my mom heard one of these the other day and she had been staying up at night listening with no success and i take out the garbage and here it and i thought it was a sick cat from across the street that had came over. lol until my mom said it was a bird so i asked chacha and got on here to confirm it.
The catbird I have living around my home scared the heck out of my sister, she thought it was a sick cat somewhere. But it is just a really cute little birdy. Lol.
it's not crying, it's not a baby calling it's mom, that's it's call. it sounds like it's saying "eric" near the end. Where I live, we rarely see it in the daylight, it gets active around sunset.
@pasfresh123 thanks for leaving that comment...I've always wondered which bird it was that was calling my name...and I just happened to try a google search "which bird call sounds like 'eric'" And it came to this page because of your comment. I was always sort of spooked by this bird, and when I started birdwatching, I've been wondering when I'd find out :)
I have one in my yard and he sounds JUST like this. Quite annoying in the morning! My Audobon friend says they call to the ladies and to other males, telling them to stay away ;)

They usually only cry like that when they're pissed off, so you were probably getting too close to it's nest.

Great video, the commentary is unintentionally hilarious but probably exactly what I would have said!

I think this is why they call it a catbird, it makes that crazy meow sound. I learned this the fun way the other day.

Agree with pasfresh. It is not crying. In fact, it is called catbird because of that call. They are great at mimicking too !
