  • Scotty, two questions: It does not appear you hook up the high side hose when pulling a vacuum. Is that correct and if you do (connect it), do you open the valve to that side? Also, I assume when you pull the vacuum pump off (you don't show this), you close the valves and then remove the pump? Thanks, this is very helpful!!

  • @blackmarkiv I used to hook up the high side too, but modern cars are so cheaply made, many don't have high side hoses, and those that do are so cheaply made they often leak after you hook a gauge up to em, so I keep hands off. The rest of your stuff is fine.

  • @scottykilmer Thanks!!

  • i it legal fr people without refrigerant licence to own r34a? im pretty sure it isnt, and dude dont let anyone catch you bleeding the hose like that because that lets refrigerant into the atmosphere and thats a $10,000 fine.

  • @justins462 depends where you are. Here in Texas, anyone can buy 134a at an auto parts store. And that tiny bleeding isn't going to do much. But if you are in a more restrictive area, pay a mechanic with recycling equipment.

  • @scottykilmer Heh Heh Nice job of checking for leaks, but I realise this is simply a guide and most people would go to a A/C Mechanic anyway.

Laws regarding A/C differ as you said and here in Australia it's the same What I used to be able to do I now cannot because it would cost me too much to get certified to do A/C even though I have worked in the trade like you for many years as a Mechanic

  • Hey Scotty, my car's AC system is completely outta refrigerant and has been for probably 8 years or so now. If I were to suddenly go fill it up, would it cause any problems with the lines or other parts after not having pressure for years? We took it in a few years back but re mechanic didn't fill it because he thought there was an electrical problem. Is it safe to fill up/recharge the system still?

  • @BowlingMania14 generally they are toast sitting that long, moisture gets in the system and ruins Everything inside. But if you want to gamble, put 3 ounces of pag oil in the system first, and then do as in this video and PRAY.

  • how do i put air in my tires??

  • @farerse you get an air pump and pump it in. Most guys buy a cheap one these days for 10 bucks that plugs into the cigarette lighter.

  • @scottykilmer thanks! and good videos

  • @scottykilmer

Nice, video explanation. I guess, we do the same procedure for re-filling refrigerant in our home AC's, say split A.C ?? right, i don't think its much different.

  • @cyborghunny yep, same way, just different pressures and gases.

  • yeah because we all have that sh*t laying around heh good instructional video for a new employee at a auto shop maybe, not your average joe.

  • @danger86rangerr AH, but unfortunately it's the ONLY way to do it correctly, guessing with levels and not evacuating a system is pot luck repairing. and the stuff doesn't cost that much at places like Harbor Freight tools.

  • What kind of refrigerant scale are you using, and where did you get it from?

  • @TheKb8wlu TIF is the company, but there are tons out there now, just google it and buy a lower priced one, they all work the same

  • ha ha he said crazy enough to own a jaguar

  • Man how many cars does he have?

  • You are my new best friend. Thank you for this!

  • exellent ! now that i know the process the mechanic will not cheat me :) , from venezuela , greetings and thanks !

  • Are you also supposed to hook up the high side along with the low side when you evacuate the system?

  • @BellumSacrumBellum28 you can, you don't have to, it just takes a little more time if you only hook up to the low side, and today, many systems only have a low side valve, they leave the high one off for cheaper manufacturing. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Also the high side can introduce a liquid into the compressor which can cause compressor failure (depending on the tyoe of compressor). I teach people to use the high side for diagnostic purposes only.

  • @MNmale1972 Actually introducing liquid to the high side is a better way to go, however to charge from the high side you need a machine to pump it in while the engine is off. The low side is on the inlet side of the pump so if liquid is introduced it can grenade your pump. This is why its important to charge slowly from the low side so the refrigerant can vaporise before it gets to the compressor.

  • @72plyfury I am not saying you are wrong because you are not, however in the video he was not using a machine. As a rule, the receiver drier would be the saving device for the low side. There is no saving device for the high side. The other variables are the actual locations of the service ports. Thanks for your input.

