Paul Smith (piano), Keter Betts (bass) and Bobby Durham (drums). Paul was subbing for Ella's long-time arranger, conducter and accompanist, Tommy Flanagan.
Even as Ella aged and could not hit the high notes with the vigor she used to in her youth and early versions of this song (Berlin), her timing remained impeccable. Equally important , her scatting was as inventive as ever to compensate for her natural decline as aging settled in. Still she was a most awesome singer, hard to compare anyone against her!

To answer “why they don’t make singer like that...” sadly it mostly has to do with money and distribution and the fact that the venues for live performance have all but dried up. This and when you have an entire genera of PoP music based on the percussive track and not melody (Rap) you can’t expect “melody” to sell. This may change again with the Internet. One can only hope!!!
i appreciate jazz singers soo much.. i hate singers who knows nothingelse but to belt their a** out.. jaz singers have powerful voices but they choose to maintain quality and class when they sing.. atleast thats what i think. :)
omg...wat talent kingdom is Ella?...amazing prodigy, innate passion, innate gift, she was born for it...magnificently electrifying..i am fortunate to hv gone through her music, her songs n performances - thanks to utube. Used to listen only to tapes n CDs before..got to know her name because she's always a trivia in crossword puzzles - "d queen of scat..", n my father wud write d answer as, "ella"...datz it..
It is amazing that here she is, twenty years past her prime, still doing this song. Granted, not as well as back in Berlin, but even so! She's 66 years old here, scattin away doing a six minute song without stopping or getting tired. AND IT'S GREAT! Amazing? No, just Ella.
Have no fear, music in general may suck these days, but its always there in the hearts and minds of everyone... just a matter of time until the greats will live again... who knows if we will ever have another Ella, Half an Ella will bloody well do!
i suggest anybody with dogs to wrestle with them during this song it is a lot of fun, get them fired up. she was the best her skat was as good as torme's and her voice was a lot prettier in my opinion i really appreciate these live videos. ive never seen her just listened
should people kill themselves when they have a special age? or should they poerhaps still work that what they could best? in this case "singing"? what should this comment mean pls? be carefull there are not only young people on YT.. and by the way you are also getting older.....
oh Paul Smith, he's still going strong, scratch that last question lol....I've seen footage of Paul and he still looks the same, when I saw him in 86 , it was with Ella, Bobby, and Keter.
At 4:36 this is a simple blues, so it sounds familiar. I don't know if it corresponds to one of her songs, as blues is a very common form. She sings how high the moon on Ella in Berlin where she is in olympic shape ! Her improvisation is hallucinating.
Age brings its own special changes. With Ella they are subtle.Perhaps more creativity. What she does to this song has to be heard at least once to understand what great jazz and scat in the hands of a master sound like. This was a BRAVO performance.
I'll never forget the times I saw Ella in concert. Wonderful to see this concert clip too....and to see her ideas come thru as she sings ~ Amazing ~ One and only....wish I had those pipes ~
we needn't forget that she's nearly 70 at this time period, and yet she was still performing the same songs she did when she was in her 30's. thats a real musician
How come they don't make singers like her anymore?
It's pure, sheer joy to see her perform. If she were to stand in the line of fire, warring nations would immediately sign a truce for peace.
