Doug Hopkins had problems but he never got the credit he deserved. The band fucked him over pretty hard on the New Miserable Experience album. He wrote most of those songs and got fired and not paid or credited for them and that's why he killed himself. Do a little research before you dislike this comment.
"you can't put any rules on skateboarding. now excuse me man im gonna go skate", as robin put it today at the park man. now excuse me, im gonna go skate
God, I was 1 or 2 years old, depending on when in the year this was taken! Excellent quality for a 22 year old video. I love how he's got longer hair, wish I had been old enough then to know anything. I found a new copy of Dusted at a local record store, it has mostly earlier recordings of songs from their short album Up and Crumbling and their breakthrough New Miserable Experience, the latter of which starts, like Dusted, with Lost Horizons - a masterpiece.
Wow. What a trip. I've recently become a fan of Gin Blossoms so I've been learning so much about them. I've seen them twice and Robin and the band put on a great show. This old piece is very funny. It reminds me of the eighties. Cassettes???!!! lol
This was several years before the Blossoms got a recording contract. In '93 or '94 (or abouts) I was on my sailboat half listening to the radio when a song came on. I didn't really start listening until the part, "only in my head", but thought, WTF! I've never heard anything with that kind of sound!
I found the name of the band, and went out the next day and bought the CD... New Miserable Experience.
i love the gins and have enjoyed them at live shows; BUT....robin doesnt show doug any credit or respect for his contributions that made them a success!! then the poor soul killed himself for his reasons between him and God.
@joyceannpumpkin That's often times how it goes in a band. You have one guy whom everything seems to hinge on, and he winds up becoming the "symptom carrier", where it's like everything that isn't going right is his fault. I have been in that role myself.
Bear in mind that this is before Doug killed himself, and before they were successful. Young rockers are in a race against the clock, and don't have the wisdom or the foresight in these matters to sound very noble in retrospect.

At 3:25 Robin says that Doug's songs from the album were written in 1987!
No wonder 6 years later he was so miserable watching the other guys make it big off of him.

Wow! at 3:25 Robin says most of the songs are Doug's from 2 years ago, which puts that at 1987 when he wrote them.
It took until about 1993 for the songs to get their just due when finally everyone in the country got to enjoy Doug's songs!
That's 6 years later. I can't imagine how agonizing it must've been for him, especially watching other people make it big off of him.

@larrymyclown Well Doug was there recording New Miserable Experience but was a bad alchaholic so they fired him.