  • i have a question what do u did with the tank u take the air that the vacuum cause or u putting the refrigerant ????

  • @1989purry I don't really comprehend what you're asking. But if you're talking about the recycling machine tank, you just leave it till it's full then take it to a recycling place. Scotty

  • how do i know were the low side usually is?

  • @nico27004 the gauges only fit one way, they are different size adaptors. The low side HAS to be somewhere between the compressor and the dash on the low pressure hose coming out of the dash going to the compressor. They vary immensely where on that line though. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer What kind of refridgerant scale are you using, and where did you get it from?

  • Moisture in an A/C system causes the oil to turn acidic, and eats your seals. DON'T USE THOSE CHEAP RECHARGE KITS AS THEY DO NOT VACUUM THE SYSTEM!

  • You mean I absolutely must use a scale to measure the pressure as the refrigerant goes in? Can't I simply add the refrigerant and take my readings from the gauge itself? I'm not using a large canister as you have, I'll be using small 14oz cans.

  • @Moralvorstellung7 No, that's guessing as pressures change with temp and humidity outside and a problem in the system will give you false readings if it has a problem. Scales are the only way to go. Scotty

  • Hey Scotty, how do you know which hose is the high side and which is the low side? also what happens if you hook your A/C gauges up to the high side?

  • @13FravelJ the fittings only fit on their correct hose, the add low side fitting will only fit on the low side, and the high fitting will only fit the high. scotty

  • Hi Scotty,I look at your video to late,I didn't know that I have to vacuum the system before I can recharge it, I got an 88 jaguar xj6 that was in a garage for 8 years, the ac system is R12 but it has a leak because it was empty so I made the mistake to put R134a without vacuum the system and then the expansion valve and the 2 hoses attached to it started to leak very bad. I need your help, please tell me if a have to replaced everything or just the expansion valve and the hoses?thank you.

  • @miculito69 start there, and be sure to vacuum it at least a couple hours on that old thing. Scotty

  • Aww hell, I'll just go pay. I don't have that equip.. or the time.

  • @Glefit Yea, put you'll pay the money then. Places like harbor freight tools sells that equipment very low priced. scotty

  • scotty can i use the r134a refrigerant to fill the system

  • @tinleo333 all cars can run on that R 134a, if it is an older car, you convert it to that gas by using an 80 percent load and a few ounces of pag oil to lubricate it. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer i notice they have pag 46,100,150 my car is a 2003 prius witch is better & can i use the r134a cans they sell in the advance or autozone to refill the whole system after i repair the leak and use the vacuum pump?

can you help me to save some bucks plz

  • @tinleo333 Do not work on your prius compressor IF it's an electronic compressor and not a mechanical one that runs off the fan belt. They require special equipment to work on. But if it's a fan belt driven comp, use 46 Scotty

  • @scottykilmer thanks scotty from 2001 to 2003 first gen prius uses belt driven comp, from 2004 to now they use electric comp thanks.

  • How much are the vacuums and where can you get them?

  • @no77ip various prices, I got mine at harbor freight tools on sale for 50 bucks. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Thanks

  • This guy has great videos but he smokes way too much meth.

  • @Thycid Never did meth, they didn't have that in the sixties. just pot. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer I know i'm just messing around cause you seem so hyper. didn't mean to offend you in anyway if i did

  • Hummm...... Good video, but average Joe can't do this.

  • @6400az it's the ONLY correct way of doing it, otherwise you're just guessing, which gets expensive in the long run. You can buy these tools at places like harbor freight tools and then share them with your friends and neighbors to make the cost less per person. Scotty

  • @6400az

Yes, you are it right. I took my car to get the AC fix an they said there was a problem with the evaporator, to fix it would cost 700 + dollars. I declined, but whatever they did, my car has had cold air for the last 3 weeks.

What do you make of this. Thank you.

  • Can empty refrigerant cause fog on my windshields? I turn AC to full and the fog just keeps building. I guess my AC doesn't remove moisture from the air.

