  • I have an old Daewoo VCR which will play a cassette, but no picture is displayed Ive tryed every method of troubleshooting I know of, (change the cables/ channel on the VCR and TV).

I know the tape is playing, but nothing is being either displayed nor can I hear anything. Can you help me?

  • how to fix a vcr right as soon as i put the vhs into the vcr it automatically ejects the tape? can you tell me how to fix it?

  • ..... on, the "big wheel" in the center area spinns up and whirrs for about 5-7 seconds than gives up and slowly comes to a stop. i have got lots of old movies i would love to enjoy, but i cant becuase of this problem. if you need a video showing its problems in action, i can make it as soon as possible.

  • okay, so i have this sony video cassete SLV-679HF its real old like from the 80's or 90's im not sure, but if you try to put a VHS into the place a VHS goes, it doesnt make any noise or use any motors, but it rejects it as if a powerful spring is pushing against the vhs. i have tried many vhss and it has not solved it. i call it being "stuck in eject mode". and you cant do anything with it none of the play/stop/rewind/f-f or the eject button do anything. also, when you turn it off, then back....

  • i always wondered what the big drum was till i saw this also what would you recomend cleaning the heads with besides alcohol

  • I have a RCA Selectavision from the late 70's/ early 80's. It doesn't load the tape. The guides won't move, so the video head can't read the tape.

  • Hey Hakemon, I've got no sound on my hitachi M920E! I think it was once burnt when lightning struck our house, i guess the power supply had been replaced but don't see any other fried components or loose cables..

  • My mini dv vcr will not take the tape. It's almost like it's dead but not entirely because the head spins and some of the gears move when I turn it on.

  • My vcr shuts off when I press the record button. I record a lot of t.v. Shows so what could I do to fix it? Besides throwing it away of course.

  • The front of this vcr looks like a pv 1231

  • Hi there. I wonder if you're still checking these...

So, I want to make a VCR tape loop. Could you demonstrate one, explain how one works, or point me in the right direction to figure that stuff out?

  • this may seem like a stupid question but what is actually reading the video signal?

And how is that signal sent out?

  • hi man ,i have a problem . i cant turn my VCR on, last time i used it was 1 or 2 years ago ,now when i plug in the power cable the power button is not turning red like it supposed to do. please help me out - thx

  • @yourdickson4 The starting capacitors in the power supply unit will have gone out of specification and so won't work - resulting in not switching on.

Or it could be the fuse in the plug head, though I don't know if plug heads in Madagascar have fuses! :P

  • Here's one for you. I have a tape so old the player can't tell anymore if its short play or long play. The recording is LP but plays in SP making the tape recording sound like chipmunks! How can i ''adjust'' the player to slow down so i can transfer it to another tape or DVD?

  • @morrismagic08 You can't. That's that. You'll need a more recent VCR, as adjusting this VCR will involve getting into its software - if it's something that old, then forget about it! i doubt whether one of the computers that were used to program it will still be around.

This is why I use two VCRs, my oldest one (an early HiFi model, a Ferguson Videostar 3V48 - a rebadge of a JVC thing) doesn't have LP playback but has by far the best picture. My other one, a Panasonic NV-F55, does.

  • @AidanLunn It's the edge of my tape that's damaged. It was recorded in LP but switches to SP intermittently in my sony SLV-E70. I know the older SP only recorders can't be adjusted i just need to trick the audio head in to playing LP only which is something i've never done.

  • @morrismagic08 It's the pinch roller that's going hard and shiny. It can't keep grip of the tape, so the tape slips downwards, damaging the edsge of the tape.

You can't "trick" it into playing LP. The motors won't be able to spin at the different speeds required for LP.

  • Nice video i understand generally how VCR works...I have a question.

I have Toshiba DV-80W from my father. I try to use it after 2-3 years. The problem is that when i press the play button, the mechanics stretch the tape as in your video around the drum and the other roller, show a frame to tv, and in 1 second stops, as if i had press the stop button.

It fill like it cannot holp the tape in play status....

I don't know if you can figure out what maybe it is, but i would appreciate any answer.

  • @giraios Probably the idler not turning one tape roll.

  • haha i found from a suggested video that my capstand bearing is bad.

