at work we had to demo some old tv's that didnt work and from a distance they sounded like straight gun shots haha. one we used a sledge hammer and the other a lead pipe... in all we found the pipe makes a much better noise

I think it implodes, because the tube contains a vacuum and as you break the glass the air rushes to fill the vacuum creating the implosion. You should try doing it when the TV is turned on :D

No, not "nice work", LCDs and Plasmas are not implode, and not produce ANY thrilling sounds... Smashing a plasma tv is absolutely vacant, it can't do anything spectacular. Crash working LCDs are more funny till the backlight intact, the broken screen can do very stange phenomenon when pushed, etc. So please DO NOT crash any plasmas, and any big LCDs (max. an old 15" LCD monitor), because my heart will break too :'-( ...