  • @hooperwille yes, AC air is dry as the desert, and if it doesn't work, it will fog up. Scotty

  • @hooperwille sir its probally your heater core leaking.

The antifreeze is more than likely whats fogging your

    windsheild

  • Scotty.not abt Ac. I have a ?? Abt my cars clutch I can push the clutch to the floor and try to start the car but it starts to move when i turn the key and can't Chang gears why the car is on I have to shut the car off to select a gear

  • @kodye414 your clutch hydraulics are wearing out, OR the clutch itself is wearing out. Scotty

  • Hi, My car just started struggling to change gears the first and second gear, but the 3rd gear it doesnt struggle at all, and i cant go up a hill with the ac on, i have to turn off the ac to go up the hill, and if i put on the ac on max my car like looses speed. Help me please.

  • @mandayn It could be an engine problem, or a tranny problem. the only way to tell these days is with a dealer level scan tool to analyze the data coming out of the car. It's that complex today, even I couldn't tell just by driving it. scotty

  • @HauntedBeetlejuice you would see a compressor leak at the seals with your dye. Odds are the evaporator in the dash is leaking, pay a mechanic to check that with his sniffing machine. Scotty

  • Hey scotty i have a 1996 Infiniti I30 blowing hor air, i replaced the air compressor charged it up and nothing.. my pressures are reading really high.. what should i check?

  • @Livepure2 probably time to replace the expansion valve with high pressure. Scotty

  • Hi scotty i have a 1985 chevy c10 truck and the system is an r12 system. i was wondering if there is any way to recharge this system even though everything is r134a nowadays. Thank You

  • @fishnfreak18 just use an 80 percent load and six ounces or so of PAG oil in the system and it'll work fine. Scotty

  • compressor clutch/pulley siezed & snapped serp belt...replaced compressor ( 00' jeep cherokee) and belt...system was empty of freon...does this mean I also had a seperate leak...or could compressor have had leak and lost its oil and freon along with it?

  • @blacktan77 co mpressors often go bad and leak all the refrigerant out when their seals burn out Scotty

  • @HauntedBeetlejuice that's cause houses don't move, but cars do. so cars have to use rubber hoses for flexibility, while a house unit can use copper that will never crack and leak. Scotty

  • Sorry to be a wise guy, but that is 30"Hg(in of mercury) not pounds. A perfect vacuum is said to be 29.9", this is equivalent to -14.7 psig.

It's a proven fact of physics, wtc 1,2,& 7 were taken down by nuclear demolition. Again, apologize if the truth gets under ur skin.

  • @cheerdiver yea, yea , wise guy. The positive pressure is in pounds, the vacuum is different. But it still says minus 30 on the gauges, so who cares? Scotty

  • nice inline 6!

  • Scotty love all your videos, I have a 98 dodge ram that keeps blowing fuses as soon as I put on my A/C. Unpluged cable to clutch and didn't blow the fuse but when connected to the clutch it blows. Could over charging the system cause it to blow a fuse or do I need a new compressor, because It looks like I can't just replace the clutch on this dodge.

    Thanks and keep posting videos.

  • @rg10969 your compressor is shot, replace it. Scotty

  • Scotty, great Video, thanks! But, Don't I have to add oil to the system also????

And how do I do that properly?

  • @bakersfieldduilawyer adding oil is unfortunately educated guesswork. the only way to tell what's in the system is to empty it out, flush the oil out, and put a factory load of oil from their charts into the system. if a system is empty, many guys will just add an ounce for safety, assuming that much leaked out with the refrigerant. Scotty

  • wish i was this good well done

  • Well damn. I sure wish I had seen this an hour ago, before my neighbor butted in and just emptied the can into my car. I had no idea I needed to flush and create a vacuum first. Have I wasted the coolant? My AC has been empty for a couple of months now. How will this affect my system and its' performance?

