  • Splendid! I wish the age of steam would return...

  • I expect as there are so many comments somebody else has noted Mallard with KGV-at 3.00. KGV would have been withdrawn but had been rolled out of the shed for the occasion. Is the absence of any slipping because it was Western men on the footplate?

  • @NickRatnieks Great Western Locos Dont Slip

  • @burnley5960 Obviously you haven't seen 6024 up hatton bank then!

  • In the end... she was just another A4 to the engine men of BR...

  • Beautiful sound of the A4 whistle

  • I know I am committing heresy by saying this, but to my American ears that whistle sounds awful

  • l was born then in 1963 good video thanks for putting it on

  • what a beautiful beast .. hissing, roaring, snorting

a wonderful era for rail transport gone foreever

  • Good to see this engine at work (as she should be again!).

  • I like the sound of Mallard's whistle.

  • 0:25 that sounded like an american whistle

  • It's amazing, isn't it? A big express engine, and she's making it look absolutely effortless, as if saying, "Come on then, this is too easy!"

  • Did you film this?

  • @Dinosorable Unfortunately not!

  • @Quarkman0 Oh.

  • Tomlan, sounds like 3/4 time to me, what's your problem? I Kenta, not one of these type, THIS one. Google is your friend.

  • squaaaak!

  • The whistle reminds me of the 5-chimes Burlington had.

  • What happened to Mallards Tender, was it Scrapped?

  • No they just removed the corridor...

  • Bristol Temple Meads - Sunday 17th March 1963. I was a ten year old lad in the crowd that morning!

  • You were very lucky, I wasn't born for another 20 years! I'd give anything to have experienced Temple Meads in the days of steam...

  • Gotta say it ! This is really fine stuff !

  • My Grandad was a stoker/fireman on "The Mallard" He was the steam raiser on the day it broke the speed record.

  • It's not "The Mallard", mate. It's just "Mallard".

  • @MrEgeJones i'm jealouse

  • Very nice video and a portrait of British Railways as they were before modernisation and the disappearance of most freight really kicked in. I liked the boy in the navy blue gabardine raincoat; they were ubiquitous at that time!

  • It's interesting to see just how neat and organised it all appears. No rubbish or weeds, and the tracks showing signs of use, rather than disrepair.

How we've managed to muck up our railways to the extent we have I will never understand.

What a good job government spending on transport is being cut so we can fight the Afgans..oh..wait...

  • She certainly looks a thoroughbred - she moves so effortlessly !

  • Funny how there were nostalgic events like this going on when the southern region were still using the Battle of Britain's for their expresses.

  • yes it changed to br green not sure what month though but it's a beautiful machine but it looks much more better with the valencers and in garter blue

  • when mallard turned to br it changed couler?

  • Wonderful video! Thoroughly enjoyable, great to see the prestigious engine around the South West. I live in Bath, and seeing Newton St Loe as one of the shots was just terrific. Not quite the same these days, although it is great seeing A4s in the area, memorably Bittern back in December.

  • question: why is the number on the mallard 60022? I though its 4468.

  • Because 60022 is her british railways number and 4468 is her LNER Number.

  • cool thanks, thought thats what it was.

  • Yes but 60022 is based on the Mallard's LNER WW2 number of 22.

  • Thanks for the info :D

  • when the railways all became british rail, the numbers were changed the mallard was 022, the flying scotsman changed too from 4472 to 103. all the LNER locomotives were prefixed with 60. so they were 60022 nd 60103.

  • Fabulous footage, thanks for posting.

  • not bad for a kettle,good footage

  • Priceless footage - thanks for sharing it.

  • Professional quality filming makes such a difference. Amateurs please notice - zero zoom and no 2 way panning.

  • very cool

  • An absolutely brilliant piece of video..thanks for posting it

  • Look,it´s Spencer,the sliver engine!....

  • Yes, Mallard did indeed reach 126mph a record which has never been beaten - BUT - The 9F 2-10-0 was, in my humble opinion, the greatest of them all. On any given day any one of the 250 9F's could achieve over 90mph. With 5 foot drivers the piston and rotational speeds were equivalent to those of Mallard on her record run. She only did that speed once - the 9F, 90mph on any given day. How sad their life span was so short.

  • One of this type hit the world speed record, right?

  • I think you might be referring to one of my uploaded clips called "Silver Jubilee" Record Run. Have a look anyway!