  • hey i have a white westing house from the 90s im gussing it is hi fi and it works perfectly except that when you press eject it makes a loud screeching noise and unless you give it help it will not raise the tape. i rotated the thingy that ejects it by hand and it appers to try to move an adjacent peice but fails. any help would be great. also is there a way to record vcrs on to dvd?

  • @Awesomeman1987 1) Sounds like it's a belt for the eject mechanism. 2) use a DVD recorder.

  • Hi I have a brand new never used national nv-730 vcr,i plugged the vcr in and it powers on for 3 seconds and then it turns off ,ould you please advise me what could be wrong with it.Its a new 1980s vcr which has been stored for 30 years..cheers

  • @olgag2011 Belts and idler. these are rubber components that go stiff, brittle and break after many years storage.

  • My VCR ejects the tapes... I put the tape in and it just dosen't play it and ejects it!!! Please tell me what I can do because I can't stand having a bunch of Videos and not being able to see them because I don't know what's going on!!!

  • my vcr is stalling a bit. the rollers which turns the tape is dragging a bit at times. i've not used it to much and it's in pretty good condition as i bought it brand new from the shops.. due to this the picture goes fuzzy and the sound slows down.. fast forwards and rewind are both fine. any idea what is causing and how i can repair it?? thanks..

  • my vcr isnt accepting tapes... its a fairly 'new' model

like one made in the late 90's id guess

i turn the power on, the vcr wont let me do anything for about 15 sec then turns off automatically, and if i try to put a tape in it just wont go, unless the power is off then i can force it?? like that helps, and when i turn the power back on it ejects the tape and locks again so you cant feed a tape in

it a front loader machine, im not aware of anything else outside of the 80s tho

  • While i was rewinding a tape in my vcr, it made a weird sound like something rubbing against something. when i went to play back the tape, the audio exhibited excessive static which it did not before. i could use some help with this

  • Tape scraped inside of cassette during rewind on post-2000 make hitachi fx hifi vcr. caused massive damage to

audio track (static) is it vcr or tape that has problem?

  • clear video, good sound, good info. thanks

  • Hey Hakemon, I've got an RCA VR327 from the late '90s. The problem started when it ate a libr

  • @Saturday8pm You didn't state what the problem is.

  • YOWZA ... didn't know you're a fellow night owl! Sorry 'bout that, I think my initial post was too long, and kept getting errors. I'll post this problem in pieces. Attempt #2!

  • I've got an RCA VR327 from the late '90s. The problem started when it ate a library video and I had to pull it out. Now, it will accept a tape, the head rotates, but the tape doesn't advance, so the VCR powers down.

  • 2) When I try to RW or FF, it behaves the exact same way, and powers down. The sensors seem to work, the idler mechanism seems OK, the pinch roller doesn't seem worn, the capistan OK. The tape is tight but won't advance as the head spins. I've tested it with the cover on and off.

  • 3) I've not opened it so deep as to see all moving parts. I've got it connected to the TV now to see if it has any advanced settings such as Parental Controls keeping it in a locked state. This VCR is basic, so there's none of that.

  • 4) I tried diagnosing this six years ago, gave up and put the VCR in storage. Pulled it out today for another shot. Thanks in advance, S8pm. ( PS: Also realized tonight a MOUSE nested in it, but he didn't seem to do further damage, LOL!!! )

  • @Saturday8pm To be honest, this is usually the classic symptom of a worn belt. But since you say late 90's, and an RCA (which aren't very good to begin with), it honestly sounds like a weak capstan motor.. On these gear-driven VCR's, that usually happens.. They just, get weak, yet the capstan in the belt driven units dont have these issues.

  • Hakemon, thanks for the diagnosis. I'm assuming that meddling to pull chewn tapes can mess up that motor, 'cuz I probably had to extract it with the unit on, therefore pulling while it was pushing. It's probably just as well, since we last touched base, I took off the loading "dock" and managed to misalign it. The gears ground; even though most gears still are aligned, a tape will no longer seat without help, so I broke it again.

  • This is not a total loss. Though I wanted to revive it for its pre-Macrovision powers, it still can be used to get cable channels for an analog TV. Think I'll sew it back up and connect it. Thanks again for the diagnosis, greatly appreciated!