  • @OmnilimbO It can ruin the system, have it evacuated and refilled. scotty

  • Hey Scotty great vid. I am having a problem with my 2004 durango. The compressor, after warming up , goes on and off. What could the prob be and what should I look for on a set of gauges?

  • @kdspeiser they all go on and off some, it's called cyclinn. If it's excessive, watch my video "Using AC guages to fix car AC problems" and analyze it that way.Scotty

  • scotty do I have to drain the coolant, before vacuum it the lines ???cuz I'm about to do a flushing and freon recharge on a 2000 dodge durango 4x4 v8 ,what would you suggest me?,please( is my first year in this profession Im about to graduate next month ^^)

  • @xxrenzo19 you have to use a recycling machine to suck the old refrigerant out, then vacuum out the system and refill it. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer iight thanx scotty ,so once I vacuum the system I can drain the old coolant, flush it ,refill fresh coolant and then refill the refrigerant, right?

  • scotty your website button ask scotty didnt work. I cant get my 4.25 lbs that my suburban with rear air needs in the system. Im using the little cans. some have stop leak in them is that the problem? Im in dallas its 104 today and my low is reading 45psi and my high 225 but im still not cooling. FYI the compressor sounds like a bit of loose change is in it.

  • @johnkatiphillips well, compressors should be silent, so it's wearing out. And I NEVER use cans, too inaccurate. I use a scale and a 30 lb cannister to fill them correclty. Otherwise, you're just guessing. Scotty

  • i cant find the 2 spots to put the freon in my 1989 lincoln town car do you know where they are?? please help me thanks john................

  • @williams6975 follow the hoses coming off the compressor, they have to be somewhere between the compressor and the firewall, just keep following the hoses. Both should have little caps on em. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer i see 2 they look like bike inter tubes i push them in alittle with my finger nail an something sprayed out of them but when i went to the store to buy freon i hooked the end cap on the freon can to the to caps an it wouldn't fit stuff got all over now what do u think that means

  • @williams6975 there are 2 fittings, one for high side one for low. You only connect the add valve to the low side fitting, it's the only one it will fit on . Scotty

  • this is amazing......this is my same car even! thank you......88 VDP, right? jaguar gold....lol

  • cool

  • i'm crazy enough to have 3! :D

  • Comment removed

  • great vid - thanks for sharing :)

  • i have a 2004 saab 9-3 and i have like 3 of those fittings on my car 2 are placed my eachother than one lower. how do i know witch one is witch

  • @wowshiqptar If you follow the thick suction hose from the compressor to the firewall on the dash, the add fitting is on that hose. Scotty

  • hi scotty my friend has a 98 Plymouth and after he changing a hose and put refrigerant, only hot air comes, and all the ac systen seen to work okay , please tell me what else can we chek.

  • @felipevinalay tons of things can go wrong, from clogged driers to moisture in the system. First do a pressure reading of the high and low side to see if they are normal or not. always start with that to look for pressure restrictions. Scotty

  • I recently bought a '91 BMW and A/C doesn't work. What would be the first step in diagnosing the system? I believe it has the R12 configuration still. I don't have gauges or vacuum pump or scales. Should I just take it to service center or maybe try the retrofit kit? Your thoughts?

  • my air is not that cool in my 2004 ford explore what mit be the issue

  • Scotty, love your videos first off, secondly I bought a 94 box truck and everything is great except the AC system doesnt produce cold air, the compressor doesnt even try to engage. I figured it could be low on refridgerant, but its been so long since I've had to recharge any AC that I think I may have just filled it up with mostly air from the can and didnt actually get any refridgerant in it, so what do I do now?

  • i have an 18oz can of r134a sub zero with the gauge and hose on it and i have a 94 tbird how would i go by using it and know if its enough. oh and could you explain the ambient temp is its confusing me. please and thanks.......nice videos

  • Just wondering but, has anyone ever tried hooking up 3 or 4 A/C's to their carburetor? it would make a nice, cool charge though.

  • Is scaling the only way to measure refrigerant amount? How about line pressures? Doesn't it tell the system is full or properly loaded?

