve Alford yesterday at the Omaha airport with his team New Mexico Lobos basketball team that had just lost to Creighton. He was a jerk, I asked him about being the mvp in this game and asked him how many points he scored , I thought it was 26 he said he couldn't remember. I told him he should remember because it was the last time he won anythin g what a jerk!
@knowitall1975 Keith Smart is now the new Golden State Warriors head coach. He's been groomed as an assistant to take over for Don Nelson when he retired. Looks like Nelson is being forced to retire. Anyways, you can read about it in today's sports pages.
@knowitall1975 yep, he is now a coach for the golden state warriors and i am just watching him take his team down to the wire against the Memphis grizzlies.
@knowitall1975 Played semi pro in a number of places, including Canada, the US, and the Phillipines. He's currently the head coach of the Golden State Warriors.
That is a myth. This team was super talented. Alford was Big10 Player of the Year, Dean Garrett was Freshman of the Year, and Daryl Thomas went in the NBA draft. Hardly a team of scrubs.
@BobbyDigital4242 Daryl Thomas was technically drafted into the NBA...in the SIXTH round with the 120th pick. He never played in the NBA. Keith Smart played a total of two minutes and his only stat was two turnovers. Their best draft pick was Alford, who was drafted in the second round with the 26th pick overall.
Syracuse had Derrick Coleman (#1 in 1990), Rony Seikaly (#9 in 1988) and Sherman Douglas (#28 in 1989). All obviously had better NBA careers than anybody from Indiana.
@Daaaaaaaf great point if they had the talent like North Carolina had they probably would have had twice as many championships. IMO Bob Knight was a much better coach than Dean Smith those Indiana teams were classic. Go Big Blue
I was a senior at IU and watching that game on t.v. in Bloominton for that game. When Smart hit that shot, you could hear this collective scream all through Bloomington out your window.
The place went nuts for a week.
Syracuse really shouldn't have felt bad. I think a few of their guys had pro careers after that game. None of the guys on that IU championship amounted to anything in the pros.
... I think you're being a bit over-sensitive. It's not like only African-Americans can jump high. Packer has always been a subpar announcer if you ask me but that doesn't make him a racist. Especially for a comment like the one you mentioned. The fact that he mentioned a quality in Keith Smart that just happens to also be a stereotype of black people makes him racist? So anytime someone says "Vince Carter has sick hops" that's racist? Quit being so sensitive.
IMO they did, but they did it to themselves. I like Syracuse, but as much as I hate to admit it, Billy Packer was right- nobody stopped the clock for Syracuse. If they call timeout immediately after Smart's shot, Syracuse has a great chance to win. The Trent Tucker rule regarding tenths of a second wasn't in effect yet, so Syracuse needed a prayer but didn't get it.
Nobody called timeout!!! That says it all. Everyone expected IU to call a TO and Bobby didn't. It was genius. You never call timeout down by 1 with the ball. It gives the Def a chance to setup. I watched this game during HS spring break as an 11 year old. I was shocked at the time that he made it and so was everyone else. That's why no one called timeout for the orangemen. They were in shock.
This is in contrast to Memphis St. BLOWING it this year in the tourney. Bob Knight= Winner.
It was a great shot for Indiana fans but, it seemed to haunt Keith Smart. He spent the entire next year trying to live up to the "Shot" and never could. Steve Alford should have taken that shot. He was the captain, a senior, and god of all that was Indiana basketball. He could have handled the pressure because he had nothing left to prove.
I was 6 rows behind that bucket when he hit that shot..best timme of my life, I was a sr at Indiana that year....what an incredible end to my senior year ! Go Hoosiers, bring back Bobby Knight! and name Assembly Hall after him !
We will miss you coach Knight- God bless you during your well deserved retirement--anybody who watched Knight School on ESPN saw that you could teach the game like no other....written with a pain in my heart love to you and your family.
I was a freshman at Willkie... sixth floor. We watched the game in Djbrils' dorm room. Marie Baker, from Zionsville, was there. She was really cute. Sigh...
less than 5% of NCAA teams have ever won even one, IU has won 5...its all context you stupid kentuckian...UK has cheated more than Pete Rose so I would put your teeth back in and shut the F up..lol, your so stupid, the whole is soooo stupid...im so sorry... ;)
I was at this Final Four. I was 13 years old and still have the ticket stubs. My dad and I were way, way up high in the Superdome...the game was a rumor from where we were sitting.
It was both CBS and Musburger's fault. CBS wanted to cut Musberger's contract. May have been some age discrimination at play (also see Jimmy the Greek, which really was more than his super bowl comments). Musburger wanted an over the top contract, and CBS wasn't gonna bring it!
I'm biased as an IU grad, but this is one of the most underrated NCAA games ever. If you played Villanova-Georgetown, NC State-Houston, Kansas-Oklahoma finals over again 10 times, you'd likely get very different results than what happened the first time. But these two teams might give you this same game seven or eight times with Syracuse winning close sometimes and IU winning a few close ones.
Another game that you could play over 10 times and have the losing team winning those 10 times was the UCONN-George Mason Elite 8 game in 2006. UCONN was loaded and played great, but throughout the 2nd Half and overtime, George Mason played arguably the most perfect basketball in a big game since Villanova played the perfect game against Georgetown in 1985.
Alfor was open there at the end right before Smart took the shot, for a second. Someone find the whole game and put it on here please. UNLV too. 'Cuse with three future NBAers couldn't stop the Hoosiers, who had only four guys score in the game. Alford, Smart, Garrett, Thomas.
the last poster is correct the clock wasnt suppose to stop it always ran back then. As you the see the Syracuse players should have called the TO sooner they seemed to already think the game was over
Re billny33's comment: In 1987, the clock did not stop on a made shot with under one minute to go as it does now. That rule change occurred in the early to mid 90s. The timekeep correctly allowed the clock to run until Syracuse called timeout with one second left, and no one got hosed on that play.
As an objective observer I have to say, Syracuse was hosed here. Clearly the clock has to stop with 4 seconds left when Smart's clutch shot goes down. To have the referees let it run down to one second with the ball suspended out of bounds on the made basket and nobody fixing the timekeeper error is absolutely cheap with a championship on the line, are you kidding?
Incorrect. As Terhune513 accurately said, the clock runs until Syracuse calls timeout. It would've stopped at 3-4 seconds had they called the timeout immediately, but let's not ponder on the result as much as the game result itself. At that point, Syracuse must've been completely demoralized... which is why they called timeout 2-3 seconds late.
Unless you've seen the whole game, you miss where Syracuse really did get hosed. Alford's lone two-point basket was a fast break layup off a long Thomas outlet -- which Thomas tossed after he slipped and his feet backpedaled in place. As Boeheim could be seen signalling while the camera followed the pass, that should've been traveling.
Doesn't matter. Syracuse, with three future first round draft picks, can't beat IU, who only had four people score..you have to point to the coaching. Hell, Coleman outrebounded the whole IU team! Well hell, Boeheim got his...he just had to wait another decade and a half.
I think Packer was referring to the fact that no Cuse player stopped the clock with at TO. That's also not Jim Nantz doing PBP...that's Brent Musberger
My friends and I -- in particular one friend who loves that moment -- always took Packer's shouting about the clock as being not anti-IU, but complete surprise at the brain fart. In 20 years of being around media at games and moments like this, I've seen similar reactions often.
As a Syracuse fan who can barely look at this clip, I don't think Packer was referring to the refs or the timekeeper. Rather, I think he was commenting on the fact that not one SU player put his hands up for a timeout after the shot went in. I distinctly remembering to myself, "Why isn't anyone trying to call timeout?"
I'm not a Packer fan either (same gripe - he loves the ACC), but I think this was the case here.
Can't wait for #6!!