  • hi, i have a panasonic dvd/vcr combo and the vcr player is not working again. i put in vhs tape, it takes it in, i press play and it makes a sound like its trying to play but it doesnt. it seems like something doesnt advance? there are no numbers running on the screen, no error messages. it just makes a sound while its trying to play but never does. then when i press eject, it ejects with no problem. . i have already tried to run the tape cleaner and that doesnt play either. please help!

  • I have a Toshiba TV/VCR combo but i put in a video tape and it won't play or eject the tape and if i press eject it shows the eject sign but does not eject the tape

sape thing with the play button i press play but nothing happens

please help whats wrong with it

  • @micajoeh It's possibly a worn belt and/or motor.

  • I'm Scott. I have an RCA home Theater VCR that will not retract the tape. The idler is not a tire but a gear. How do I repair this? I'm trying to get access to the underside but I can't. Nor can see what's holding the metal frame in the case. I'm not sure how I will see your response so you could email me at poiupoiu0987@yahoo.ca

  • I've seen incandescent lamps used with tape end sensor systems.

  • But like. how does it go from the tape to the tv. and where does th sound come from? im confused.

  • i have a video cassette stuck in my vcr and it wont eject. it almost does but then it just goes back in. ive opened it all up but cant see how to remove it without damaging the vcr. not to worried about the cassette. help.

  • I have a problem with my VCR, it is a 2005 model DVD/VCR combo, it works good for the most part, except when I rewind during playback, it works fine until I go to play the tape again or press stop, when that happens the picture gets completely static then it stops and ejects and the tape is caught around one of the pistons, it doesn't do too much damage, but I guess its a form of eating the tape, what should I do? this will do normal rewind fine

  • I've got a older JVC HR-VP604U from around 1993. It has a few problems that make it useless at the moment. For one, the take up reel will not move when in play. The supply reel moves but not the take up. I'm assuming it's a belt problem? It stops playing the tape before anything bad happens. Secondly, the door on the VCR itself won't when the tape ejects. This means I have to manually push the door open for the tape to come out. If you could give me some ideas that would be great!

  • Very helpful videos. I have a 1983 portable VCR that only records in black and white (plays other videos in color just fine), what might be wrong with it? It would be nice to get the little thing working.

  • Yesterday, my aunts VCR ate a tape when ejecting. It was a JVC and had been in storage for a while. When I opened it up, I saw it had a geared idler. What should be replaced? How do you repair a crinkled tape?

  • I have an old broadcast SVHS camera. It always records a very slightly shaky picture. Would the recording head need demagnetizing? I plug the camera into a modern dv recorder and it was fine, but I would like to get the SVHS vcr recording better. Thanks. Great vids btw.

  • It works through a DV recorder because anything digital must do time base correction. TBC (Time Base Correction)..

I would honestly check belts and tension. The tension could be off or a belt is getting weak.

Are you sure this is a broadcast equipment? Broadcasting equipment were usually Betacam.

  • Thanks, I will replace the belt and check the tension. (if one exists here in New Zealand)

The camera originally came from a local TV station. Its a Sony DXC 325P. It probly had a live back on it and someone fitted the Panasonic AG7450AP vcr back.

Would demagnetizing the recording heads change the picture?

  • You know if a VCR gets jammed inside the VCR how can you get it out without the tape actually getting damaged and if the tape is jammed inside the VCR and it won't eject what do you think is causing the tape not to eject

  • Yep very helpful videos explaining about faults with the VCR brilliant

  • We used to have an older Sony VCR from around 1993. It had a few problems that made it useless For one, the take up reel will not move when in record or play. The supply reel moves but not the take up. I'm assuming it's a belt problem? It stopped recording onto the tape and ejected it quite quickly Secondly, the door on the VCR itself won't when the tape ejects. also play stop rewind and fast forward would not work properly also the record to If you could give me some ideas that would be great!

  • my neighbor's GE vcr is making a squealing noise. what is the problem? I'm offering to fix it for her and I don't want to fix the idler tire when it's the belts that need repair. How do I determine the source?

  • im doing some experiment video stuff with messing with the tape and trying to get errors and stuff all that crap, so what i want to do is mess with those heads while video is playing, my question is, where do i avoid touching when its plugged in? what parts electrocute you?