  • my ac is completely empty and im going to be replacing my ac compressor. when adding the refrigerant can i just use a recharge kit sold at autozone the cans and guage they sell or do i need the big tank and hoses?

  • @twisted636 You can do anything, BUT it's VERY hard to get the exact right amount of refrigerant in using those tiny cans. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer about how much would a service center charge to refill it would it be cheaper then buying the tank and hoses?

  • @twisted636 of course a single refill should cost less than the equipment and tank. Just price around, but realize you then have to trust other people that may not be trustworthy. Scotty

  • I have a 134a recharging can with a valve, hose, and gauge already attached to it. I have almost no refrigerant in my A/C system in my '96 Accord. Can I just attach the can and load? Or do I need to vacuum out first?

  • @purplefetus3 If it still has pressure inside, you can add as air is not in the system.. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Using the pressure gauge on my 134a canister of refrigerant, would I be able to measure if there is any pressure inside my system? I'm assuming that I can attach it to the low-side port and I should be able to get a pressure reading prior to pulling the trigger on my refrigerant canister.

I'm hoping to bypass the step where you suction out everything in order to create a vacuum.

  • @purplefetus3 yes, that should work. Scotty

  • @purplefetus3 what do ya know bout benz mercury switches?

  • @JCBuddy30 Sorry, I don't know anything about that.

  • Where does a person get a set of those guages Scotty? Thank you for all your videos

  • @chevynut71570 I got mine at harbor freight tools, very low prices. Scotty

  • nice video Scotty! You should be on cable tv.

  • Scotty, when you flush the A/C do you disconnect all the hoses and flush each component separately or do you just disconnect the compressor and blow it through the high side and out the low?

  • @RobertGary1 Flush each part separately. Scotty

  • scotty

i have toyota SEG (in US Toyota Tercel). The problem is rpm meter is running 1000 while odometer 90-100km/h. it is normal. plz help me. zafero Malaysia

  • @zaferoefendi your tachometer is just breaking down and giving the wrong reading. Scotty

  • how to go around the AC pulley integra 1993 gs

  • @brankovergara don't know what you're asking. If you mean how to bypass the pulley if the ac compressor is broken and you don't want to fix it, buy a compressor bypass pulley assembly for that. Scotty

  • LOL I love your videos. Your acting makes the video fun to watch.

  • Het Scotty. Is there a different way to fill your A/C after you replace the compressor and dryer?

  • @314edpiper This is the only correct way to do it. Scotty

  • Hello Scotty, I have a 2000 Mustang GT and when I turn on the AC or Defrost my engine increases in RPM which I guess i normal. But when I do it while I'm driving my car it still does it and I can feel it jerk the car forward from the increased RPM then slows it down after a few seconds. Is this normal? And is there anyway that I can get it to not do this?

  • @great1sniper Not really normal, your compressor may be wearing out and dragging the engine and then stopping the drag and making it race up. But, if it blows cold, I'd live with it as it can do that a long time and still work. Scotty

  • i got a rear ac unit and it doesent blow hot or cold.the front blows hot but not cold just normal air even if its on max ac.

  • @xgpnastyshotz First, fix the front to get the AC system working and see what happens. The rear may have just a heating problem and the rear ac may be fixed when you fix the AC system in the front first. watch my video "fixing your car's AC: " Scotty

  • @scottykilmer ok thankyou.

  • every time i turn my AC on my car it just blows air, not cold air? just normal air! i asked a mechanic n he said it will cost me 1000$ to get it fixed? wut u think scotty???

  • @huztlAz I look it up in my all data info system, but many newer vehicles have the amount on a sticker under the hood. Scotty

  • hey scotty, my mazda 323f astina ticks like crazy when the AC is on, it's nothing touching the AC fan. what could this be?

    thank you in advance

  • @ntnwebsolutions NOrmally that's a worn AC compressor if the noise is coming from under the hood, OR a worn fan belt there. Scotty

  • where can i get/ rent a vacuum pump? are they expensive?

