  • Even as Ella aged and could not hit the high notes with the vigor she used to in her youth and early versions of this song (Berlin), her timing remained impeccable. Equally important was the she scatting was as inventive as ever to compensate for her natural decline as aging settled in. Still she was a most awesome singer, hard to compare anyone against her!

  • To answer “why they don’t make singer like that...” sadly it mostly has to do with money and distribution and the fact that the venues for live performance have all but dried up. This and when you have an entire genera of PoP music based on the percussive track and not melody (Rap) you can’t expect “melody” to sell. This may change again with the Internet. One can only hope!!!

  • she is soo amaizing.. its like she does not need any words to sing.. wow!!!

  • im only 24 but im a fan....

i appreciate jazz singers soo much.. i hate singers who knows nothingelse but to belt their a** out.. jaz singers have powerful voices but they choose to maintain quality and class when they sing.. atleast thats what i think. :)

  • @ravenseyes17 Such as Liza Minelli. She couldn't sing her way out of a paper bag.

  • At her advanced age in this video, if alive today, she could out sing any of today's singers.

  • I LOVE ELLA FITZGERALD!

  • No one can compare to her -- she was the one!

Listen, learn, weep and smile -- she lived in the 20th Century -- thank you god

Love you Ella, not a day goes by when I sing and don't think of you

    Mary

Also, she is the innovator of all you hear in music today -

  • No one can compare to her -- she was the one!

Listen, learn, weep and smile -- she lived in the 20th Century -- thank you god

Love you Ella, not a day goes by when I sing and don't think of you

    Mary

  • Even when she's old she could still sing wonderfully and she could still do the scat singing. Wow....I wish she was my grandma.

  • This gives me goose bumps!!

  • I love her with every bit of my heart.

  • It is amazing that here she is, twenty years past her prime, still doing this song. Granted, not as well as back in Berlin, but even so! She's 66 years old here, scattin away doing a six minute song without stopping or getting tired. AND IT'S GREAT! Amazing? No, just Ella.

  • Thanks, Ella up there! A killer!

  • Nothing wrong with her timing! She's just kooly in tune

  • Love da energy

  • Qué vieja adorable... el mejor scat en la historia del jazz!

  • 8D oh my gosh she almost put me to tears performing at that age

  • was that Paul Smith on keys?

  • Yes Paul Smith on Piano, Bobby Durham on drums, and Keter Betts on bass.

  • lol, it's weird knowing the guy and then seeing him play with Ella.

  • who do you know carnage89?

  • oh Paul Smith, he's still going strong, scratch that last question lol....I've seen footage of Paul and he still looks the same, when I saw him in 86 , it was with Ella, Bobby, and Keter.

  • Yesss! :)

  • la amo!!!!!1

  • =D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • love her.

  • Como dijo su compañero y amigo Duke Ellington: "Ella Fitzgerald está más allá de cualquier categoría".

  • At 4:36 this is a simple blues, so it sounds familiar. I don't know if it corresponds to one of her songs, as blues is a very common form. She sings how high the moon on Ella in Berlin where she is in olympic shape ! Her improvisation is hallucinating.

  • It's Swingin' Sheppard Blues, an old song from Ella :)

  • omg, you're right! Thank you! Do you know what's before that ca. 4:01 ?

  • Comment removed

  • what song is that around 4:36, did she just make it up? It sounds so familiar. Maybe something like "pretty baby" in the lyrics. I'd love to know

  • swinging shepherd blues

  • tighitighitighi badubiduibidaaaaaaa bapiiiiiiiidipidi

  • Age brings its own special changes. With Ella they are subtle.Perhaps more creativity. What she does to this song has to be heard at least once to understand what great jazz and scat in the hands of a master sound like. This was a BRAVO performance.

  • oh mondieu! eargasm!! :D

  • Grossartige, Einzige Ella!Ein Ohrenschmauz!

  • Wao.. is just Ella... the best..

  • Lo más hermoso quese produzca musicalmente hablando. Gracias.

  • Alfonsina esta mujer no tiene nombre.. es demasiado... Ella Es lo máximo....

  • very, very nice singing

  • oh my God, I love this woman so much!

  • damn, damn, DAMN, woman! i love how she made her voice an instrument here. she will never have an equal.

  • Swing-Swing-Swing it Ella no one does it better or will!!!! BRAVA & Viva Ella

    Mr. Chip's

  • what a beautiful talented woman..my gosh. i just can't get enough of her. the sweetest voice...just can't get enough of you Miss Ella

  • Sure cant see anyone here with their hats on sideways and pants hanging off their rears. Hear this you punks...,. THIS HOW IT IS DONE

  • This woman is my idol. What I would of given to have seen her before her passing.

    love to ella!

  • se pasaaaaaaaa!!! BRUTAAAL!!!

  • Can you spell S W I N G? This captures its very essence, both up-and-down-tempo. Wow.

  • This song was written by a bebop composer!

  • I'll never forget the times I saw Ella in concert. Wonderful to see this concert clip too....and to see her ideas come thru as she sings ~ Amazing ~ One and only....wish I had those pipes ~

  • we needn't forget that she's nearly 70 at this time period, and yet she was still performing the same songs she did when she was in her 30's. thats a real musician

  • I saw Ella, Joe Pass, and Oscar Peterson at Carnegie Hall...it would be difficult to EVER see a better concert EVER!!!

  • Girl!!!!!! Come on up in thru here!!!!!

  • Forgive me, but just a thought:

How come they don't make singers like her anymore?

It's pure, sheer joy to see her perform. If she were to stand in the line of fire, warring nations would immediately sign a truce for peace.

With all due respect to all legendary vocalists - I believe Ella is beyond compare. Probably because she's beyond this plane. I've always thought she's an angel- Divine. I think they haven't a measure or category for her talent and gift.

    Just thinking aloud... =D

  • i'm sure they do somewhere. but people today care too much about looks and other shallow things so some beautiful singers get ignored and beautiful people get shoved into fame.

ella wasn't exactly attractive but it didn't matter- she was a fantastic singer. nowadays that can go on the backburneer if you can dance and look good in revealing clothes.

still once in a while a gem gets through- keep hoping!

    Cl

  • Because Jazz is no longer hip :(

  • at least to the pop generation, it's still hip to those of us who like it though

  • My gosh it is so sweet!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @whitephoenixofcrown yes she was the best, but also, they don't write songs like that anymore either, that's part of the problem.

  • @whitephoenixofcrown Because the music always changes to keep from getting stale. The general population has a chance to get back to music like this, but it simply wouldn't make money - this is realistically speaking

  • i'm still waiting the new real jazz singer......

  • SUBLIME!! bow to the grand momma of improvisation!! ELLA the virtuoso!!

  • the best rhythm section in the world. ray brown and ed thigpen? wow

  • @playbari That should have read; Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen.

  • The divine Ella was extraordinary...

  • there will never be another...never!!

  • fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • MASTER!!!

  • I am always amazed at how she maintained that girlish quality about her singing all those years... AND THAT VOCAL AGILITY...

  • Yeah her voice sounds so young, like a twenty year old singing or something. So young sounding but with the control of someone very old and very wise. She was the master.

  • She was still swingin' like a giant wrecking ball at this age!

  • She was a genius! I've heard her scat this a hundred times, each time different. She learned this genre from the master, Louis Armstrong, the man who invented scat singing. That's why she was the BEST and most creative. Sensational!!!!

  • as a real ellafan i can say this is one of her best concerts from the 80,s Here she is on her best thanks gr Dennis

  • she was 65 at the time of that concert

  • Beautiful Ella from the 80's wish we had more like her! Thank You