  • Honestly, every VCR runs on different specs, and thus can be different. But I would recommend staying away from the video drum as it's very fast and can hurt you, and pretty much every other PCB that's behind or next to the drive assembly. Usually directly behind is the power supply.

To get really interesting results depending how strong the motor is/belts, mess with the tensioner arm. That can mess up video and sometimes audio too (and thus speed).

  • thanks man! i should wear rubber gloves i guess also.

so the tensioner arm is probably the same as messing with all the other stuff combined as far as effecting how stuff is seen on the monitor i guess? if i mess with the video drum ill use like a stick or some sort of hand substitute.

do you know if rubber gloves protect from shocks with that high of voltage? i plan on not touching anything electrical but its good to be paranoid i guess.

  • Yea, if you use yellow kitchen gloves. That's what I do. But this isn't like thousands of volts, it's usually 5v to 12v inside, just possibly high current.

If you manually stop the video drum, be warned, that drums motor coil may burn up.

  • You know if the tape does not play or record is there anything that causes the tape not to play or record then Aidan

  • You know the Video Drum Aidan, if it does not record on the tape properly is there anything you can do

  • On my VCR, whenever an object is red, it turns out pink. I got it new last summer and I take good care of it. What's wrong? Oh, and I don't think that I can open it up because it's built in to the TV.

  • "replace the drum" - it's most likely just dirty heads and it's incredibly easy to clean them.

  • nice video!

My VCR acts weird with certain tapes. Like it seems to to be fine with professional tapes, like movies I bought and such, but on blank tapes, it will sometimes eject it when I try to play the tape and then power off. When I turn it back on, it says "Eject R"

  • i have a vcr i plays for 5 seconds and it'll stop playing what is the prob? thanks

  • Thank god I found your videos. When I stop the tape during rewind, my vcr sporadically ejects the tape from time to time and the tape gets stuck on one the right roll which leads the tape to the head. After it occured, the roll itself is in starting position, the way it used to be. It's late 90s frontloader, if this has any significance. What's the problem here?

  • hakemon, my VCR has a little trouble... the colors are dissapearing when I play some tapes... I can't fix this 'cause I don't know why is this... what I can do home to repair it?

  • Hi, My vcr simply just wont rewind or fast forward on its own, it will fast forward as it is playing though. Does something need adjusting or replacing ? I enjoy learning about the vcr, since I have a few.

    BinLA

  • i have 2 problem with my vcr, it dose not wants to take the tapes and when it dose it eats my tape. i love my vcr for my kids cuz they cant get scrach. what do i need to do? ;(

  • I want to ask a question. I have a old VCR ( a 80s AKAI model ) that it has problems ejecting the tape. I press eject, it starts the proccess to eject it, and halfways, it stucks. If i press it again the cassete goes again to the playing position. I dont know why its doing that, and the weirdest thing is that it doesnt doing it always - only most of the times.

Anyway, thanks for the great videos.

  • The motor is most likely going weak, or the drive circuitry that controls the motor. Caps or regulators can cause this if they weaken. Especially the caps (Electrolytic Capacitors).

  • Thank you :)

  • I want to ask you a question we used to have this old VCR from mid 90s a Sony model and it had mainly all these problems such as with ejecting the tape the tape would not eject properly it also had problems recording onto a tape it also had problems rewinding a tape and fast forwarding a tape it also had problems with stopping the tape and playing the tape but all these problems happened after lots of years what do you think could have caused that to happen then Hakemon is there any problems

  • You know when a VCR does not rewind fast forward stop play eject or record onto a tape what is the main problem can somebody please help thanks

  • I have a situation. My VCR plays audio but I just get snow for the video part. This problem came about suddenly without any degredation of video quality leading up to it.

    Thanks,

    Joe

  • these are great videos! Thank you. I wanted to know why the vcr wouldn't even accept the tape when I try to insert it? It is a citizen, probably about 10-12 yrs old. I have taken the cover off, but I cannot find the problem. When I try 2 insert, it looks like it wants to play, kinda of a stutter effect occurs every couple seconds, but nothing.

  • When we press play, the picture is snowy, how do we fix it? Can it be fixed?

  • You called me an idiot not that long ago, why should i help you?

  • I need help, my dad got the vcr about 9 years ago, it used to work until a month ago, then when I put in the tape and automatically plays, it shows the white image, I even used a real videotape and same problem. (Charlie's Angels(2000))

  • Clean the video heads.