Wonder what happened to Keith Smart...did he make it to the NBA?
knowitall1975 3 years ago
Yeah, he played two minutes and his only stat was two turnovers
jbrumundsmith 3 years ago 6
@knowitall1975 Keith Smart is now the new Golden State Warriors head coach. He's been groomed as an assistant to take over for Don Nelson when he retired. Looks like Nelson is being forced to retire. Anyways, you can read about it in today's sports pages.

what's trippy is hearing the muffled audio, it sounds like going through a tunnel. it's weird that syracuse didn't call timeout that quickly.

Great example of one of indianas teams they didnt have great talent but they played together as a team better than anyone in the nation
Daaaaaaaf 3 years ago 14
@Daaaaaaaf kinda like Butler's team this year. wish they would've won. :(
XxGREEN11xX 1 year ago
@Daaaaaaaf
That is a myth. This team was super talented. Alford was Big10 Player of the Year, Dean Garrett was Freshman of the Year, and Daryl Thomas went in the NBA draft. Hardly a team of scrubs.
BobbyDigital4242 11 months ago
@BobbyDigital4242 Daryl Thomas was technically drafted into the NBA...in the SIXTH round with the 120th pick. He never played in the NBA. Keith Smart played a total of two minutes and his only stat was two turnovers. Their best draft pick was Alford, who was drafted in the second round with the 26th pick overall.
Syracuse had Derrick Coleman (#1 in 1990), Rony Seikaly (#9 in 1988) and Sherman Douglas (#28 in 1989). All obviously had better NBA careers than anybody from Indiana.
jbrumundsmith 10 months ago
@jbrumundsmith Yeah, but we got the National Title!
bregante1 9 months ago
@jbrumundsmith Which makes it that more satisfying as a hoosier fan to see Indiana beat S.U.
michaeld5 6 months ago
@Daaaaaaaf great point if they had the talent like North Carolina had they probably would have had twice as many championships. IMO Bob Knight was a much better coach than Dean Smith those Indiana teams were classic. Go Big Blue
toddky32 10 months ago
I was a senior at IU and watching that game on t.v. in Bloominton for that game. When Smart hit that shot, you could hear this collective scream all through Bloomington out your window.
The place went nuts for a week.
Syracuse really shouldn't have felt bad. I think a few of their guys had pro careers after that game. None of the guys on that IU championship amounted to anything in the pros.