  • @Drewtitus Na, I got one from harbor freight tools for less than 50 bucks. Scotty

  • what happens if you put too much or too little freon?

  • @sweetXricerockets It won't cool well. Scotty

  • @sweetXricerockets Okay, and how are we suppose to know how many pounds of freon our car takes?

  • What if you put too much in. Such as putting in 5 PSI in an A/C that only requires lets say 2 PSI.

  • @suburbanator91 You mean pounds, not psi. Too much builds up too much pressure and can blow the compressor seals and other rubber parts. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer but where do u find how much amount u got to put in?

  • Thanks for the great video, Scotty. Question - after vacuuming the system, how can I be certain that there are no significant leaks, before recharging the system?

  • @vgbr88 Shut the vacuum pump off and watch the vacuum pressure, if it loses vacuum pressure, there are leaks. Scotty

  • is the ac the hot air too or is it only the cold?

  • @amyourpapi23 The cold is AC, the hot is the heater core. Scotty

  • lol

    ya jag's suck ass

  • @illinois1984 Now no swearing here. But I agree in principle, jags are not very good vehicles, unless you're looking for a large paperweight. Scotty

  • Comment removed

  • car will not start but crank when the engine is too hot. how do i fix it.

  • @TheChimzunzun Normally that's just a bad starter, so change that first. Scotty

  • hi, scotty i have a question....i charged my truck up and it lasted for about almost 2 months now it is blowing hot air. do you think its a small leak and if so will the leak sealer stuff that comes with the refrigerant bottles work ?

  • @ROMOMANIA84 I don't believe much in those sealers, they often clog stuff up. Try adding some UV dye and see where the leak is coming from. Scotty

  • It's hard to believe that car required two entire pounds of r134a most domestic fridges have 3-6 ounces. Is this typical with automobiles?

  • @herbertjbuchanan Yes, but they are using less refrig now, many modern cars just use 550 grams worth. Scotty

  • Hi Scotty i have a question, i have suburban but no tools how much do they cost and where is the best place to buy them at? Thank you

  • @Crazyboy13Z Prices vary a lot. Harbor freight tools sell discount tools at a pretty low price for do it yourselfers. Scotty

  • Hi Scotty i have a question, i have suburban but no tools how much do they cost and where is the best place to buy them at? Thank you

  • hey scotty question, so how do i know how many pounds use any other car?

and after the vacuum is finish doing its work i dont need to put oil in it before the refrigerant??

    thanks

  • @Hebert6760 Each vehicle uses different amounts of refrigerant., normally there's a sticker under the hood showing how much weight to put in. If you don't pump out any oil, you don't need to add any. Sometimes oil will be pumped out, so watch the oil level before and after evacuating, and it the level went up, put that much oil back in. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer hey scotty I hope you know to measure the oil level you must remove the compressor tip the oil into a container, measure it and put back in the requred amount and the right type!

  • you call it referigate, but its called Freon.

  • @Gutsyndicate No, the old refrigerant R 12 is called by the trade name Freon, modern R 12 is just called refrigerant. Freon is merely a brand name of the old stuff. Scotty Kilmer

  • @scottykilmer how much is it to refill it all the way up

  • @Gutsyndicate The word freon is a trademark of the Dupont company. all others companys call it refrigerannt or foran.

  • Hey its a Motor, its not a Enginecycle. So lets change it to start up your Motor :)

  • @MR24HRSPRODUCTIONS NO, it sounds better revv up your engine. And we call them cars, not motorcars, only the english call them that. And I'm an American. Scotty Kilmer

  • Please remember you have to fix the source of the leak before refilling with refrigerant. Otherwise, it's gonna leak out again.

  • @happy543210 Yes, in some cases. ALL ac systems leaks to some extent, some a little, some a lot. If you have to fill it up every five years, like some toyotas, I wouldnt' waste my time looking for that small of a leak. Scotty Kilmer