  • I just have. Splendid archive. I love England. All the people I met were very good to me. England has many things to be very proud of. Long Live the Queen!

  • he is right. In 1938, Mallard broke the world steam engine speed record of 126 MPH and this record has never been beaten

  • Splendid record indeed. I think someone should ressurect it for tourism.

A whole region in Edwardian England, something like that.

  • 125 actually,been proved,plus never the same after

  • what do you mean proved?

  • That is amazing about 9Fs! i never knew that.

  • @Kenta19191919 It was this loco, 126mph about that.

  • @dmanlewis

    I see. Thanks.

  • @Kenta19191919 yes it ran 203kph

  • @Kenta19191919 Yeah, this one...Mallard. 126mph.

  • @Kenta19191919 yes the one in this video only that was when she was under lner ownership this was taken 30 years later when she was under BR ownership

    she reached 126.5 mph

she has been repainted to lner garter blue

  • @Kenta19191919 - this is the actual loco that holds the world speed record for steam traction...126 mph back in 1938. It is now located in the NRM at York.

  • @john1801rambo

How wonderful. I hope the Museum will prosper! I hear that there are many cuts being made by the new government in this time of national stringency. It is unavoidable. Nevertheless I wish them good luck.

  • @Kenta19191919

    This loco holds the record.

  • @Kenta19191919 I know this is 2 years after your orginal quiestion but yes "Mallard" holds the world speed record for a steam locomotive of 126MPH,

  • @Kenta19191919 This is the Record Holder In Person

  • Great to see all and sundry on the tracks to photo this. this is how it should be on low speed lines in my view! :-))))

  • Does anyone think it looks rather like a model on a particularly good layout of Temple Meads at 1:27-36 secs?

  • listen up in around 3 weeks on about 12th of july mallard, bitterrn, union of south africa and sir nigel gresley will be coming together at york for 1 day only for a special tribute

  • Hey, yesterday i was on a train going to harrogate and saw at the Railway Museum was "union of south africa" in a workshop, wiht its funnel in some kind of venting system, linked to funnels on the roof of the workshop, and it was steaming!

    Looked very nice.

  • yh its been there since 5th of juky when it broke down coming back from edinburgh so probably going out back to base or waiting to pull another charter

  • Good footage!

  • i bet many of these ran around the living room carpet during the sixties, or on the dining table before dad came in from work !

  • Hoping to have seen a glimpse of hydraulic locs there.....Westbury in 1963

  • nice footage and doesnt everyone think it was awful what British Railway did to all the locos like the A4s and A3s and A1s

  • Excellent historical footage. An absolute treasure.

  • 1 month before withdrawn from service? So must have been shot in December 1963. Wow, priceless footage. Thanks for sharing!

  • Excellent stuff, and a nice crimson/cream Mk1 in the sidings at Westbury in 1963.

  • Valuable footage - enthralling! Thanks.

  • Is that King George V adjacent to Mallard at 3:00? The american bell on the running plate is present, so I think it could be.

  • It is 6000 King George V

  • this was on the hornby advertisment for there new 00 live steam mallard models a few years ago

  • Not only was it pinched from a DVD but the sound has been dubbed. Count the beats to the wheel revolutions - only 4 and should be six!

  • OK Tom, while I'll admit that it was copied from a DVD (for everyone's viewing pleasure!), the soundtrack is the original - overdubbed or not! :)

  • rarh thats pretty clever to detect that

  • Ahhh this was pinched from a DVD! British Steam Locomotives!

  • OK guv! It's a fair cop!

  • Can't fool me!

  • Is "British Steam Locomotives" the DVD title? I can't seem to find it for sale anywhere!

  • Terrific video... many thanks for posting it.

  • Great Vid thanks =) nice work

  • Wit steam leaking from her she didnt seem in that good nick. Nice video.

  • those were the days

  • this old girl managed over 200kph in her day for steam thats fast !!

  • I liked her in LNER blue. BTW her original umber was 4468. Did the whistle have a cord or was it blown by itself?

  • The whistle was operated by rods from a lever in the cab.

  • Great thing is; 126mph, runs on....

    water, no less.

  • Magnificent. Amazing scenes. I'm a diesel fan but this is incredible. Thanks so much.

  • A rare thing - Streak passing lower quad. signals. Fabulous beastie eh? Thanks...

  • Pure Magic, thanks.

  • Excellent footage. A treasure.

  • Thanks very much, a glorious sight!
