I was a young rock and blues player in the early seventies. Green, Clapton, Zappa, Hendrix, Beck, Muddy Waters, and then I heard Steve Howe live. It was the first time I'd heard of Yes. It was an instant eye opener for me. Virtuosic music played by virtuoso's. It changed things for me. I started listening to Grant Green, George Benson, Gabor Szabo. From there I found classical guitar.. All because of Steve and Yes. Bless the great Steve Howe and bless Yes!
Every time I hear a Yes song, especially live, I an once again reminded why Yes is one of my favorite bands and Steve Howe one of my favorite guitarists...all of them are genius.....
Real Musicians Playing Real Music. Much modern music is good and beautiful in it's own rite, however, Classic Porgressive like this is unmistaeable and near un-reproducable. You can tell the musicians are classicly trained. I was a preteen when I started listening to Yes, Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple and on and on. I Am Grateful these people chose to share their art with me. It has enriched my life beyond words.
"Who is that on guitar" Eeh gads, people don't even know who it is! Steve Howe, five times voted "Best Overall Guitarist" - Guitar Player magazine, and Hall of Fame entry.
@locksmithite "Very underrated band" - My whole life, it seems, I've been making this argument with people who keep insisting "Yes isn't good music." With age I've come to realize their are people who "get" Yes, and people who just don't. We are the minority, but the smart ones! And we were right about Yes, as time has proven. But because they don't play "dance music" most people just don't like it or get it. Listening to Yes is about LISTENING to Yes, not dancing. I wish people understood
I saw these guys in Philly in '81. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. Good times. They were on a rotating stage and we were doing whippet balloons.
Tempis fuget, though. They still have the sound, but the energy doesn't seem to be there. It 's been 30 years. Great band, though. Forever great.
@TheNucleusAlbum1968 Whoa man, why are you hating on Rush? I love Yes and Rush and its ridiculous to compare the two the way you're doing. Both groups are great in their musicianship and songwriting, but totally different stylistically. Try to keep an open mind; even if you don't like something it doesn't mean its bad. Maybe instead of hating on a completely different band you can share something constructive or not at all.
less than 100.000 views is criminal .. this is a great tune ..with so few views they are seriously underated... YES are superb.. thanks for the post...
I been a huge Yes fan what I've always liked about Yes is while growing up in the 80's we had all the hair bands honestly it's always been the same 2-3 versuses, chorus, guitar solo and the song ending repeating the chorus. I think Yes was always very inovative they use to put out 10-15 minute songs never bothered them there lack of air play on radio stations. I do agree very underated and to this day I still enjoy hearing there music
I remember the Movie with "maybe" the first movie that Tom Cruise was "recognized" in The Legend...Love that movie & loved the music by YES..that is when I was very intrigued with this band.
1:37 and in 2:26 he says," Send an instant comment to me,
Initial it with loving care!..... in 1971 there were NOT instant comments that you could send what was he talking about!!!!! i've always wondered that!!! some help with this! it he telling the future?
I am so old that I can honestly say that I saw them at the Finsbury Park Apollo back in 1974. The set was Close to The Edge followed by Tales from Topographic Oceans.
Listening to this just now brought back some brilliant memories.
I saw this live in Vancouver, shortly after the original release... they were the OPENING BAND! :-) i remember thinking ''holy shit... how can anyone top that!!?''
... then Jethro Tull came on... and topped it!! what a show that was.... whatever happened to Ian Anderson? ... 'guitartech' ...there actually use to be a lot of intelligent bands.... then people started thinking cocaine was cool, and that was the end of the psychedelic age ...always loved Squire's stereo bass sound
Does anyone know what kind of guitar Steve uses for the first half of this song? It doesn't quite look like a mandolin... and it doesn't sound quite like a 12 string.
@kevinkgillette Actually I looked it up, and it's a 12-string lute tuned to open E (EBEG#Be). And the main part is 3 different chord shapes: 000000, 020100, and 040300. For anybody who wishes to play it on their own guitar. :-)
I've always been amazed that YES ever took off at all. The masses are generally not that bright, so I figured they would have fallen by the wayside. Guess the jokes on me. WHAT A GREAT FRIGGEN BAND
The original Yes line-up was Jon Anderson (vocals), Chris Squire (bass), Bill Bruford (drums), Tony Kaye (keys) and Peter Banks (guitar). First out and replaced, after two albums, was Peter Banks, replaced by Howe on The Yes Album. Next out was Kaye, after The Yes Album, replaced by Wakeman on Fragile. Next out was Bruford, after Close To The Edge, replaced by White on Tales from Topographic Oceans. This video is of that line-up that first played together on Topographic Oceans.
Therefore, this video is actually less than half of the original line-up. The only founding members of the group on this video are Anderson and Squire.
Thanks for the comprehensive explanation. I have always loved YES and similar for lack of a better term "prog rock music". I remember the first three albums and nobody sounded like them in the least way. Again thank you and Regards, jldrury
This is the strongest lineup. Wakeman is the best keyboardist yes ever had by far, and howe the best guitarist. not the original, but the lineup that did fragile yes, the album that put them on the map.
Boy that is nice job done live..after how many years 32+ As one user below noted .. Anderson still has that tenor voice intact Not too many bands [if any? from that era] could reproduce their music after 3 decades so tightly and so much like the original studio recording !! Great .. thanks for the post!
@lpvcrcd It is amazing, I love Yes. As for bands that are still really tight, Rush is another one. 36 years as a band, I just saw them in September and they're just as solid as ever.
@lpvcrcd Yeah, you are right on except the actual age of this original track.....more like 39 years. Anyway, I was a big Yes fan when I was in high school back in 1977.
Completely agree. I got this concert on HDDVD and it's one of the best live concerts I've ever seen. Hell, I was born in '94 and I love them more than 95% of stuff these days
@locksmithite really? I think they got all the possible recognitions either individual or band-wise and if they tour today the hall will be just as full as this one in 03 for sure ; )
