It's never to late to go from one OS to another, I messed my computer up with a partition manager... got Ubuntu after that. Also "I need a computer to go back to school." She has a computer... and that stuff with open office, it's pretty much the same. Either way, you can always buy and install windows.

On Microsoft Word "incompatibility", OpenOffice is flawlessly compatible with anything in the Microsoft Office Suite. That's kind of the whole point of it.

UBUNTU forks just fine, way much better than windows. It is compatible with hudge number of hardware and if it has no drivers for one LAN adapter, that does not make it "useless". Even then it is possible to make LAN and Internet works, but not by miss "Low IQ" from this video.
When you install clean copy of windows, is your computer all setup and ready for use? NO! Without drivers on CD-s that come with hardware, your win is useless and you can't do almost nothing :D zero points

If you have a live ethernet connection Ubuntu "just works", and since it was pre-installed by Dell on her Dell notebook with wireless, that's a guarantee that wireless "just works" as well. Find a wireless hot spot and use it. And she never called her ISP.

Dell should have offered a sol by at least telling to contact her ISP. Dell doesn't shove Linux down anyone's throat. If you look at their website what you'll find is, if anything, you'll have Windows Vista shoved down your throat. Its pretty hard to buy a Dell notebook with Ubuntu on it by accident. You have to be actually looking for it.

It took me a week to fix an internet with linux coz of a bug in linux kernel. I've had to patch source code to compile drivers. I'ved compiled a driver 4 my webcam only 4 it to barely work. I've had distros default to wrong screen res, I've to config sound both these issuse unrelated to drivers. Basically every distro I've tried i had 2 fix i.e linux fails miserably!

1) Ubuntu is very user friendly. I dove in with zero linux experience and have only ever encountered minor problems.
2)Open Office is fully compatible with Word. It can open word documents, save to Microsoft formats, ect. I don't understand why it would be a problem.

UBUNTU forks just fine, way much better than windows. It is compatible with hudge number of hardware and if it has no drivers for one LAN adapter, that does not make it "useless". Even then it is possible to make LAN and Internet works, but not by miss "Low IQ" from this video.

I'm sorry but Linux fails. It failed for the poor girl who bought the laptop ( paid 4 a p.o.s that was useless ). It failed to connect to the internet. It failed to do even the most basic of things i.e word processing. I'd say that's a pretty big fail!

If you have a live ethernet connection Ubuntu "just works", and since it was pre-installed by Dell on her Dell notebook with wireless, that's a guarantee that wireless "just works" as well. Find a wireless hot spot and use it. And she never called her ISP.

Dell doesn't shove Linux down anyone's throat. If you look at their website what you'll find is, if anything, you'll have Windows Vista shoved down your throat. Its pretty hard to buy a Dell notebook with Ubuntu on it by accident. You have to be actually looking for it.
That is one reason this story is suspicious in the first place.
You don't know what kind of set up she had with Verizon. She might have had a USB modem, in which case she needs to call Verizon for support. She didn't.

It came with OpenOffice PRE-INSTALLED ! It did not fail to do word processing.
MATC have confirmed they only wanted documents submitted in .doc format, which she can do just fine with OpenOffice. She couldn't figure out how to "save as" and choose .doc as the format ? FAIL.

It took me a week to fix an internet with linux coz of a bug in linux kernel. I've had to patch source code to compile drivers. I'ved compiled a driver 4 my webcam only 4 it to barely work. I've had distros default to wrong screen res, I've to config sound both these issuse unrelated to drivers. Basically every distro I've tried i had 2 fix i.e linux fails miserably!

You don't need to be a computer geek to have enough brains to call Verizon and get help. You don't need to be a computer geek to find out from her college that they only wanted .doc files and not for her to use Microsoft Word specifically. OpenOffice WILL save her documents in .doc and is fine for all her needs.
But you do have to be mind numbingly stupid not to even ask someone for help (and she would have found out that there was nothing stopping her doing what she needed).
