if you have ever been the receiver of said mental bullshit you would know that simply saying go fuck with someone else is no answer. This song is not about oone person playing games, this is about a marriage gone wrong, and there is never a right or wrong side. If you think that than you really have a lot of growing to do.

@topchris Yes you are right BUT the reason for this song is because is wife was unfaithful to him as blondrn56 said. I think I heard that from an interview that where he himself had said that
From what I understand, he was pissed, he found his wife unfaithful, and he has every right to express himself . I love his passion, and feel his anger.. Go Phil.....
Greatness comes with passion and pain. He absolutely created a masterpiece with this song. A perpetual F "U that will last as long as time exists!! Wow what power and gift to us all..
THIS IS SO OUT OF PRINT VHS but where is the IN THE AIR OF NIGHT . believe it or not San Jose, KSJO or KOME broadcasted this over the radio and I recorded only the first 45 minutes. Then released on VHS. Does your video have any interviews with Phil like my long lost tape had? I remember it well, dont have audio tape anymore but he mentioned his divorce (which is what this song is probably about) and even the Beatles.
The album is great. Fact. Song, great, fact. Was he drunk.. hummm, he was just expelling everything the song had to offer. Fact. ...Drunk? Let's see the proof. From what I know about this particular concert he didn't stammer or stumble once.
But hey, maybe that's nostalgia. You kids will learn about that one day :)
Sadly, I heard he doesn't perform this song anymore...at the time he wrote it, he was going through a bitter divorce and he was in a "bad" place...and he regrets recording the song to some extent.
@SweetMamaMojo What? He won't perform it? One of his best tunes. if not THE best. Well, I guess no one wants to see a grouchy, hacked-off 60 yr old now...
This was a great unannounced show. He played the last date of the tour at the Roxy on Sunset the night before and said "this it it except for one more night in Pasadena". But oh no, we talked and I was IN, called buddies and had a great time.
@erock8469 Don't you love when there's a version/performance of a certain song, and it's like the best version EVER. it's like there's a performance of Bruce Springsteen's Thunder Road on here that's on b/w video that's like the best version i've ever heard.

@rexrockandroll That's past. It's over. gone. Today is a new day...and every day is going to be the best. You have more to care about now. No need to hope for it...it's here now. Relax...enjoy that time. We know how it will go. Love conquers all. And for someone to think they can step on it...fk 'em. Those who try are just one the many you refer to as the asses. If he was and it still ROCKS, then yer all the better for it, if he's got a bit of a buzz on, damn well he should, one of the only jobs where it can be even encouraged instead of being fired for, SO MORE POWER TO HIM!!
Drunk?! No way! He's trying to show just the right amount of self-restraint - can't get too mad too quickly -- then once he can, he has to restrain himself before he starts trashing stuff! lol
Awe come on!! He's not drunk he's showing the 'FEELINGS' of that song! Geez some of you are ridiculous! Would you rather he just stood up there like a rock? He's into the song!!

I may be drunk, but Phil here, certainly is not. I love this concert, it's tight as a drum and Phil is pretty much at the peak of his divorce driven song writing period. Clearly those who interpret displays of emotion - as demonstrated here - as being fuelled by alcohol do not understand this level of performance. This is the opening song of the concert?? later we will see Phil play piano, drums in a way that only a musician of his quality can. Want pissed? Check out brit genius Shane McGowan!
He is not drunk. Phil Collins has always been so theatrical during his presentations. Maybe this comes from his former days in Genesis. When Peter Gabriel and all the band dressed up in costumes and painted their faces. He is not drunk, listen to the lyrics, he is mad angry and being sarcastic to whoever he dedicated the song
Phil Collins has always been so theatrical, maybe from his former days in Genesis with Peter Gabriel, when they even dressed up in costumes, and painted their faces. Have you listened to the lyrics. He is not drunk, he is angry and sarcastic. That is why I love his songs
people who suggest here that Phil is drunk while doing this kick, never watched him performe with his heart. Cause that's how he move's when he sings songs with all his heart. Check p.e. mama-performances. Even in the vid is showable.

You people saying he could be drunk are, in my opinion, completely delusional. He's obviously very into the performance and passionate about what he's saying.
OMG, as a former drunk, I can tell you he IS NOT DRUNK............I know all too well how drunks act and behave..............why would someone say or assume that????? Even if he was so what???? He didn't fall off the stage or forget one words,,,,,,,,,,,geesh.

When Peter Gabriel and all the band dressed up in costumes and painted their faces (early 70s). He is not drunk, listen to the lyrics, he is mad angry and being sarcastic to whoever he dedicated the song, and he is acting the song
@BubbyFur I agree not drunk..Doesn't anyone see that it is showmanship and the man is also acting out the sentiments of the song. Depression, anger, despair, etc.
It's so obvious.
I guess in a day and age of videos that donl;t even relate the the songs; no one recognises acting when they see it.
@BubbyFur Exactly..Watch any Phil Collins video..he's a showman..likes to put emotion and feeling into every song and show it as well..just to give the song a more storytelling feel..
Daryl actually was a touring member of Genesis back to 1978, after Steve Hackett left the band. When Phil went solo in the early 80s, Daryl played on his studio albums and toured with him as well. Likewise with Chester on the drums, though he goes back a little father (very early 1977).
Phil's first two albums (Face Value and Hello I Must Be Going) have always been my favorites..
On dirait que c'est moi qui à ecrit les paroles de cette chanson... Pour toi Roxy Grenier ! 1 8 U.

If he was and it still ROCKS, then yer all the better for it, if he's got a bit of a buzz on, damn well he should, one of the only jobs where it can be even encouraged instead of being fired for, SO MORE POWER TO HIM!!

Drunk?! No way! He's trying to show just the right amount of self-restraint - can't get too mad too quickly -- then once he can, he has to restrain himself before he starts trashing stuff! lol

I love that a performer can actually become self involved in his own lyrics enough to perform this well.

THIS is music! Not that Beatles-lite shit that Oasis churn out.

just read somewhere he wasn't drunk at all... he just got lost in his emotions and got more and more angry about his latest divorce at that time...

He's hardcore for wearing a monkey suit to a concert.

Drunk????
He is not drunk. Phil Collins has always been so theatrical during his presentations. Maybe this comes from his former days in Genesis. When Peter Gabriel and all the band dressed up in costumes and painted their faces. He is not drunk, listen to the lyrics, he is mad angry and being sarcastic to whoever he dedicated the song

people who suggest here that Phil is drunk while doing this kick, never watched him performe with his heart.

I never said Phil's an alcoholic because I know that's not true, but who knows, before this concert he might have taken a shot or two :)

@BubbyFur I agree not drunk..Doesn't anyone see that it is showmanship and the man is also acting out the sentiments of the song. Depression, anger, despair, etc.
It's so obvious.
I guess in a day and age of videos that donl;t even relate the the songs; no one recognises acting when they see it.
zaffi61 1 year ago
@zaffi61 agreed, it's a performance.

I'm sure I've seen in the 80s a performance with him in drums. Can't find it.. an beginning to think my false remembering .