  • When we press record the tape ejects how can we fix it can it be fixed

  • idoit

  • stfu

  • hakemon,just a little food for thought

or an idea, when answering a question,

place persons id at begining so we know

    who your answering to ,

    we are lost other wise..

    just a thought....

  • my vcr only play a little of my tape i can't get it to play all of it and vcr wont fast forward keep stoping and rewind please help my old movies is on this tape thank you wanda

  • hey,hakemon i like your vcr class 101, have

a question on daewoo vcrs , i have one that

will fastforward with picture only, tape will

    not leave drum,

it will not rewind backwards ,if it trys to

the vcr ejects tape and turns off?

any ideas on fixing this? thanks...

  • First of all, great videos!. Now my cuestion: When I insert a video on my Sony VCR, it loads the tape, the drum starts to rotate but the tape doesn't move, I have opened the case and the central wheel doesn't engage with the "feeding" reel.

Sorry about my english and thanks for the help!

  • my vcr is not recording why i have a new blank tape and i just get the sound when i am recording but my vcr plays fine my vcr is a goldstar gvr-dd1

  • The VCR's video drums recording head may be dead. Either that, or the erase head (or flying erase head, which would be on the drum), may have failed.

It could even be the circuitry. That's an electrical issue, and is sadly, different for every VCR.

  • I have a panasonic vcr from the year 2000 that needs some work i work on vcr's as a hobbie and I am currently restoring it but i ran into a problem it's rejecting all the tapes that i have.

  • I did not thing a recording head could fail

  • My VCR is not actually recording when I have a new blank VHS Tape I get no picture and no sound either I don't know why

  • If it's a 2000 model, it will be a gear idler, and then possibly sounds like a slipping reel or weak motor.

Better just get a new VCR, all newer VCR's are indeed junk.

  • My tapes get stuck and won't eject. The tapes get stuck. It also turns off the VCR. How can I fix this?

  • Sounds like the idler isn't picking up slack when the tape is stopped.

If it's an older VCR (under mid 90's), try hitting rewind or fast forward before ejecting. If it's a newer VCR, this trick won't work.

  • How do I remedy this? Do I need to replace it? My VCR is from 2002 or 2003. If it needs replacing, how do I replace it?

  • I have repeating video streak on all tapes -- can you advise me what to do.

    Mike Z

  • Video drum needs cleaning..

  • great video ... one quick question, u know how u said that the idler has a worn out tire, is it hard to get another tire or can it still be fixed? cause it is just a little problem... do u know if u can find it at a hardware store or something?? really interesting video!!

  • What if the VCR can't eject the tapes? How do you fix it?

  • Can you make a video on how a radio works? You know, the portable ones that you plug in.

  • Do you fix other things besides VCR's?

  • So, if my VCR has bad picture then I need a new video drum in my VCR? BTW, I love VCR's. They're so cool!

  • Clean the video drum first. A failing idler or loose belt can also cause bad picture, if the tape isn't moving at the right speed.

  • How can I plug in a VCR while it's open with out getting hurt or shocked to see how the tape is moving? How do I clean the video drum?

  • Get the VCR head cleaning solution

  • How do I know how fast the tape is supposed to go?

  • (Your asking far too many questions. I can only answer so few at a time).

If you aren't confident in repairing the VCR, as is obvious about fear of getting shock, leave it to a professional.

  • I'm confident. I just want to know this stuff. I've been working on Electronics for two years now.

  • i have a vhs camcorder. its been working fine until a day ago. the problem is that when i insert a cassette it pulls out the tape but almost immediately after it puts the tape back inside the cassette. the rewind and forward works when its on playback mode but the play and record function wont work. i hope its something repairable since i use my camera alot. any thoughts of what it could be?

  • It sounds like either the motor or the belts for the guiding system is weak.

If you can check the belts, do so.

  • Can you make a video about tracking?

Thanks for these, hardly anybody loves poor old VHS anymore.

  • I can address this easiliy in a reply. If you have bad tracking, it could be one of a few things.

    Common problems:

Loose or too tight tension arm.

    Dirty video heads.

Another can be the tracking control circuit. Unfourtunetly, whenever I came across one of these, I didn't bother fixing it.
