Ray had one thing on top of Phil; he was fresh, daring and yes maybe a bit nervous.
But I felt that Genesis had turned for the better. Collins was falling asleep by his on succes.
I saw the show in Amsterdam in 2007. I thought Phil looked tired, out of inspiration. And if you take a good look at the dvd, you'll see it too. He just wasn't in it anymore. Ray was!
I'm sure if they would have kept him he would have gotten more comfortable. With the original songs you could alwayse make them your own and with the classics just don't worry about trying to be like the before and do what you know best. I wouldn't have mind if they would have given him another chance at another album and have him and Phil work together.
This line-up, is much more progressive and deep emotion that Era-Collins was in fact the songs from that era sound -with Ray Wilson's voice- much more dark and intense. I understand that fans of Phill Collins Americans are the majority, and this is demonstrated by the good sales that took Calling All Stations in Europe only. However, this was the best album of Genesis from Duke, from a progressive approach.
He's not a bad alternative. I don't think Genesis are who they really are without Phil, but this guy has a good presence. His voice just isn't quite powerful enough.
i completely agree with andorsius..I saw them in 98 in lille with one of my friend...To tell the truth for me genesis was (like almost american people think) only with phil collins an di didn't see no one else who could replace him...but i saw ray in live..i couldn't beleived it i was completely surprised...specailly for mama that in this concert (katowice isn't so nice) but in lille it was a real good show more powerful...
Genesis' biggest mistake was in not committing to a 3 or 5 album deal with Wilson, letting the chips fall where they may.
Banks and Rutherford put some of their strongest song writing in almost two decades into the songs on "Calling All Stations". They suffered not for the material, but for the lack of Mr. Collins as frontman, who by this time had become totally bland and predictable.
I gladly would have paid for several releases on the footsteps of this one. Sad if you don't agree with me.
Agreed. It would have been fascinating to see the results, not that I begrudge the 2007 reunion of Collins, Rutherford and Banks + Stuermer and Thompson.
Genesis broke up when Phil Collins left... Mike and Tony made a mistake continuining. With Ray they just sound like all those other average rock bands.
"Calling All Stations" contained the same proportion of Banks/Rutherford written tracks that the band's last 20 years' worth of records did - well, almost. Phil Collins was merely a very entertaining front man whose drumming became less and less important starting "Invisible Touch".
Tony and Mike wrote some of their strongest songs in almost 20 years and put a great vocalist up front. The critics and the public were idiots for rejecting Wilson over Collins.
I'm sorry - This isn't Genesis. This is more like "Ray Wilson does Genesis" + Special Guest Mike and Tony. Don't get me wrong the guys good, but it's just not Genesis. Maybe if he was in the band with Collins - Like Collins was with Peter we might be used to him a bit more, but nah.
I agree qith you, and more, i think Ray Wilson is much better than Phill Collins. For me, Genesis has return to great songs and good music with him, like i used to enjoy when Peter Gabriel sing and write for Genesis. I'm sad that Ray has quit the Band, for me he would have to stay cause Genesis is a great band, only when Phil Collins is not in it...
Sorry for PC fan's but he can't stand in front of a Peter Gabriel or a Ray Wilson...
In the time Phil Collins was not the lead singer (70 - 75), he was still really important for the band. If you listen to Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway you can hear his amazing drumming and backing vocals. Everybody always forget that Phil had played drums for the band and that he is really good.
"When Peter Gabriel sang and wrote for Genesis..."
Dude, that's excactly the kind of thing Genesis hate. Peter wasn't Genesis, they all write songs together, and always have. They said they always credited "Genesis" instead of individuel mebers on the early songs cos they all felt they had some input.
i don't see why everyone's laying into this guy with their comments. granted, he's no phil collins. but he's got a pretty smooth voice and he holds his own on this song. maybe all the critics can sing better themselves?
I know man. Ray's a great singer, why can't people just leave it at that. It's different, yes, but that doesn't always mean bad. Ray put his own style to the songs.
Ray is a very good singer, I like to his interpreatiation of old Genesis Songs, but his own songs and the Stiltskin songs are so much better. He ist a very nicy guy, met him at concerts.
Genesis were one of the "old band" critics had always put down since the late '80s.
Commerical success of Invisible Touch and We Cant Dance kept Genesis fresh, but Ray's album with em too many, sounded like a band that was old and gone. Thats why it ended- none would give em any coverage.
There are some songs that Ray cant do- Mama isnt brilliant- but this sounds very good.
I saw the 'Calling All Stations' tour in Glasgow and also the Manchester stadium show last year and, frankly, I'd rather hear Ray singing 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' than suffer Phil singing 'In Too Deep'! With Ray they had a chance of being a real rock band again instead of being merely Phil's backing band. It's a tragedy they didn't go on to make a second album with that line-up.
i thought ray was very good for genesis but as always happens people miss phil and slate all other new stuff alot of the songs still sound alot like they did because the others still use the loops instruments they alays used to shut up and give them a break!
You are absolutely right, they can't stand Genesis with a new singer, no matter how good he is. And Ray Wilson was damn good. The first time I heard him sing a Genesis song (one of the old ones, I think) I thought, 'how lucky they are to have found such a suitable singer'.
Here we go, slating Ray who had a hard position to follow up to after Phil..at least Ray has more stage presence..wonder what you'd all say if bono left U2 and the new singer could only sing 'Streets' and With or Without you in fuckin G minor..that be a bastard eh
I think the main problem with Ray is that he was never really comfortable in the band; I think he always felt like a hired hand (which he was, really) rather than a real, equal band member and I think that came out some in his singing, particularly of the pre-CAS material. He's just stiff and nervous and therefore doesn't evoke much emotion, making for a boring performance. But then, he's not Phil, and wasn't involved in the creation of these songs, so it's quite understandable.
It's apperant that Ray just can't pull of the Gabriel & Collins eras stuff that well, and this version of this song is definately a testimony to that. He simply does not have the talent of his vocal predecessors and does not have the passion that had to sing these songs. He sounds like a guy singing past-time songs in the lounge area in some run-down casion in Reno, Nevada.
i disagree. ray did a fine job. no son of mine was the 1st song he sang in the audition for mike and tony and they loved it. if u r saying ray is bad, then u r saying that mike and tony don't know talent and we know that isn't true. they wouldn't have picked a poor singer to replace the legend that is phil and someone who couldn't handle the songs live and ruin their reputations. the album sold bad in the US and they called it a day. sad, a 2nd album with ray would've been very interesting.
Sorry Ray lovers, but I have to agree with Squonk. Ray is pretty darn terrible on the Gabriel & Collins era songs. Sounds like one of those generic singers from the 80s turned lounge singer. Lacks the uniqueness of Gabriel's & Collins's voices and sounded extremely dated, even in 1997.
hm, there's something very gabriel-esque in the way ray wilson misses one or the other note. ;)
but there's truth in what u say.
I just think that wilson deserved more time with the band - find his own way, define his own way of being 'genesis'. but it seems tony and mike haven't been willing to let this happen. too big is the heritage of peter gabriel and phil collins.
quite sad I think, regarding the fact that neither collins nor gabriel are making records with genesis.
I wouldn't say that. He sounds just fine on this song. He only did the Lamb and Lover's Leap(a section of Supper's Ready) from the Gabriel with Genesis. So, you can't really say he did bad on the Gabriel stuff. Ray is an awesome, passionate singer!
Phil looks like a fucking bowling ball...hair (and appearance) not important? Tell that to the multi-BILLION dollar cosmetic (image) industry !! And hair restoring biz.