ahole Packer
montemouse 3 years ago
Quit being so sensitive.

syracuse got screwed
Boltzz 3 years ago
they so did not get screwed
natcheche 3 years ago
IMO they did, but they did it to themselves. I like Syracuse, but as much as I hate to admit it, Billy Packer was right- nobody stopped the clock for Syracuse. If they call timeout immediately after Smart's shot, Syracuse has a great chance to win. The Trent Tucker rule regarding tenths of a second wasn't in effect yet, so Syracuse needed a prayer but didn't get it.
EricAKATheBelgianGuy 3 years ago
Ha ha. SU had three draft picks on that team and they still couldn't beat IU. Looks to me like you should blame the coach.
michaeld5 3 years ago

Man I love it when Brent musberger foreshadows after coleman missed the freeshot. listen to what he says after coleman misses it. its so awesome.
Jim nance doesn;t hold a candle to Brent Musberger.
CBS screwed up bigtime in my opinion.
The final four is not what it used to be.
gichmaster 4 years ago
It was both CBS and Musburger's fault. CBS wanted to cut Musberger's contract. May have been some age discrimination at play (also see Jimmy the Greek, which really was more than his super bowl comments). Musburger wanted an over the top contract, and CBS wasn't gonna bring it!

Happy 20th anneversary Keith Smart! This is for you!
espnfanatic2906 4 years ago
I'm biased as an IU grad, but this is one of the most underrated NCAA games ever. If you played Villanova-Georgetown, NC State-Houston, Kansas-Oklahoma finals over again 10 times, you'd likely get very different results than what happened the first time. But these two teams might give you this same game seven or eight times with Syracuse winning close sometimes and IU winning a few close ones.
schmoop14 4 years ago
Another game that you could play over 10 times and have the losing team winning those 10 times was the UCONN-George Mason Elite 8 game in 2006. UCONN was loaded and played great, but throughout the 2nd Half and overtime, George Mason played arguably the most perfect basketball in a big game since Villanova played the perfect game against Georgetown in 1985.
gymman1031 4 years ago
Alfor was open there at the end right before Smart took the shot, for a second. Someone find the whole game and put it on here please. UNLV too. 'Cuse with three future NBAers couldn't stop the Hoosiers, who had only four guys score in the game. Alford, Smart, Garrett, Thomas.
michaeld5 4 years ago
the last poster is correct the clock wasnt suppose to stop it always ran back then. As you the see the Syracuse players should have called the TO sooner they seemed to already think the game was over
d84martin 4 years ago
Re billny33's comment: In 1987, the clock did not stop on a made shot with under one minute to go as it does now. That rule change occurred in the early to mid 90s. The timekeep correctly allowed the clock to run until Syracuse called timeout with one second left, and no one got hosed on that play.
Terhune513 4 years ago
As an objective observer I have to say, Syracuse was hosed here. Clearly the clock has to stop with 4 seconds left when Smart's clutch shot goes down. To have the referees let it run down to one second with the ball suspended out of bounds on the made basket and nobody fixing the timekeeper error is absolutely cheap with a championship on the line, are you kidding?
billny33 5 years ago
PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD 4 years ago
Unfortunately for us, the clock, by rule back then, ran in college!
scatman44 4 years ago
Unless you've seen the whole game, you miss where Syracuse really did get hosed. Alford's lone two-point basket was a fast break layup off a long Thomas outlet -- which Thomas tossed after he slipped and his feet backpedaled in place. As Boeheim could be seen signalling while the camera followed the pass, that should've been traveling.
schmoop14 4 years ago
Doesn't matter. Syracuse, with three future first round draft picks, can't beat IU, who only had four people score..you have to point to the coaching. Hell, Coleman outrebounded the whole IU team! Well hell, Boeheim got his...he just had to wait another decade and a half.
michaeld5 4 years ago
You're an ignorant observer too...that was the NCAA rule at the time.

Billy Packer is so anti Indiana. "Nobody stopped the clock! Nobody stopped the clock!!" He can take his ACC and shove it up his
proudhoosier26 5 years ago 3
My friends and I -- in particular one friend who loves that moment -- always took Packer's shouting about the clock as being not anti-IU, but complete surprise at the brain fart. In 20 years of being around media at games and moments like this, I've seen similar reactions often.
schmoop14 4 years ago
Packer's always hated the Big Ten and Bob Knight because RMK's OSU team beat Packer's Wake Forest team in the Final Four in 1962.
DoinkTheClown 2 years ago 3
Yeah, back in 1976, RMK told Packer "where the hell is your ACC now??" when Indiana and Michigan took the floor in the NCAA Final.
Ha ha, suck it Big East.....
michaeld5 2 years ago
As a Syracuse fan who can barely look at this clip, I don't think Packer was referring to the refs or the timekeeper. Rather, I think he was commenting on the fact that not one SU player put his hands up for a timeout after the shot went in. I distinctly remembering to myself, "Why isn't anyone trying to call timeout?"
I'm not a Packer fan either (same gripe - he loves the ACC), but I think this was the case here.
